Ara Melkisetian
Ara Melkisetian

Day 3 of the Merit Poker Western Series Main Event gets underway today at 12 noon local time with 114 players coming back. The early drama of the day will be the money bubble which will hit early on as 89 of the remaining players will make the money.

Leading the way into Day 3 is Ara Melkisetian of Lebanon who has a comfortable stack of over 150 big blinds. He has close to $500,000 in career earnings on the felt and will be looking to use his large stack to make a deep run here today.

His countryman Walid Bou Habib enters the second in chips as he is the only other player north of 2 million, creating a decent amount of separation between the top two and the rest of the big stacks.

In third more than 300,000 in chips behind second is Benjamin Hammann of France with 1,775,000. Makram Bou Habib (1,635,000) and Aleksandr Chernikov (1,605,000) round out the top five counts as they are the only five players who start the day with more than 100 big blinds.

Abakirov Ousted

Kubanychbek Abakirov
Kubanychbek Abakirov

Action was joined on a flop that read {8-Hearts}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds}. From under the gun, Kubanychbek Abakirov bet 55,000. El Khoury Gabriel was on his left in early position and raised it up to 125,000.

Abakirov took his time and considered things before three-bet jamming all in for about 550,000. Gabriel took a few seconds before he called.

Kubanychbek Abakirov: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
El Khoury Gabriel: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

Abakirov got up as things were not looking good for his continuation in the tournament as the turn came the {k-Spades} and the river the {7-Diamonds} to send away the one time chip leader of the tournament.

Gabriel on Fire Early, Slays Margolin

Level 20 : Blinds 10,000/15,000, 15,000 ante
El Khoury Gabriel
El Khoury Gabriel

El Khoury Gabriel was spotted involved in more big action on a flop of {7-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}. Timur Margolin bet 35,000 from the button, Baurzhan Akimov folded the big blind and El Khoury Gabriel called in the hijack.

The turn brought the {10-Clubs}. Gabriel checked it. Margolin jammed all in and Khoury quickly said "Call!".

Margolin was drawing completed dead as his {k-Spades}{q-Clubs} was crushed by the {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} turned boat of Gabriel. Margolin threw his head back as the ordinarily stoic player was stunned and got up to leave as the meaningless river came the {6-Clubs} and El Khoury continued his early red hot start to the day.

Aleksandr Chernikov
Aleksandr Chernikov

There was already 350,000 in the pot on a board of {4-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{10-Spades} when Aleksandr Chernikov bet 150,000 and was called by Ara Melkisetian.

Danut Chisu, in the big blind, then moved all in for 300,000 and Chernikov immediately pushed a tower of chips from his massive stack in the middle to call. Melkisetian angrily flung his cards away.

Danut Chisu: {a-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Aleksandr Chernikov: {a-Clubs}{9-Spades}

Chernikov had made two pair and left Chisu drawing dead. The {2-Spades} on the river also gave Chisu two pair but it wasn't enough to avoid him hitting the rail.

Hammann quickly tossed in a chip to call as Chilaud opened up {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} for the set. Hammann flung his arms in the air in frustration as he was forced to hand over most of his stack.
