Heeeeeere's Ivey!

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey has just taken his seat inside the tournament room and was greeted by a circus of poker paparazzi and spectators. Within five minutes, Ivey had a boom mic above his head and the table was completely surrounded with photographers and tournament staff. A senior member of the tournament staff eventually ruled that the commotion was too disruptive and he clapped his hands twice and shooed everyone out of the area.

Ivey missed the first three levels of play, though at last count we had his vacant chair at 18,500 in chips, so he currently has about 46 big blinds to work with -- plenty for the man who many consider to be the best in the world. We'll keep you posted on his progress.

A Poker Battle Indeed

Philippe Rouas
Philippe Rouas
We picked up the action in a big hand involving Philippe Rouas. On the river, the board read {2-Spades} {5-Spades} {9-Hearts} {6-Spades} {9-Spades}, and there were about 18,000 chips in the pot already. Rouas' lone opponent checked the action, and he moved all in for 4,575.

The opponent shook his head and muttered something to Rouas in his native French. Rouas replied in French before saying, "You gotta find out... I mean, come on, pay it." After several minutes, his opponent obliged him, reluctantly putting the call into the pot. Rouas said, "Nuts... nuts," as he calmly turned over his {A-Spades} {K-Hearts}. The other player moved his cards right in front of Rouas, and turned them over: {K-Diamonds} {K-Spades}.

Poker Battle founder and CEO Philippe Rouas has been a bit up and down today, and now he finds himself back over the starting mark, sitting with 27,000 chips.

Huffing and Puffing

Roland de Wolfe
Roland de Wolfe
Roland de Wolfe cuts a frustrated figure at the moment. He doesn't seem to be able to get anything going today and his stack, currently at 12,700, highlights this. The most recent pot I witnessed saw him flop trip fours in a multi-way pot but he was forced to split as another player had also flopped trip fours. Dinner break is coming up soon so maybe a break will see him come back re-charged and ready to head in the right direction.

After Dinner All-in Frenzy

Mizrachi: A force now with 65,000
Mizrachi: A force now with 65,000
Shortly after we returned from dinner break a short stack from early position moved all-in. He got value for his hand as three players called him including Michael Mizrachi.

The flop came {5-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {8-Clubs}. Two players checked (Mizrachi being the second one) before the third moved all in trying to force the others out. This didn't work, though, as both the other players moved all in behind him!

The short stack showed {K-?} {10-?}, the player who moved all in first had {A-?} {Q-?}, the next player to move in had {4-?} {4-?} and Mizrachi had {5-?} {5-?}.

The turn came {J-Hearts} and river {10-Clubs} to see Mizrachi scoop the 65,000 pot, eliminate one player and leave two players very short.

Apestyles Takes a Hit

Jon "apestyles" Van Fleet
Jon "apestyles" Van Fleet
We pick up the action on the flop in what would become a sizable heads-up pot between Jon "apestyles" Van Fleet and Besfort Hani.

The dealer runs out the first three community cards, spreading {Q-Spades} {3-Spades} {Q-Clubs}. First to act, Van Fleet leads out with 900 chips, prompting Hani to raise it up to 4,200. Van Fleet lets out a bit of a sigh as he grabs the calling chips from his stack and tosses them forward.

Fourth street brings the {K-Diamonds}, and both players check.

The last card off is the {10-Diamonds}. Van Fleet passes again, while his opponent quickly announces, "All in," pushing out his last 9,900 chips. Van Fleet mulls over his options for just a brief moment before saying, "I call." Hani turns over {Q-Diamonds} {K-Clubs} for a full house. Apestyles musters a "Nice hand," as he counts out his losses and sends his cards back to the dealer. He has dropped back down to around 11,000 chips.

Ivey's Card Reading Guide

Yesterday we reported about the French deck in play here at the Cannes Main Event and it's thrown a curveball to many of the players in today's Day 1b field.

Apparently, one of those players is Phil Ivey who has the card pictured here sitting next to his chip stack.

The text on the paper reads:

Jack ---> Valet ---> V
King ---> Roi ---> R
Queen ---> Dame ---> D

Mizrachi Mania

First, Michael Mizrachi gave 13,250 away from his recently acquired big stack after raising to isolate an all-in bet of an opponent to his right with {Q-Hearts} {Q-Spades}. His opponent had {A-Clubs} {K-Hearts}.

The board ran {K-Clubs} {6-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} {K-Spades} {A-Hearts}. Full house definitely good for that pot. Mizrachi down to 51,000 as a result.

A few minutes later Robert Mizrachi joined in a four-way limped pot that brought a {K-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} flop. It was checked to a French player who bet 1,500 then two players folded before Mizrachi raised to 4,000.

The French player then moved all-in for 24,000 and Mizrachi almost beat him into the pot with his chips. The French player tabled {K-Clubs} {7-Clubs} but was way behind to Mizrachi's {6-Clubs} {6-Spades}.

The set held up, propelling Miazrachi up to 73,000. "Hey Scotty, Christmas came early!" shouted Mizrachi to Scotty Nuygen on the next table.

Time for Eric to get in the action, I think.
