Torres Sitting Pretty

A big stack in middle position raised to 2,800 and watched as action folded to Freddy Torres on the button. The PokerStars Pro took his time before putting in the three-bet to 7,900. The blinds cleared out of the way and the middle-position player woke up with a four-bet to 16,700. The stacks were deep and had all the makings of a big pot, that is until Torres slide his cards to the muck. The Colombian native appears to still be the big stack with 148,000.

Brenes Mixing it Up

There may not be a player in this room with more experience than Team PokerStars Pro (Costa Rica) Humberto Brenes, who has been mixing it up here at the end of the night. Brenes is no doubt wise to the fact that many players are hoping to coast to Day 2, and he is using that to his advantage.

In a recent hand, Brenes was in the big blind and called an early-position player's raise to 2,600. Both players then checked the {7-Hearts}{3-Spades}{Q-Spades} flop, and then Brenes checked the {K-Clubs} turn. The EP player bet 2,700, Brenes folded, and the hand was over. Nothing special there, but it does demonstrate Brenes' willingness to see a flop.

The strategy seems to be paying off too, as he is now up to 50,000.

Four More Hands

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

The tournaments staff just announced that the remaining players will play four more hands before calling it a night. We're headed out to the floor to catch the action and find the big stacks.

Day 1a Concludes With Freddy Torres Leading The Way

Season 4 of the Latin American Poker Tour resumed on Thursday with Day 1a of LAPT Colombia, presented by PokerStars.net. The Allegre Casino poker room was absolutely packed as the field was capped at 330. The same is expected tomorrow's Day 1b. After ten levels of play on Day 1a, an unofficial 104 remain and will return on Saturday for Day 2. Leading the way is PokerStars Team Online's Freddy Torres with 207,000.

Torres held an average stack for a little while before winning a key pot that got the ball rolling. With the board reading {K-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Spades}, an opponent with {K-Hearts}{J-Spades} got his chips in the middle against Torres' {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}. The {2-Diamonds} turn and {4-Clubs} river secured the pot for Torres, helping pave the way for his rise to the top of the counts.

It was a rough start to the day for other members of Team PokerStars, as three were felted early on. In less than an hour between Levels 3 and 4, Mexico's Christian de Leon and Angel Guillen, as well as Argentina's Nacho Barbero all were eliminated. Costa Rica's Humberto Brenes, on the other hand, survived and will return for Day 2 with 53,700.

Day 1b kicks off at noon local time tomorrow, so be sure to keep it here at PokerNews for all of the action. Until then, goodnight from Medellin!
