Tong Bags Chip Lead on Day 1a of Texas State Main Event

Level 16 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Jimmy Tong

The first flight of Day 1 of the Inaugural Texas State Main Event 1 Million GTD is in the books after 13 hours of play. It was an eventful day of action that attracted a total of 129 entries and ended with 16 still remaining to advance to Day 2 on Sunday May 2.

Of the 16 surviving players, the biggest stack was Jimmy Tong. Tong gathered a large amount of chips in the middle part of the day when he rivered a wheel to overcome flopped trips. From there he went to the featured table and played a high percentage of hands, tossing chips around, gathering and losing. At one point his chip lead dipped down to near the average but he was able to chip back up again and then take over the lead on the last hand of the night when his full boat sunk Upeshka De Silva to end the night.

Also bagging was James Duke, Bryan Piccioli and none other than Chris Moneymaker who was close to the chip lead late in the night but took a bad beat from Duke when his aces were cracked by queens when a queen hit the flop on the bubble. Moneymaker was able to shake off that beat and survive to the finish line of the day.

The action will repeat itself tomorrow on Day 1b, the second flight of five opening flights, as players return to the felt for another shot at 11 a.m.

PokerNews will pick up the bombastic action from there as the field continues to grow in this first time mega event in the Lone Star State.

De Silva Falls to Full Boat to Burst Bubble

Upeshka De Silva

Action was on the flop with the board reading {10-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{3-Clubs}. Upeshka De Silva bet 22,000 in position. Jimmy Tong raised to 85,000. De Silva called.

The turn was the {k-Diamonds}. Tong checked. De Silva bet 94,000 and Tong moved all in.

"You have a full house?" said De Silva in exasperation. "Well I can't fold this and tossed in the call."

Tong indeed turned over the full house with the {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} while de Silva tossed over the {k-}{q-}.

The river sealed the deal for De Silva as the {6-Diamonds} finished him off as the bubble finisher.

Moneymaker's Aces Cracked on the Bubble

James Duke Collects the Pot
James Duke Collects the Pot

James Duke moved all in preflop over a raise from Jimmy Tong and a three-bet from Chris Moneymaker. Tong folded after a moment and Moneymaker snap called.

Duke's tournament life was on the line on the stone bubble and in big trouble as he held the {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} against the {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} of Moneymaker.

The flop however was bad news for Moneymaker as it came down {q-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. The turn was the {5-Spades} and the river came the {3-Hearts} to keep Duke alive and the bubble going while Moneymaker was knocked short.

Tong Decimates Rice With River Wheel

Action was picked up on the turn with the board reading {2-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{10-Spades} with three players in the hand. Shawn Rice bet 10,000, James Duke folded and Jimmy Tong called.

The river came the {3-Diamonds}. Tong pushed a stack of chips forward for a big bet of about 90,000. Rice waited a few moments and announced all in which Tong called quickly.

Rice turned over a flopped set with the {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} while Tong tabled the rivered wheel with the {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs} much to Rice's dismay as his once large stack was reduced to nearly nothing while Tong shot up the chip leaderboard like a rocket.

Daly Finds Aces at the Right Time

Level 7 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Jason Daly
Jason Daly

The dealer was counting out the all in amounts as there was a big three-way preflop all in in progress.

Jason Daly was in prime position holding the {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} against the {k-Clubs}{k-Spades} of Blake Barousse and the {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} of Jim Echiverri, who had the largest stack by a very small amount while Barousse had the smallest.

The flop came {j-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Hearts} to change nothing. The turn was the {9-Hearts} and the river came the {7-Hearts} to confirm the winning hand for the aces and give Daly a big boost while Barousse was left with zero and Echiverri with crumbs.
