Justin Bateson Leads Final Nine; Moneymaker’s Deep Run Comes to an End

Level 29 : 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante

It was an exciting day from start to finish, that ended with Justin Bateson (4,030,000) nabbing the chip lead in the last level of the night. In fact, the battle for the chip lead was a hotly contested one but after a couple of big hands, including a rivered two pair, Bateson will return slightly ahead of the pack when play resumes tomorrow for the final.

Bateson has been here before, finishing runner up in the Hippodrome London leg of the Moneymaker’s Tour to the PSPC 2020 just a few weeks ago. This time, he will undoubtedly have his sights set firmly on first place, where an £11,200 prize awaits the winner as well as an illustrious Platinum Pass, which Bateson bubbled last month.

He will face stiff competition from Gary Miller (3,960,000), who is one of the most experienced players at the final table. Miller has $381,000 in live cashes and will start just a whisker behind Bateson. Duncan Mackie (3,555,000) comes through in third and Valdir Santos (3,155,000) in fourth (the only other players with over 300,000-chip stacks to play with). [Removed:148] (2,960,000), Rungarun Thongnonsung (2,680,000), Sinead Priestly (2,060,000), Dan Spataru (2,040,000) and Robert Buky (940,000) complete the final nine.

It wasn’t good news for everyone though with the most notable exit of the day, the man who the tournament is named after, Chris Moneymaker busting in 15th place for £940. The deep run was the second time the PokerStars Pro has made it as far as the final two tables, after a 14th place finish at the Hippodrome London leg.

At the start, there were 126 hopefuls still in with a shot and with only seven eliminations needed before the bubble burst. The bust outs continued to fly, with a host of big names among them, including Ben Winsor, Christopher Yong, William Kassouf, Marc Inizan, Min Ji, Artan Dedusha and previous Platinum Pass winner Salvatore Donato all hitting the rail in the money stages of the tournament.

The third and final day will kick off at 12pm here at Aspers Casino Stratford. Levels will increase to 40 minutes long and play will rewind to the start of Level 29 (50,000-100,000 100,000 big blind ante). PokerNews will be back here from 12:30pm (in line with the 30-minute delay on the live stream). See you then.

Chris Moneymaker Eliminated in 15th Place (£940)

Level 28 : 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante

Feature Table: Down to just a few big blinds, Chris Moneymaker began the last hand in trouble (stack-wise) and has failed to spin up after clashing with Gary Miller. The two players were sat in the blinds and Miller set Moneymaker all in, with the PokerStars pro calling for 490,000 total.

Gary Miller: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Chris Moneymaker: {10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

A queen on the {q-Spades}{j-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flop gave Miller top pair but there was a sweat with Moneymaker hitting a straight draw. Miller improved to two pair on the {a-Hearts} turn and the {3-Hearts} river was a brick. It sees the end to Moneymaker's deep run and Miller pulls ahead of the pack with effectively 3 million in chips.

Moneymaker’s Road to PSPC Continues with Day 2 Kicking Off at 2pm

It has been an epic week, with eight starting flights taking place here at Aspers Casino Westfield Stratford City and Aspers Casino Milton Keynes over the past five days. In total 753 entries have created a prize pool of £90,360. Added to that is a Platinum Pass (worth around $30,000) to the PSPC 2020, which takes place in Barcelona next year, so there is an awful lot at stake for the 126 players who survived to day 2.

Edgar Drozdov (620,000) is the one to catch, starting as overall chip leader after dominating the Day 1b flight on Tuesday. Georgian Georgescu (507,000), Victor Nitel (490,000), Nikolay Ponomarev (476,000), PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker (470,000), William Miskelly (470,000), Timotheos Timotheou (447,000), Vitali Pasci (446,500), Shari Filton (419,000) and Yosef Lubovich (382,500) make up the top ten chip stacks starting the day today.

There are still some big names in contention who will certainly be worth keeping an eye on. Gary Miller (353,000), Christopher Yong (291,000) Artan Dedusha (286,000), former Platinum Pass winner Salvatore Donato (250,000), William Kassouf (198,000), Guy Taylor (170,500), Jen-Yue Chiang (162,000), Ben Winsor (127,000) and Marc Inizan (63,000) are all still in the running.

Levels will remain 30 minutes long and the tournament will play down to either the final table or the end of 15 levels, whichever comes first. As if there hasn’t been enough excitement already, today will be the first day of live streaming coverage, with the feature table set up and ready to go.

On top of that, there will be live updates here at PokerNews to look forward, with coverage starting from the moment cards are in the air, right up to the end of play.

*Each Platinum Pass (worth approx. $30,000) includes:

Buy-in to the €22,500 PSPC 2020 event
Six nights’ hotel accommodation for two people in a 5* Barcelona Hotel
Airport transfers
Bespoke PSPC Merchandise
€1,250 to cover expenses
Platinum Pass winner experiences during the event
