Belland, Jaeschke, Thurlow Lead Day 1b of 2019 Canterbury Park Fall Poker Classic $1,100 Main Event

Cody Jaeschke

The field has been set for Day 2 of the 2019 Canterbury Park Fall Poker Classic $1,100 Main Event.

Day 1b saw 219 entries add to the first flight’s 157 runners, bringing the two-day total up to 376 as 14 levels were played to conclusion. When Level 14 ended, 35 players remained with Steven Belland leading the way and bagging a stack of 243,000.

Belland had around half that figure going into the final level of the night before winning a few pots that sent him up the counts. Meanwhile, Cody Jaeschke (226,500) appeared to be a lock for the chip lead before losing a huge pot in the last couple minutes of the night to fall back into second in chips for the flight.

Justin Thurlow (217,500), Kou Vang (211,500), and Jason Seitz (190,500) round out the top five, with all three also experiencing significant gains to their stacks during the final hour of play for the evening. Other players to advance included Yao Yin (173,000), Blake Bohn (118,500), Tyler Kolness (111,000), and past champions Brad Berman (88,500) and Scotter Clark (61,000).

Among those who were not as fortunate in their trials included another trio of former champions in Mike Schneider (2012), Dennis Stevermer (2017), and Nghia Le (2018). Le, better known around the Minnesota poker community as ”3 Putts” will still have a shot at defending his title due to taking a shot at Day 1b after bagging the smallest stack of 39,000 on Day 1a.

The 35 to advance to Day 2 will add their names to the roster of 27 that punched their tickets from the initial flight, meaning that a field of 62 will combine under one roof for the first time to compete for the championship.

Day 2 will begin at 12:30 p.m. local time at the beginning of Level 15 (2,000/4,000/4,000). Levels will remain at 40 minutes in length and the tournament is scheduled to play down to a winner. However, just 45 are set to make it into the money, meaning there is plenty of work to be done for all who return.

PokerNews will be onsite covering the tournament to its conclusion. Come back and find out who will claim the title.

Thurlow Picks off Le for Heaps

Level 13 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Justin Thurlow
Justin Thurlow

Justin Thurlow and Tam Le had gotten stacks in with over 50,000 in the middle prior to the rest of the stacks being committed. The board read {5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{10-Hearts} with Thurlow's winning hand of {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} still tabled. The dealer was in the process of counting stacks and totaled Le's to be around 68,000 with Thurlow's totaling more than that, leaving Le dry on chips as the two exchanged a fist bump before Le got up and left.

Thurlow was kind enough to recount the action after the hand, stating that Le had opened to 6,000 from under the gun and Thurlow called on his direct left. The two went heads up to the flop, where Thurlow called Le's continuation-bet. Le shipped the rest in on the turn and Thurlow called.

Le had {q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and Thurlow was able to hit a safe river to score the knockout and vault his stack to over 213,500. He talked about it after the fact, saying that he had barely over starting stack when the level began.

"But it's make-or-break, though," said Thurlow. "I've busted so many tournaments in Level 13 too!"

It is looking like he will survive this one with less than 10 minutes remaining in the penultimate level of the day.

Paul Hickerson

There have been a few large stacks spotted throughout the six remaining tables, including Mario Hudson, Cody Jaeschke, and Paul Hickerson. Hickerson has the largest stack of the three and made sure to mention that he was visiting from Kotzebue, Alaska. He has made no waste of his time in The North Star State thus far, currently boasting a stack just shy of 200,000 with less than 90 minutes of play left in the day.

Luhm Wins Biggest Pot of the Night So Far

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Stuart Luhm
Stuart Luhm

There was around 20,500 in the middle on a board reading {5-Spades}{3-Spades}{9-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} with action heads up between Stuart Luhm in the big blind and Shelly Morrill, who was on the button. Luhm checked to Morrill, who put out a bet of 12,000. Luhm went into the tank for over a half-minute.

"All in," he said softly. Morrill took about three seconds before announcing a call.

Stuart Luhm: {a-Spades}{9-Spades}
Shelly Morrill: {a-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}

Luhm had top two pair with the nut flush draw and was poised to deliver a chilling cooler to Morrill for a pot that would end up being greater than 200,000 as long as he could fade the last two fives in the deck. The river fell {7-Diamonds} to earn him the double and he pushed his stack forward to be counted. It was totaled to be 93,300 and Morrill paid it off, taking her under a six-figure stack despite being solidly above average. On the other hand, Luhm has likely taken over the chip lead with a monstrous stack of 210,200.

"Captain Jack Doesn't Stab"

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Scotter Clark
Scotter Clark

There was around 7,000 in the middle on a flop of {10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Clubs} with action heads up between Tam Le, who was under the gun, and Scotter Clark who was in middle position. Le had a bet of 7,000 out in front of him and Clark was in the process of calling. The call brought the turn {q-Diamonds} and both players checked. The river then fell {9-Diamonds} and both players checked once more to take the hand to showdown.

Le tabled {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} for a queen-high straight and Clark mucked his hand. There was talk about hope that Clark was going to take a stab at the pot on one of the later streets to steal it away from Le.

Dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow to inject some fun into the room, Clark spouted back: "Captain Jack doesn't stab!"

Alexander Climbing Via Straight Flush

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Matt Alexander
Matt Alexander

There was around 24,000 in the middle on a board of {4-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} and action was on the big blind, who had checked and was facing a bet of 15,000 from Matt Alexander out of the cutoff. He thought for close to a minute and then tossed in chips to call.

"I have the nuts," said Alexander, tabling {5-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for a straight flush. His opponent mucked.

"That's it?" the player joked as Alexander stacked his newly-earned chips into heaping towers of varying heights, with each stack representing a different denomination of chips totaling somewhere in the range of 118,500.

Matakis Finds a Double

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Ian Matakis
Ian Matakis

Ian Matakis had gotten stacks in from early position with action from Tam Le, who was in the cutoff, and hands had just been tabled on a board of {k-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{6-Spades} with about 13,000 in the middle before stacks went in.

Ian Matakis: {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Tam Le: {k-}{9-}

"Nice catch," said Le as he paid what he owed. Despite the lost pot, Le appears to be one of the biggest stacks in the room, having been spotted with over 100,000 in front of him.

Berman Cracks Matakis' Kings

Level 6 : 300/500, 500 ante
Brad Berman
Brad Berman

Ian Matakis was under the gun and raised to 1,200. He was called by the cutoff as well as Scotter Clark, who was on the button. Brad Berman then three-bet all in for 15,500 from the small blind. When action was back on Matakis, he announced he was all in and both the cutoff and Clark got out the way.

Brad Berman: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Ian Matakis: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}

Upon seeing Matakis' hand, Berman remarked that he did not like his chances as he tabled his own. He liked his chances much better as the flop came {4-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}, giving him nine newly-found outs. One of those nine came on the turn {5-Diamonds} to score him the flush and the double as the river fell {9-Clubs} to finish the runout.

Matakis confirmed the amount and sent the chips to the dealer to pay off Berman, bringing him back to under starting stack after appearing to have chipped up a bit in the recent past.

"3 Putts" Makes Five Clubs

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Nghia Le
Nghia Le

A player made it 1,000 to go from uner the gun and defending champion Nghia Le, known locally as "3 Putts" went all in over the top for 7,500 from middle position. Action folded around to the small blind, who asked for a count before announcing a call.

Action was then on Eric Eelkema, who was in the big blind and announced he was all in as well. The original opener folded and the small blind verbalized a call for a three-way all-in preflop situation.

Nghia Le: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Eric Eelkema: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}
Small Blind: {k-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

The small blind covered both players but was also the furthest behind in the hand. Meanwhile, "3 Putts" found his suited big slick also firmly behind Eelkema's pair of aces. The flop came {9-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{5-Clubs}, giving "3 Putts" nine clubs plus the case king in the deck as outs for the triple. The turn {7-Spades} was clean, leaving Eelkema out in front but the river {5-Clubs} that fell behind it gave "3 Putts" the nuts, earning him the triple along the way while Eelkema's aces were second-best and still good for the side pot.

Bohn Coolered for Stacks

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

Andrew Johnson was under the gun and opened the action with a raise to 1,000. He received a call from the player on his left in early position before action folded around to Blake Bohn, who three-bet to 3,200 from the cutoff. Action made its way back to Johnson and he four-bet to 10,000. The early-position player folded to put action back on Bohn, who announced he was all in. Johnson quickly called, tabling his hand immediately afterwards. Bohn saw the news and reluctantly turned his over for the runout as well.

Blake Bohn: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Andrew Johnson: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}

Bohn was unable to improve as the runout came {7-Spades}{6-Hearts}{6-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, leaving his kings up to be second best via an unavoidable cooler that sent him back to the cashier to fire another bullet. He has since taken another seat and has been given more chips with which to play, having wasted no time in doing so.
