Controversial Hand Ends Chouity's Tournament

Nicolas Chouity
Nicolas Chouity

We told you before that we would pay close to attention to the table with Van Marcus, Roy Yaacoub, and Nicolas Chouity. Well, right before the dinner break a controversial hand has resulted in the elimination of Chouity, our Day 1 chip leader.

The board read {Q-Spades}{9-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and Chouity had bet about 30,000 into a healthy pot. His opponent in the hand, Hakan Kuscu, announced all in, but did not move his chips forward. Chouity, with his headphones on, did not realize the action was back on him as he did not hear Kuscu say anything. Without any motions from Kuscu, Chouity thought he was still tanking.

Meanwhile, a player at the table called the clock. The floorman came over and counted down to zero, resulting in the dealer pushing the pot toward Kuscu and declaring Chouity's hand dead. Chouity jumped out of his chair, clearly having thought the floor was counting down the clock on Kuscu.

The tournament director was called over and after being explained the situation by the floorman and the dealer, it was ruled that the hand was still live and action was on Chouity. Players at the table, mainly Karina Jett and also Van Marcus, vehemently disagreed with the ruling, citing that it's a player's responsibility to know when it's their turn. If having headphones on results with the missing of action, it's the player's own fault.

Regardless, the ruling withheld and Chouity's hand was live. Action was back on him and he decided to call all in for about 35,000 total. Kuscu tabled {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} for quads and Chouity's tournament was over. Had his hand not be ruled live after once being ruled dead, Chouity would still be alive in the tournament.
