Maahs Wins a Big One

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Kevin Maahs
Kevin Maahs

Kevin Maahs opened from middle position to 18,000 and was called by the players in the cutoff and big blind.

The flop of {7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{3-Spades} was checked by all three players.

The turn brought the {q-Clubs} and was checked by the big blind. Maahs then bet 27,000 and was called by the cutoff; the big blind folded.

After the dealer brought the river {4-Diamonds}, Maahs bet 83,000 which was called by the cutoff.

Maahs tabled {a-Hearts}{5-Clubs} for a rivered straight and his opponent mucked.

With that hand, Maahs catapulted himself into one of the Day 1b chip leadersr with 23 players remaining. We are playing down to 19 tonight.

Ogwo Finds a River to Double Through England

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Praise Ogwo
Praise Ogwo

Kyna England raised to 16,000 from the hijack and the action folded around to Praise Ogwo in the small blind, who raised all-in for 103,000. The action came back to England who made the call and was pleased to see that her {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs} was up against {k-Spades}{j-Clubs}.

Things looked promising for England on the flop of {2-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, but as the board ran out {8-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} the best hand belonged to Ogwo. While Ogwo stacked his 221,000 chips, England was left with 22,000, less than four big blinds. She went all-in the next hand, but wasn't able to recover and was eliminated from the tournament.

Spahiu Scores Double Knockout

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Renato Spahiu
Renato Spahiu

WSOP bracelet winner Ben Keeline moved all in for 57,000 under the gun and Renato Spahiu jammed over the top next to act. The player in the hijack then called off for 78,000 total and the rest of the field cleared out.

Ben Keeline: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}
Renato Spahiu: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Hijack: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

Spahiu had the granddaddy of all hands and he essentially locked it up when the {9-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop gave him a full house. The {7-Diamonds} turn left both his opponents drawing dead and he scored the double elimination after the meaningless {8-Spades} was run out on the river.

Hands with Howard: A One Outer on the River

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Howard Hankin
Howard Hankin

After a player raised to 5,000 from early position, Howard Hankin three-bet all in for 26,000 next to act. Sarah Stefan then jammed over the top for 28,700 and action folded around to the original raiser, who opted to call to put both players at risk.

Howard Hankin: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}
Sarah Stefan: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Opponent: {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}

Stefan was best but the river did her dirty as the board ran out {3-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} to give an excited Hankin a winning set on the river.

"Feel grateful Howard," someone at the table said. "That was a one outer."

"You had a nine?" Hankin asked.

"I did," came the reply. Stefan won a small side pot for 5,400, which she doubled in the next hand.

Unfortunately for her, she busted in the penultimate hand of the level. The silver lining is the re-entry option is available through the break, though whether or not she exercises it remains to be seen.

Jared Wagner: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

Yousef Saleh

Amit "Kook" Kuckreja raised to 3,000 from early position only to have the player on the button three-bet to 8,500. Yousef Saleh then four-bet jammed for 34,100 from the small blind and Kook called. The button got out of the way and the hands were turned up.

Yousef Saleh: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Amit "Kook" Kuckreja: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}

Saleh had the best of it and improved to a full house on the {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} flop. The {4-Clubs} turn left Kook drawing dead and Saleh was pushed the pot after the {9-Diamonds} was run out on the river.

Q&A with Midway Poker Tour Founder Dan Bekavac

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Dan Bekavac
Dan Bekavac

The Midway Poker Tour was conceived by Dan Bekavac, a Midwest poker player with more than $290K in lifetime tournament earnings. That includes two MSPT titles, one of which was the 2019 MSPT Potawatomi Main Event for a career-high $126,998.

PokerNews had the chance to catch up with Bekavac leading up to this introductory event.

PokerNews: When and how did the Midway Poker Tour come to be?

Bekavac: We’ve been developing an app that is basically Facebook for poker players since 2017, so the idea of the live tour has been being kicked around since then. We are getting closer to launching the app so now is the perfect time to get our live tour off the ground.

What sort of COVID-19 precautions will be taken during the event?

To help keep everyone safe, we are hosting the event in four separate banquet halls and we are limiting each room to five tables of nine players. All players will be required to wear a mask and hand sanitizing stations will be in each gaming room.

What sort of things have you had to do to prepare for this event?

We’ve had custom tables and chips made for the charity, as well as a custom RFID table, as we will be the first and only mid-major poker tour to stream their event live from the beginning to the end of the event. We’ve had to navigate through the Illinois charity gaming regulations to make sure we are 100% in compliance. As well as reach out to many marketing teams and companies to start getting the word out on our new tour.

What do you envision for the future of the Midway Poker Tour?

We created this tour with the concept of, “For Players, By Players”. Giving the players what they want, treating them well and offering them what doesn’t exist now with other tours. We will be the biggest mid-major poker tour by the end of 2021

Shin Doubles with Kings

Level 6 : 300/500, 500 ante
Mike Shin
Mike Shin

Action folded around to the cutoff player who raised to 1,400. From the button, Mike Shin re-raised to 4,500. After some debate, Howard Hankin folded the big blind and action returned to the player in the cutoff who declared all-in, having Shin covered. Shin called for his remaining 13,500 chips.

Shin held {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} and was up against his opponent's {a-Spades}{q-Spades}.

After the flop of {4-Clubs}{j-Spades}{3-Spades} there was a chorus of "never easy" comments from the table. But Shin was able to dodge the danger and his kings held up as the board completed {3-Hearts}{5-Hearts}.
