Julku Saved by River Counterfeit

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

Juliaana Julku has doubled up in dramatic fashion with a crucial river card against Marc Foggin. Foggin had opened preflop, called by button Julku and small blind Brett Angell. On the {q-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop, Angell checked, Foggin bet 3,000 and Julku alone made the call.

The turn: {j-Spades}. Foggin led out for 5,500 and Julku moved all-in for 17,000 total, receiving a swift call.

Foggin: {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} for a flopped two pair.
Julku: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

The river paired the board with the {3-Hearts} and Julku's tournament life was saved with that counterfeit of her opponent's two pair.

"I knew I was behind on the turn, but I had to," ruminated Julku as the dealer briefly attempted to award the pot to the losing Foggin.

Foggin First Out with No Revolving Door

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

With registration now closed, Marc Foggin's elimination is now permanent (for Day 1a - there are still three starting flights coming up this week). His last 16,200 went all-in on a three-way flop of {j-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}. Small blind Savvas Mitskouridis had led out for 5,000, and big blind Juliaana Julku called, before Foggin took the plunge. Mitskouridis simply put forward a big stack of 5,000 value chips in response to Foggin's shove, which got a fold from Julku.

Foggin: {k-Spades}{10-Clubs} for the up-and-down straight draw.
Mitskouridis: {q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for a flopped two pair.

Foggin missed his draw over the {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} turn and river, and he exits Day 1a. Meanwhile Mitskouridis looks to have topped the 200,000 mark and has jumped into the chip lead.

"Flop Top Set, You Don't Need Glasses!"

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Mehmet Hasan has eliminated Shaun Rogerson, flopping a monster set-over-set with (from the table talk post-hand) a slow-played preflop pair of queens. We caught the hand from the turn with the board standing {q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{4-Hearts}. Rogerson, the under the gun preflop raiser, checked and Hasan bet 16,000. Rogerson thought for a while, before sliding his full 45,000 across the line. He was snap-called and showed down {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} to Hasan's {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}! The river was the {5-Diamonds} and Rogerson hit the rail.

"Once you bet sixteen, I thought you were strong," admitted Rogerson.

Watson Spikes His Kicker

Level 10 : 800/1,500, 1,500 ante

Andrew Dodson opened preflop in late position and Kyle Watson on the button moved all in for 14,000. When it folded back to Dodson, he called swiftly, tabling a dominating {a-Spades}{k-Clubs} to Watson's {a-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}. The board ran out {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{9-Spades}{j-Clubs} with the crucial nine keeping Watson in the tournament.

"On the button with ten bigs," Watson said, "Nowt else I can do, really..."

Robinson Avoids Multiple Overcard Threat to Near-Triple Up

Level 10 : 800/1,500, 1,500 ante

A short-stacked (<10,000) Kyle Watson moved all-in preflop, followed by Mark Robinson for 20,400. Jonathan Prested re-shoved for over 55,000 and the rest of the table got out of the way.

Watson: {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Robinson: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}
Prested: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

The board brought Watson his pair of jacks on the flop, but by the river Robinson had made a jack-high straight: {10-Spades}{j-Spades}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{8-Hearts}. "The best hand won," said a tablemate. All change for Robinson who is now enjoying a newly replenished stack of 52,000.
