Day 2 of the 2014 Master Classics of Poker Ends in the Money

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Clyde Tjauw Foe

A total of 158 players returned to the tables of the Holland Casino in Amsterdam on Wednesday for Day 2 of the 2014 Master Classics of Poker €4,250 Main Event. Registration was still open until the first card was dealt at 14:00 CET, which allowed six late entries and 11 reentries to take advantage of the option and boost the overall attendance to 298 entries.

This equaled the number of runners of the year prior and even more remarkable is the fact that all Main Event champions of the past three years made it into the money. Ole Schemion was leading the field at the start of the day, and the 2012 winner made it through to Day 3, as did David Boyaciyan (2011), and defending champion Noah Boeken.

Among the early eliminations were such familiar names as Marcel Luske, Bryn Kenney, Steve O'Dwyer, Artur Koren, Davidi Kitai, Sorel Mizzi, and Paul Valkenburg. Jorryt van Hoof had a rough day on the felt and busted in a massive three-way pot with the {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts} against Stuart Rutter's {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} when the Brit spiked the {Q-Hearts} on the river to bust the November Niner and eliminate Fatima Moreira de Melo as well — the latter holding the {J-Clubs}{J-Spades} .

Action continued fast and furious with the field being reduced from 43 to 36 in the span of less than 20 minutes to reach the money. Clyde Tjauw Foe woke up with the {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} in the big blind after the all-in shove of Keith Hawkins with the {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, a call from Michiel Brummelhuis and another all-in shove from Mohamed Almani with the {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}. Brummelhuis folded the {A-Spades}{Q-Spades} and would have made a flush, but the kings held up and Tjauw Foe bagged 658,800 to claim the overnight chip lead.

Michael Telker just missed out on the money as did Aviv Meiri and Joeri van der Sman, both of whom were eliminated while Jason Wheeler had a decision for his tournament life on the bubble. Wheeler, an American, ended up calling for his stack of 180,000 in chips with the {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} and Jussi Nevanlinna, who finished runner-up to Boyaciyan in 2011, had him covered and the better starting hand with the {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}. The board ran out {10-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}, and Wheeler was out. All remaining players were guaranteed at least €5,901 for their efforts and a shot to go further on Day 3. That's when play will continue with levels of 90 minutes and the first blinds at 2,000/4,000 with an ante of 500.

The big stacks for the penultimate day include [Removed:17] (640,700), 2011 champion Boyaciyan (582,600), Jimmy Pan (435,900), Andrew Chen (434,200), Day 1 chip leader and 2012 champion Schemion (425,800), and Amir Mozaffarian (355,700). Play will resume at 14:00 CET and will continue until the final table of the last nine players remain, the PokerNews Live Reporting team will be there to cover all crucial hands.

Jason Wheeler Bubbles the 2014 Master Classics of Poker

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Jason Wheeler
Jason Wheeler

While Aviv Meiri was getting knocked out on one table and Joeri van der Sman took a beat from [Removed:17], there was still one more hand being played when hand-for-hand was announced.

Jason Wheeler was on the button with a 47,800 bet out in front of him while Jussi Nevanlinna, a former MCOP runner-up in the big blind, had a 22,800 bet before him. The Finn announced all in and the action was put back onto Wheeler. The American was just about to call off his stack when he looked at the clock - there were still 39 players left (NB this was before the exits of Meiri and van der Sman). Wheeler began to count his stack and thought for several minutes as the number of players remaining went down from 39 to 37. A crowd gathered around with several short stacks looking on expectantly.

Finally Wheeler said, "Ok I call."

Wheeler: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Nevanlinna: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}

The board came {10-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} to make a full house for the Finnish player. There was a countdown, Wheeler had about 180,000 in total but Nevanlinna had roughly 210,000. The American was out, everyone else was in the money and play immediately finished for the day.

Tjauw Foe busts Hawkins and Almani to take the Lead

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Mohamed Almani
Mohamed Almani

Keith Hawkins moved all in for 36,800 from middle position and Michiel Brummelhuis called from one seat over. The action folded to Mohamed Almani in the small blind and he moved all in for just over 200,000 chips. Clyde Tjauw Foe in the big blind had both players at risk covered and was all in as well to create a massive pot. Brummelhuis folded {A-Spades} {Q-Spades} and the three players turned over their cards:

Hawkins: {A-Clubs} {9-Clubs}
Almani: {J-Clubs} {J-Hearts}
Tjauw Foe: {K-Spades} {K-Hearts}

Brummelhuis would have made a flush as the board ran out {10-Spades} {2-Spades} {5-Hearts} {8-Spades} {6-Diamonds}, eliminating both Hawkins and Almani just shy of the money.

Rutter Busts de Melo and van Hoof in the Same Hand

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Stuart Rutter
Stuart Rutter

Well, Stuart Rutter is not going to be too popular with Dutch poker fans tonight.

Fatima Moreira de Melo opened to 5,000 preflop and it was called by Rutter and Richard Milne Sr, Jorryt van Hoof then three-bet to 17,500 behind him. de Melo tanked for a couple of minutes and then moved all in. Rutter moved in behind her, Milne folded and van Hoof snap-called.

de Melo: {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}
Rutter: {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}
van Hoof: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

van Hoof looked in great shape to win a huge pot but the board came {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and somehow Rutter spiked a queen on the end to win everything. He had both Dutch players covered and moves back up to a quarter of a million in chips.

Cold Day for Mizzi

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Sorel Mizzi
Sorel Mizzi

Ole Schemion limped in middle position before Sorel Mizzi raised to 5,200 in the seat next to him. On the other side of Mizzi, the next player to act made it 10,800 to play. It was folded back to Mizzi who made the call to see a {J-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Spades} flop.

Mizzi checked and his opponent bet 7,600, Mizzi made the call to the see {2-Clubs} on the turn where he led out for 14,900 and his opponent called to see the {9-Diamonds} on the river.

Mizzi moved all in for his last 35,000 and his opponent quickly called. The Canadian showed {Q-Hearts}{10-Spades} for the flopped straight but he got shown {J-Clubs}{J-Spades} - a full house on the river for his assassin.

Sorel MizziPoker can be cruel-but when I ask"will I be affected by this in a month?" the answer is no and I choose to be happy now instead of waiting.

Triple Seat Open

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Paul Valkenburg
Paul Valkenburg

Within the spur of the last five minutes, Paul Valkenburg, Robbie Bakker and Jasper Wetemans hit the rail. Wetemans three-bet shoved for 32,000 after a raise of the player in the cutoff and Niels van Alphen reshoved behind him with {A-} {J-}. Wetemans had pocket nines and the window card was an ace.

Robbie Bakker raised from the button with a stack of 45,000 and Govert Metaal in the big blind was rather short. Andrew Chen was one seat over in the small blind and moved all in with the by far superior stack. Bakker called all in with {A-} {10-} because he didn't give Chen a strong hand due to the all in. The Canadian had {K-} {Q-} and hit a king on the turn.

Last but not least, Paul Valkenburg was involved in a preflop battle with Noah Boeken and was all in for what looked like 60,000 in chips still with pocket tens. Boeken called with {Q-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} and the {3-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {A-Clubs} {5-Spades} board ran out safely for the defending champion. "You don't have to go broke there. I'll take it," Boeken said after the hand.

David Boyaciyan
David Boyaciyan

Chino Rheem checked a flop of {9-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} across to David Boyaciyan and the winner of the MCOP in 2011 bet 6,700. Rheem check-raised to 25,000 and Boyaciyan tanked for a minute before making the call. The turn was the {4-Hearts} and Rheem moved all in, Boyaciyan quickly called off his stack.

Rheem: {7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Boyaciyan: {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

The {Q-Hearts} river changed nothing and Boyaciyan doubled up to over 200,000. Rheem dropped to 60,000.

Rettenmaier: {Q-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Joining the action on the {K-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {3-Spades} flop, Artur Koren called a check-raise of Hzaram Aanquich to 11,400 and then called the bet of 21,300 on the {3-Diamonds} turn. The Dutchman checked the {A-Hearts} river and Koren moved all in for over 30,000 still, Aanquich snap-called with {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}. Koren only had {J-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} for jack-high and was sent to the rail.
