Hao Su Tops 26 Day 1a Survivors In HK$100K OPC 2018 High Roller

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Hao Su leads the pack
Hao Su leads the pack

It was a slightly shorter day than expected on Day 1a of the Oriental Poker Championship (OPC) HK$100K High Roller, but it didn’t prevent seeing plenty of action in the Venetian Macau Resort & Hotel poker room.

A total of 31 entries throughout today’s seven 40-minute levels (nine levels were scheduled, but the decision was made to shave off two late in the day). The player leading the way after an abrupt end to the day is China's Hao Su, who surged up the chip counts just before the dinner break. When players returned Su continued to increase his stack thanks to some manic last-minute action, ultimately bagging up 157,200 to top the 26 Day 1A survivors.

Su is most closely followed by Chung Yuan Yu (115,000), Dmitry Rabotkin (113,000), and Ivan Leow (107,500). Tony Yat Wai Cheng was the only player to re-enter today, while everyone who busted can still re-enter with registration open until the start of Level 13 tomorrow. That message mainly goes out to Fabian Spielmann, who exited around the midway point and didn’t return, and Yue Feng Pan, Devan Tang, and Yia Qing Ji - the other players to bust and not fire a second bullet.

James Chen
We'll be seeing James Chen tomorrow

There are plenty of familiar faces who will definitely return to action tomorrow at 2pm though. The likes of High Roller James Chen (70,800), Matthew Moss (44,300), Albert Paik (78,800), and Thailand’s all-time money winner Phanlert Sukonthachartnant (48,300) all made it through.

Chen and Paik Clash

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
James Chen
James Chen

Albert Paik and James Chen have played together plenty. The last time the two clashed in a high roller tournament was just two months ago. The pair played a huge pot that saw Paik's pocket aces cracked by the pocket kings of Chen; a hand that saw Paik eliminated and Chen shoot to the top of the chip counts, where he would go on to triumph for a $512,411 payday.

So it's fair to say the two have a little bit of history... We caught the pair picking up right where they left off the last time, with Paik raising to 1,500 from the cutoff and Chen re-raising from the button to the tune of 4,500. Small blind Ivan Leow looked briefly interested but decided against it and big blind Hongjun Zhao also folded and the action was back on Paik, who made the call.

The flop came down {q-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and both players checked, with the dealer burning and turning the {6-Diamonds}. Paik took a stab for 4,500, and after thinking it over Chen slid out the call to keep the action heads-up to the {10-Diamonds} river.

Paik thought long and hard before deciding the right amount to bet was 7,000 and Chen did not take long to make the call. Paik turned over {j-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for a missed gutterball, meaning Chen's {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} was good for a decent sized pot.

Wang Takes the Lead

Level 5 : 250/500, 50 ante
Yang Wang
Yang Wang

We have a new chip leader. Yang Wang is now up to 119,000.

Action folded to Fabian Spielmann on the button and he opened to 1,200. Wang was his only called from the small blind, and the two saw a {5-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop hit the felt. Both checked.

The turn was the {a-Hearts} and now Wang check-called a delayed 2,000 c-bet, bringing the {6-Spades} river. Wang now seized the betting lead, leading into the aggressor for 5,500. Spielmann quickly called, and when Wang turned over his {5-Clubs}{6-Hearts} for a rivered two pair Spielmann mucked with frustration.

He's down to 39,500 after that one.

While this is the first poker series held under the OPC banner, this is not the first time the Poker King Club and Venetian have hosted a successful tournament series. This time last year it was Taiwan's Chung Yuan Yu who hoisted the trophy in the HKD $80,000 Poker King Cup High Roller, defeating the 37-strong field to take down his first title and the HKD $1.02M ($131,000) first prize.

The format offers unlimited re-entry until registration closes at start of level 13, at approximately 3.30pm on Thursday, May 24, meaning the sky really is the limit for those with deep enough pockets.
