Brummelhuis Leads After Day 1B of the Master Classics of Poker Main Event

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Michiel Brummelhuis
Michiel Brummelhuis

Day 1B of the Master Classics of Poker saw a much larger turnout than Day 1A. A total of 191 entries were made into the €4,300 event, growing the total to 266 and 75 players survived Day 1B.

A small legion of familiar faces and former champions made their way to Holland Casino Amsterdam for the annual event. Among those to bag were Noah Boeken, Stefan Wolzak, Lex Veldhuis, and Steve O'Dwyer.

A Strong Dutch Showing

It was a who's who of Dutch poker in the tournament room, with a battery of international stars joining in on the fun. While players like Chino Rheem, Jan Eric Schwippert, Davidi Kitai, and Bart Spijkers all gave it their best, they didn't make it through the nine levels played on Day 1B. They all still have one last chance to enter though as registration remains open till play gets underway on Day 2.

Dutch poker star Fatima Moreira de Melo was among those falling victim to a lack of rungood. She got it in with a flopped straight with a flush draw to go with it against a player holding a bare higher straight draw. The dealer burned and turned the worst card in the deck for the recent Dutch Poker Hall of Famer; her opponent made a higher straight and the river didn't give her the much-needed diamond to stay alive.

Legendary Dutch player Rob Hollink also departed early on. He got it in with ace-king against Marcel Goldenbelt's jacks. Hollink didn't connect with the board and was forced to reenter.

More Day 1B Survivors

Jasper Meijer van Putten, who won the last EPT in Prague before this year's resurrection of the tour, had a good showing on Day 1B, leading for some part of the day. The biggest contribution to his stack came in the form of flopped trips versus flopped trips, with Meijer van Putten's superior kicker making for the deciding factor. In the end, he bagged 87,900.

David Boyaciyan, an MCOP winner with a nice EPT Prague track record of his own, couldn't miss out on his hometown tournament and made his entrance as well. One of the best performing Dutch poker players has taken a bit easier approach to poker recently but hadn't forgotten his tricks, with no sign of being rusty whatsoever. He bagged 89,000 in chips.

Not just the live pros came out for the biggest poker tournament in Holland, the online delegation also made their appearance. Players like Luuk Gieles, Jans Arends, Rens Feenstra, and Jasper Wetemans all sat down right when the event got underway and made it through the nine levels of play.

November Niner Michiel Brummelhuis ended the day with the heaviest of bags; he turned 30,000 into 193,100. He's had plenty of success in this event. In 2016 and 2015, he finished 13th. In 2014, he finished 18th and in 2013, he finished 26th. After play concluded, he predicted finishing eighth this year.

While there was a hiatus between Day 1A (Friday) and Day 1B (Tuesday), the event now plays out like a regular tournament with Day 2 getting underway Wednesday at 2 p.m. Blinds will be 600/1,200 with a 1,200 big blind ante. Kuhlman Makes a Big Call

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Rene Kuhlman
Rene Kuhlman

We missed the initial action, we only got there on the turn as both Rens Feenstra (small blind) and Rene Kuhlman (under the gun) checked on {Q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} with already some big chips in the pot.

The {4-Diamonds} completed the board and Feenstra bet 6,400. Kuhlman tanked for a bit before flicking in a 5,000-chip to call.

Feenstra tabled {K-Hearts}{J-Clubs} for a missed open-ended. Kuhlman showed {A-Spades}{3-Spades} and took down the pot with nothing but ace-high.

Meijer van Putten Builds a Stack

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Jasper Meijer van Putten
Jasper Meijer van Putten

Meijer van Putten had some towers of chips in front of him, a lot more than the last time we checked in with him. He told us how he won a sizable pot to get him there.

Meijer van Putten opened {J-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} in middle position and got a call from the cutoff and small blind. Meijer van Putten continuation bet two-thirds of the pot on {J-}{7-}{4-} with two clubs and a heart. Both of his opponents called.

The turn was the {J-Hearts}, bringing a second flush draw. The small blind checked and Meijer van Putten bet two-thirds of the pot again. The cutoff folded but the small blind shoved, which was effectively a min raise. With his trips, Meijer van Putten called. The small blind showed {J-Spades}{10-Spades} for an inferior trips, and the river blanked to gift Meijer van Putten the sizable pot.

Goldenbelt Takes Out Hollink

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Marcel Goldenbelt
Marcel Goldenbelt

WSOP bracelet and EPT winner Rob Hollink has been eliminated from the 2018 Master Classics of Poker Main Event. When we arrived, hiss eat was already vacant. We asked Marcel Goldenbelt if he remembered what had happened, and it turned out we were talking to the culprit.

A player in middle position opened for 900 and Hollink three-bet the button to 2,700. Goldenbelt cold four-bet to 7,600 from the small blind and the initial raiser folded. Hollink shoved for about 30,000 and Goldenbelt called.

Rob Hollink: {A-}{K-}
Marcel Goldenbelt: {J-}{J-}

The board brought no help to Hollink and he hit the rail. Goldenbelt, meanwhile, is up to 85,000.

Moreira de Melo Eliminated

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Fatima Moreira de Melo
Fatima Moreira de Melo

We just missed it, but Fatima Moreira de Melo was kind enough to fill us in on the details of her bust out right after she hit the rail.

Farid Chati opened the action with a raise from middle position. He was called by Wim Emo (mid position), a player in late position, the small blind, and Moreira de Melo in the big blind.

The flop came {7-}{9-}{J-} with two diamonds and a heart. The action checked to Emo who bet 1,400. The small blind check-raised to 3,500 and Moreira de Melo shoved for 14,800. Initial raiser Chati and Emo folded, the small blind called.

The small blind showed {Q-}{10-} off suit for an open-ended. Moreira de Melo had the goods with {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for the flopped straight and a flush draw on top.

The {8-Clubs} on the turn, however, did her in. The {6-Clubs} on the river wasn't one of the cards she was looking for and she left the tournament right before the level went up.

Brummelhuis Busted Van Hoof

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Michiel Brummelhuis
Michiel Brummelhuis

Michiel Brummelhuis was playing around with a small tower of 5,000-chips, which prompted us to ask him in between hands how he had gotten a hold of all of those. Brummelhuis told us how he busted fellow former November Niner Jorryt van Hoof in the first level of the day.

Brummelhuis opened {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} for 300 and found a caller in Robert Soogea. Jorryt van Hoof squeezed to 1,800 and both Brummelhuis and Soogea called.

The {J-}{10-}{7-} flop and {9-} turn were checked by all three players. The {8-} on the river made for a rainbow board with a straight readily available to all. Action checked to Van Hoof who bet 6,000. Brummelhuis shoved for about starting stack and Van Hoof called with {A-}{Q-}. Brummelhuis showed the nuts and busted Van Hoof, catapulting himself to the position of chip leader.

When we arrived just now, the player under the gun opened for 600. His neighbor called and so did Michiel Brummelhuis (middle position) and Kees Alblas (big blind). The flop of {J-Clubs}{2-Spades}{2-Clubs} saw Alblas check. The initial raiser continued for 1,100 and under the gun plus one folded, Brummelhuis and Alblas both called.

Alblas checked blind before the {4-Clubs} turn and was followed by checks from the initial raiser and Brummelhuis. All three of them checked the {Q-Hearts} on the river and Alblas showed {Q-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} with a big smile on his face. His two opponents both mucked.

"Why didn't you bluff?" Alblas asked Brummelhuis in Dutch with a big laugh. "What's wrong with you?" Alblas continued with a big grin on his face.

"I thought it was ok like this," Brummelhuis replied with a smile just as big.

"I Can Not Show This"

Level 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Luuk Gieles
Luuk Gieles

As we arrived, a pot was brewing between Luuk Gieles (small blind) and the cutoff. After the hand, Gieles told us what had happened.

The cutoff opened for 500 and Gieles had called, as did André van de Venne in the big blind. The flop of {Q-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and the {K-Hearts} turn were checked through before Gieles bet out 1,200 on the {6-Hearts} river. Van de Venne folded his big blind but the initial raiser raised to 5,200. Gieles got over the top of that, making it 16,200.

The cutoff tanked for a fair bit before he eventually folded, saying "You show, I show."

"I can not show this hand," Gieles replied while mucking his hand face down.

Early Christmas Present for Kuhlman

Level 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Rene Kuhlman
Rene Kuhlman

After a raise (500), a three-bet (1,700), and a shove (7,000), Rene Kuhlman looked down on {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} and called. The blinds and other raisers all folded, and Kuhlman soon found out he was up against {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}.

The board ran out an uneventful {5-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{7-Spades}{9-Hearts} and Kuhlman's neighbor exited the tournament area. Kuhlman now up to around 40,000.
