Ponakovs Comes Out Best in a Battle of the Blinds

With around 120,000 in the pot on the 10♣A♣3♠4♦ board, Mikita Badziakouski went for a check from the small blind and faced a bet of 90,000 from Aleksejs Ponakovs, who was in the big blind. Badziakouski called to see the final card.

A board-pairing 10♥ on the river checked through, and Badziakouski showed 5♥4♥ for a pair of fours. Ponakovs turned over the winner with A♠Q♠ for top pair, and the pot was sent his way, increasing his stack to over half a million.

In the final hand of the previous level, Paulius Vaitekunas raised to 5,500 from under the gun, with Thomas Alfred Mayer calling from the cutoff. Artur Martirosian squeezed to 26,000 from the big blind, which only Vaitekunas called.

Martirosian put out a continuation-bet of 14,000 on the 5♣7♠A♥ flop, and Vaitekunas called.

The 5♦ came on the turn, and Martirosian checked. Vaitekunas bet 22,000, and Martirosian stuck around with a call.

With a little over 70,000 in his stack, Martirosian checked the 3♣ river and was then faced with another decision for all of it, as Vaitekunas put him all in.

Vaitekunas had put Martirosian in the blender not too long ago and decided he wanted a smoother Martirosian milkshake, as he had put him right back in it.

After burning through more time banks, Martirosian went for a call.

Vaitekunas showed A♠Q♠ for a pair of aces to win the pot and bust Martirosian as the first elimination of the tournament, as Martirosian revealed K♠K♣ for a pair of kings.
