53 Players Remain with Philipp Zukernik in the Lead in Sochi

Level 21 : 150,000/300,000, 300,000 ante
Philipp Zukernik leads the last 53
Philipp Zukernik leads the last 53

Day 3 of the record-breaking 2017 partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Russia $5,300 Main Event at the extravagant Sochi Casino and Resort in the Krasnaya Polyana region saw 227 hopefuls out of a 999-entry strong field return to the tables. Only the top 161 spots were paid and seven levels of 75 minutes each later, only 53 players bagged up chips for Day 4.

Leading the field into the penultimate tournament day is Philipp Zukernik with 40,700,000, closely followed by Karen Arutyunyan with 40,175,000 and Aleksandr Merzhvinskiy (37,750,000), while Zdenek Mach (29,650,000) is the only other non-Russian player among the top 10. Day 1b chip leader Dmitriy Kopyl (30,250,000) also bagged up a very healthy stack once again, and he is joined by such familiar names as Michael Sklenicka (24,900,000), Gleb Tremzin (24,225,000), Konstantin Puchkov (22,725,000), $10,300 High Roller champion David Laka (21,950,000), Vladimir Troyanovskiy (21,025,000) and Oleg Titov (19,100,000).

Other big names still in contention include Jeff Lisandro (13,725,000), Maxim Babko (9,375,000), Andrey Pateychuk (8,550,000), Paul Jackson (8,275,000) and 2017 World Series of Poker Main Event finalist Jack Sinclair (7,700,000), while the sole remaining partypoker Sponsored Pro Dzmitry Urbanovich (2,875,000) will start Day 4 with just seven big blinds.

Day 3 action

Among those to miss out on the money in the first three levels of Day 3 were Jeff Hakim, Govert Metaal, Andrey Gulyy, Konstantinos Nanos, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, partypoker Sponsored Pro Richard Dubini, Maxim Lykov, Kenny Hallaert, Dmitry Chop and Dmitry Gromov. After several double ups on the money bubble, it was Markus Ross that was the last to leave empty-handed. The German partypoker qualifier shoved out of the small blind with king-eight and Pavel Frolov snap-called with pocket kings to leave Ross drawing dead on the turn.

What followed was a rainfall of eliminations that started with Natalia Panchenko, and partypoker Sponsored Pro Anatoly Filatov joined the rail soon after. The entertaining and interactive Russian, as usual in action with his mini camera for the fans, ran with pocket eights into pocket kings and failed to improve. Other notables that fell before the dinner break included Manig Loeser and Vladimir Geshkenbein, while partypoker Sponsored Pro Johnny Lodden had to settle for 102nd place.

Just before that, Sylvia Hewitt was eliminated in a spectacular fashion when she got her stack in with ace-queen for top pair and top kicker on a three-way flop. Both Arsen Karmanukyan and Aleksandr Chernikov had ten-nine suited for the flopped nut straight with Karmanukyan also holding a spades flush draw. Instead, running diamonds gave Chernikov a winning flush and his enormous scream of celebration earned him a massive pot and penalty.

Steve O'Dwyer had to settle for 69th place and Vytautas Milbutas was eliminated on the feature table to bow out in 60th place. By then, Philipp Zukernik, Karen Arutyunyan and Aleksandr Merzhvinskiy were already at the top of the counts. Merzvhinskiy won a huge pot on the feature table with queens versus jacks and Arutyunyan held up with jacks versus ace-king to bust Ivan Arbatskiy. A big portion of Zukernik's stack was the result of cracking the aces of Armen Khachatryan when his jacks improved to a runner-runner straight.

Seven minutes of an additional level were played to reduce the field to the last 54 hopefuls, and another elimination on the feature table during the last hand left just 53 participants in contention. They will return with 68 minutes left at blinds of 200,000/400,000 and a button ante of 400,000, and the six remaining tables are moving to the theatre.

The PokerNews live reporting team will provide all the action until a winner is crowned on Thursday September 14th 2017.

Arutyunyan Busts Arbatsky

Level 21 : 150,000/300,000, 300,000 ante
Ivan Arbatsky
Ivan Arbatsky

While Ivan Arbatsky was a big stack early and mid way through Day 3, Karen Arutyunyan took over that role in the last few hours and just won a flip to bust Arbatsky.

Arbatsky was all in for 9.7 million with the {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} and Arutyunyan looked him up with the {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}. The board came {10-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades}{2-Clubs}{10-Spades} and that was it for Arbatsky.

Steve O'Dwyer Eliminated

Level 21 : 150,000/300,000, 300,000 ante
Steve O'Dwyer
Steve O'Dwyer

After a raise by Aleksandr Merzhvinskiy, Steve O'Dwyer moved all in for just over 15 big blinds out of the small blind. Merzvhinsky called and the cards were tabled.

Steve O'Dwyer: {A-Spades}{7-Clubs}
Aleksandr Merzhvinskiy: {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}

The board of {J-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{2-Spades}{4-Diamonds} provided a jack on the flop and that sent O'Dwyer to the rail, while Merzhvinskiy cemented his role near the top of the leader board.

Puchkov and Zukernik Get Big

Level 20 : 125,000/250,000, 250,000 ante
Armen Khachatryan
Armen Khachatryan

Konstantin Puchkov sent Said Butba and Gurkan Gurgoren to the rail in quick succession to boost his stack significantly. Gurgoren was all in and at risk with the {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts} and Puchkov's {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades} held up on a board of {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{J-Spades}.

One table over, Armen Khachatryan could barely stop complaining in Russian while his stack of around 9.5 million was shipped over to table neighbor Philipp Zukernik. Khachatryan's pocket aces were already in the muck while Zukernik's {J-Hearts}{J-Spades} were tabled. The Canadian had improved to a straight on the board {10-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{K-Spades} to rake in the big pot.

A Big Double for Laka

Level 19 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
David Laka
David Laka

After a raise by the player under the gun and a call by Andrey Razov, David Laka came along from the big blind. Laka check-raised the {J-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} flop from 550,000 to 2.8 million. The initial raiser folded but Razov called to see the {4-Hearts} on the turn.

Laka shoved the turn for 7,450,000 and Razov reluctantly called with {A-}{J-} for top pair, top kicker.

Laka had the {8-Spades}{7-Hearts} for two pair and the {K-Diamonds} river was a blank, giving Laka the double up.

partypoker Qualifier Daniel Clark on Playing with O'Dwyer, Urbanovich, Troyanovskiy and Pateychuk, All At the Same Table!

Level 19 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Daniel Clark After Busting the Main Event
Daniel Clark After Busting the Main Event

Another partypoker qualifier Daniel Clark has just been eliminated from the Main Event whilst on the feature table, and we caught up with him to chat about his experience not only in the tournament as a whole, but playing with some of the world's top players.

"I got in through a $109 satellite," explained Clark. "Then on the $550 satellite I was one of the first 100 players to get through, so we all got our $550 back. So essentially I was free-rolling!

"It's an amazing place. A really lovely place. Honestly, my expectations of Russia weren't what Sochi is like. It's a beautiful place."

Russian players are notorious for being hyper-aggressive, and Clark's experience at the tables this week shows nothing to the contrary.

"It's been mostly fine! Some crazy players! But I only played from Day 2 onwards live, because I played an online Day 1, so I didn't have that much contact with them apart from on those two days."

Shortly before the bubble burst, Clark's table was awash with big names: home-favourites Andrey Pateychuk and Vladimir Troyanovskiy, High Roller regular Steve O'Dwyer and partypoker Sponsored Pro Dzmitry Urbanovich.

"I didn't get much pressure from Urbanovich or O'Dwyer, mainly because they were short but also because the cards fell in such a way that I sort of just avoided spots with them, so I didn't get into any difficulty with them.

"I had one big hand with Troyanovskiy which was a three-bet pot. I ended up getting there on the river, which tilted him I think, but I didn't play many pots with the others."

After the bubble burst, Clark's table was selected as the first feature table for the live stream. It would be Clark's first time ever playing on a livestreamed feature table.

"At first I thought that it would affect me, or that it would phase me a little. But because I got to move away from the main tournament room, it allowed me to focus a bit more on playing.

"I was pretty card dead, so they were easy decisions for the most part. I don't think I had any tough pressure decisions."

Supported by friends and family online, Clark said that it was exciting to know that everyone could see how he was getting on.

"It was also just nice not to have to update people on how my tournament was going!"

Chernikov Busts Karmanukyan and Hewitt; Gets One Round Penalty

Level 19 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Aleksandr Chernikov
Aleksandr Chernikov

Aleksandr Chernikov raised from under the gun and was called by Arsen Karmanukyan on the button and Sylvia Hewitt in the big blind. On the flop of {Q-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{8-Spades}, things heated up as Hewitt check-raised all in after a continuation bet by Charnikov and a raise by Karmanukyan. Both remaining stacks went into the middle as well and the cards were turned over.

Hewitt: {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}
Karmanukyan: {10-Spades}{9-Spades}
Chernikov: {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

Hewitt needed running outs while Karmanukyan was freerolling with the straight and flopped flush draw. However, the {8-Diamonds} turn made the three-way all in even more spicy and Chernikov pointed to the diamond.

Sure enough, the {3-Diamonds} river gave Chernikov the back door flush and he let out a scream that the entire upper floor of the casino could hear. With both opponents eliminated, Chernikov raked in the massive pot and was subsequently given a one-round penalty for excessive celebration.

partypoker Sponsored Pro Johnny Lodden Eliminated

Level 19 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Johnny Lodden
Johnny Lodden

We noticed Johnny Lodden walking away from the tournament area and we asked him how he had been eliminated.

"I ran a huge bluff first," he explained, "And that cost me more than half my stack.

"I then pushed with 15 big blinds from the button with {a-}{q-} and the big blind called with {k-}{j-}."

Needless to say, his ace-queen did not hold up, and Lodden, who has more than $2 million in lifetime earnings, walks away with $7,500 and his first lifetime Russian cash.

"Everything's a Bonus!" for partypoker Qualifier Peter Smyth

Level 19 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Peter Smyth
Peter Smyth

Peter Smyth is sat with a below-average stack here on Day 3 of the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Russia Main Event, but is in the money having qualified for just $500.

"I don't tend to play much live," he said to us, "I play a lot online, and the Phases on partypoker were great.

"The problem was that I qualified with only a week to go before the tournament, so because I live in the north of England, I had to rush down to London and apply for a visa. I had to spend two nights in a hotel!

"I'm more pleased now I'm here. Great flight via Istanbul; the hotel is marvellous, and Sochi is absolutely beautiful. I tend to use these trips as a bit of a holiday as I'm much better online!

Location Casino

"Because of how I played online, I came into Day 1 with around four million in chips so I could sit back and relax. I got up to seven million and thought to myself 'Ah, this will be easy.'

"Then I ran kings into aces and kings into queen-deuce, so everything after that has been a bonus!"
