Joseph Wertz Tops Day 1a of European Open Special Edition as 44 Players Remain

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Joseph Wertz
Joseph Wertz

Day 1a of the European Open Special Edition has come to a conclusion with just 44 players remaining as Joseph Wertz tops the leaderboard after nearly 16 complete levels of poker action.

The day began with 259 players taking to the felt to see a slightly larger-then-expected turnout for the opening flight of the European Open Special Edition. Players ranging from the local recreational player, to the tournament veteran, to multiple WSOP bracelet winners made their way to the Wynn Las Vegas, along with a bevy of Unibet Poker online qualifiers from all across Europe.

With players allowed one re-entry per flight, the action was fast and furious as players jostled for position on the leaderboard that would ensure players a near in-the-money finish once play wrapped up for the night. As chips flew early, it would be an early day for the likes of Unibet Ambassadors David Lappin, Ian Simpson, Rauno Tahvonen, Dehlia De Jong, Espen Jorstad, Mateusz Moolhuizen, Dara O'Kearney, and Daiva Byrne. However, some Americans wouldn't fare much better as Matt Affleck, Allen Cunningham, Scott Clements, Barry Shulman, Eric Baldwin, Phil Laak, Jon Turner, Ryan Riess, Ankush Mandavia, Jeff Madsen, and Jordan Cristos were just a handful of the players unable to survive into Day 2.

Once the dust settled and players chips were bagged and being carted away by the tournament staff, it would be Joseph Wertz topping the leaderboard with 305,500 in chips. Wertz ascended to the top late in the day with some aggressive play, however, he wouldn't be the only player blessed with an abundance in betting discs come Sunday. Matthew Levine held the chip lead for the majority of play after dinner when he turned a straight in a massive pot and eventually finished with 246,000. Rex Clinkscales had a few hiccups here and there before eventually ending with 249,500 in chips. Casey Stewart (280,000), Karel were the only other players in the 200,000-chip mark while Joe Serock (162,000), Darren Rabinowitz (124,500), Ting Ho (64,000), and Kirk Morrison (58,500) were some of the other notables surviving into Day 2 on Sunday.

Saturday will see the final day 1 flight, and the tournament staff are expecting an even bigger turnout of somewhere in the 300 to 400 player range. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be back on the floor of the Wynn Las Vegas once Day 1b play starts at 12:00 p.m. (PST), so make sure to stay tuned to PokerNews.com for all the action from the European Open Special Edition.

The action folded round to Joseph Wertz in the small blind, and he pushed out a stack of chips amounting close to 80,000. Denaa David was in the big blind with 48,800 and went deep into the tank.

David began talking to Wertz before she eventually folded her {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} face-up.

Wertz then showed his {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}.

"You don't know something about me, but I'm legit psychic!" David stated to her table.

"I really thought I was going to lose that hand, so I folded." David added.

Terry Fleischer limped in and Jeff Madsen raised to 2,100. A third player called, and Fleischer made it 7,100 to go once the action came back to him as both Madsen and the unknown player called.

The flop landed {6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} and Fleischer led out for 3,500 with Madsen making the call before the unknown player raised to 13,000. Madsen: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}

Jeff Sluzinski Doubles Through Jonathan Dimmig

Level 7 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jeff Sluzinski
Jeff Sluzinski

Speaking to local tournament grinder and everyone's favorite YouTube personality Jeff "JeffBoski" Sluzinski, he detailed to us a huge double he just received at the hands of Jonathan Dimmig.

Dimmig opened in early position to 1,000 and Sluzinski three-bet the big blind to 4,000 holding {K-}{K-}. Dimmig called, and the flop fell {A-}{K-}{5-} rainbow with Sluzinski continuing for 2,700.

Dimmig called, and when the turn landed the {2-}, Sluzinski bet out 6,800 with Dimmig making the call as the repeating {5-} completed the board on the river.

Sluzinski moved all in for 14,500, and Dimmig called, and then mucked at the sight of Sluzinski's kings-full.

As Sluzinski moved to over 55,000 in chips, Dimmig would be left with just 500 in chips, and consequently eliminated soon after.

Ian Simpson Picks Off Kevin MacPhee's Bluff

Level 3 : 75/150, 0 ante
Ian Simpson
Ian Simpson

The action folded round to Kevin MacPhee in the small blind and he limped in before Ian Simpson bumped it up to 450 from the big blind.

MacPhee called, and the flop landed {8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} and he checked to Simpson who bet out 400. MacPhee called, and then checked the {2-Hearts} on the turn as Simpson bet out 900.

MacPhee again called, and when the river landed the {K-Hearts}, he led out with a bet of 3,000. Simpson deliberated for close to three minutes before eventually making the call.

MacPhee tabled his {6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for a missed flush and straight draw, but it would be Simpson's {J-Spades}{10-Spades} for a flopped top pair that would ensure he was pushed the pot.

The flop landed {8-Clubs}{7-Spades}{5-Clubs} and Garner checked to the initial raiser who bet 2,050. The hijack folded, but Garner called, before both players checked the {2-Clubs} and {4-Clubs} on the turn and river.

Garner tabled his {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}, but it would be his opponent's {J-Hearts}{J-Spades} that would see him scoop the pot.
