Late Night Set Over Set Propels Vitalii Pankov to the Top of the Day 1b Leaderboard at the Merit Poker Carmen Series Main Event

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Vitalii Pankov
Vitalii Pankov

Vitalii Pankov waited until nearly the last moment to make his big jump up the leaderboard on Day 1b of the Merit Poker Carmen Series $3,300 Main Event.

In the last level of the day, Pankov eliminated Georges Hanna in a set-over-set cooler to win a more than 300,000-chip pot. That massive pot allowed Pankov to finish atop the Day 1b chip counts with 585,000.

Right behind him is Ran Koller, who was the beneficiary of his own cooler late in the night. Koller had trip aces with a king-kicker, knocking out Florian Duta who only had a nine-kicker. Koller ended up with 558,500. Other big stacks include Maxime Chilaud (522,000), Eduard Barsegian (398,500), who’s already made two final table runs so far this series, Selahaddin Bedir (386,000), and Alexandru Papazian (332,000).

Further down the leaderboard are Mihai Niste (246,500), Warmup champion Arie Kliper (235,500), and Fahredin Mustafov (213,000). Gabi Livshitz ended the night with only 76,000 (and a lot of pain, as he wrote on his chip bag). Joining Hanna and Duta on the rail were Warmup fourth-place finisher Julien Loire, UFC veteran Terence Etim, and Jason Wheeler.

A total of 218 players joined the field on Day 1b, bringing the number of entries through two starting flights to 450. Just 108 remain, joining the 106 from yesterday’s opening flight into Day 2 on March 31. There are still two more starting flights: Day 1c tomorrow at noon local time, and a turbo Day 1d at 7 p.m. tomorrow night.

Players can also still register through the end of Level 13 on Day 2. And, with unlimited reentries allowed, the Main Event field is surely going to get more massive until registration closes.

Stay tuned as PokerNews follows the action the rest of the way here at the Merit Crystal Cove Hotel and Casino in North Cyprus.

Set Over Set Spells the End For Hanna

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Georges Hanna
Georges Hanna

Heads-up on a flop of {2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{5-Spades}, Georges Hanna bet 23,000 from under the gun, then called for his last 160,000 when big blind Vitalii Pankov put him all in.

Georges Hanna: {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs}
Vitalii Pankov: {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

Hanna had picked a good spot to get his money in, but found out the bad news when Pankov turned over a higher set. Down to one out to avoid being sent to the rail, Hanna watched as the {2-Spades} and {a-Hearts} came on the turn and river to seal his fate.

Hanna sat stunned in his seat for a few moments before getting up to make his exit. "Did I make a mistake," he asked tablemate Boris Kolev on his way out.

Koller Puts a Massive Cooler on Duta

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Ran Koller
Ran Koller

With around 65,000 in the pot on a board of {10-Hearts}{a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}, Ran Koller bet enough from the button to put small blind Florian Duta all in.

Duta, with 65,000 remaining, tanked for a few moments before he called. Koller opened up {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} for trip aces and Duta tossed his {a-Hearts}{9-Clubs} into the muck before making his exit in the last level of the night.

Koller has now eclipsed 500,000 chips and is contending for the tournament chip lead.

Julien Loire
Julien Loire

Mihai Niste had a raise to 7,000 in front of him on the button before Julien Loire, in the big blind, put in his last 80,000. Niste snap-called.

Julien Loire: {2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}
Mihai Niste: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

Loire didn't hit any miracles on the {7-Spades}{q-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} board and was sent to the rail.

Abakirov Calls Down With Deuces as Kaukua Rockets Up the Counts

Level 8 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Toni Kaukua
Toni Kaukua

Toni Kaukua and Kubanychbek Abakirov built a pot of around 60,000 heading to the turn on a board of {4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. Kaukua asked Abakirov to see how much he had behind, but Abakirov, wearing a pair of headphones, didn't reply before Kaukua bet 35,000 in early position.

Abakirov took his time before he called on the button, leading to the {k-Diamonds} river. Kaukua paused for around a minute before he moved all in for 120,500.

Abakirov took even more time, spending several minutes in the tank before he called. Kaukua turned over {10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a flush and Abakirov tried to muck his cards before the table reminded the dealer he was forced to show.

The dealer retrieved Abakirov's {2-Hearts}{2-Spades} from the muck as Kaukua raked in the massive pot.

Boris Kolev
Boris Kolev

With the board showing {5-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{q-Hearts} and already around 60,000 in the pot, a player on the button moved all in as action went on Boris Kolev in the big blind.

"I'm going to call," Kolev said as he put in his remaining 80,000.

"Good call," his opponent said as he went to muck and Kolev turned over {q-Clubs}{9-Spades} for two pair. The button was forced to reveal his {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}.

"I was thinking eight-seven. My sixth sense never lies," Kolev added following the hand as he doubled up.

Farah Sniffs Out a Bluff For Massive Double

Level 7 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Elie Farah
Elie Farah

Elie Farah bet 6,000 from early position on a flop of {8-Hearts}{2-Spades}{6-Hearts} and was called by Evgenii Katymaev on the button.

The turn came the {9-Diamonds} and Farah bet another 11,000. Katymaev this time raised to 34,000, and Farah quickly called to the {9-Spades} river.

Farah checked over to Katymaev, who moved all in. Farah instantly threw in a chip to call for his last 50,000 and slammed down {7-Clubs}{7-Spades} for nines and sevens. Katymaev had {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a bluff and handed over most of his stack to Farah.

Papazian Near Chip Lead After Picking Off Gavrilovich

Level 6 : Blinds 700/1,500, 1,500 ante
Alexandru Papazian
Alexandru Papazian

There was already more than 100,000 in the middle on a board of {5-Hearts}{9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} when Alexandru Papazian bet 30,000 from early position and was called by Jenya Gavrilovich in the cutoff.

The river came the {q-Spades} and Papazian slowed down and checked. Gavrilovich sat still for about a minute as the normally rambunctious table, featuring Naji Tanuri and Ionel Anton, fell silent.

Gavrilovich eventually moved all in for around 60,000 and Papazian nearly beat him into the pot. Gavrilovich showed {k-Spades}{2-Spades} for a bluff and Papazian turned over {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} for a full house to take the pot and move past 400,000.

Tanuri Sends Bozhkov Back to "Kindergarten"

Level 5 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Naji Tanuri
Naji Tanuri

Ionel Anton three-bet to 10,000 as action folded to Leonid Bozhkov in middle position who tanked for around 45 seconds until a player called the clock.

"He's 18. He's allowed to take time," Anton said about the youthful-looking Bozhkov.

"He's 15," Naji Tanuri joked.

Bozhkov eventually moved all in for around 70,000 and Tanuri reshoved from under the gun. Anton folded.

Leonid Bozhkov: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Naji Tanuri: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Both players ended up making a flush on the {k-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} board, but Tanuri's king-high beat Bozhkov's queen to send him to the rail.

"Look out, kindergarten. He's coming back," Anton said as the table shared a laugh. Bozhkov handed back his ID ticket on his way to the exit.

"Give it to child services," Anton continued.

Michalak Doubles This Time

Level 5 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Jakub Michalak
Jakub Michalak

Jakub Michalak reentered after busting to Luc Bindel earlier and just found himself all in again, although with quite a different result.

In a blind versus blind battle, Michalak bet 7,000 on a flop of {q-Spades}{6-Hearts}{j-Clubs} and Dmitry Yurasov called from the small blind.

The turn came the {3-Diamonds} and Michalak bet another 21,100. Yurasov again called to see the {5-Diamonds} river, when Michalak moved all in for 56,500.

Yurasov rechecked his cards and shuffled his chips for about a minute before calling. Michalak turned over {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds} and Yurasov mucked as Michalak doubled up.
