Listed: the only stacks close to Surtees' at the moment. Matthew Gray, who has not run well late in the day in his previous attempts at this Main Event, has again started off strongly. His most recent pot was won with a big shove - 30,600 - into two opponents on a flop of {2-Spades}{4-Spades}{10-Spades}. The pot had swollen preflop to around 22,000 and although John Pogue gave it a ponder, he let his hand go, as did the third player.

Day 1c Already Equals Largest Flight So Far, Five Levels of Late Registration Left

Level 3 : 200/300, 300 ante

As expected, Friday night has seen an increase in buzz in the card room at Aspers Casino, Newcastle. Day 1c has already reached 81 entries, the end-of-day number yesterday, and there are nearly three hours of late registration still to go.

Next to the tournament area, a cash game has sprung, fully formed, into existence featuring none other than Chris Moneymaker, taking it easy after making Day 2 yesterday.

Hetherington's Downward Trend Reversed

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante

Andrew Hetherington found a perfect flop for a double through, having dropped from his initial starting stack of 30,000 to just 8,500 over the course of the first 90 minutes of play. Hands were on their backs when we arrived, the flop standing: {8-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}.

Hetherington: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Martin Robinson: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

The turn and river brought {9-Hearts}{6-Spades}; double back into contention for Hetherington.

Harris Shows the Bluff

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante

Stephen Harris opened preflop to 1,200 in early position, called by button Hazel Birchnall alone. Both players checked the {k-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop. On the {3-Spades} turn, Harris checked, Birchnall bet 1,700, and Harris threw in 3,000 (soon adding 400 to make the raise legitimate). After a brief think, Birchnall called.

The river: {q-Clubs}. Harris tossed a single 5,000 chip up and into the pot. Birchnall folded slowly and was shown the {7-Diamonds}{8-Spades} for pure air.

Giacomini Folds a Royal Flush

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante

The hand that saw the back of Andrew Hetherington would have seen either of his potential opponents send him to the rail. It started with a preflop open to 2,000 in early position from table chip leader Carlo Giacomini, called by Anthony Long in position. Over to small blind Hetherington, who moved all in for 11,500. Giacomini made the call, but then reconsidered staying in the hand when he found Long moving in over the top for 28,700 total.

Long: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Hetherington: {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

The flop brought a king for the all-in player: {10-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}. The turn and river brought a running broadway, however, for Long: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}. This provoked a dramatic reaction from Giacomini, prompting Long to ask, "Did you fold the queen of hearts?"

"Yes. Swear to god!" said Giacomini. "Never had one...ever," he mused, as the pot went to Long.
