Day 1 of the Super High Roller event at the 2012 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure has come to an end here at the Atlantis Casino and Resort. A field of 30 came to play and after two players (Bill Perkins and Jonathan Duhamel) opted to re-enter, an official 32 entries generated a prize pool of $3,136,000 with a first-place prize of $1,254,400. After eight levels of Day 1 play, Isaac Haxton leads the remaining 18 players with 1,240,000.

Haxton got off to a great start as he jumped out to the early chip lead during Level 2. The blinds were 1,200/2,400 with a 300 ante and Viktor "Isildur1" Blom kicked off the action with a raise to 2,600 from the hijack. Haxton was in the small blind and three-bet to 10,500, but that didn't stop Jonathan Duhamel (in the big blind) from four-betting to 24,200. Blom bowed out, but Haxton had other ideas. He five-bet to 42,200, leading to Duhamel six-bet shoving for about 205,000. Haxton called with {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} and won a race against Duhamel's {A-Clubs}{K-Spades} when the board ran out {J-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. That hand gave Haxton about 530,000, more than double the 250,000 starting stack.

Haxton further increased his stack towards the end of the day when he busted Justin Smith. From the hijack, Smith opened to 10,000 at the 2,000/4,000/500 level. Haxton three-bet to 30,000 from the small blind, and upon seeing Smith four-bet shove for about 246,000, he was happy to call with {J-Hearts}{J-Spades} and chips to spare. Smith held {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}, but was unable to hit the {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{3-Spades} board. That gave Haxton about 930,000 en route to his finishing the day with 1,240,000.

Among those who will not be returning on Day 2 is defending champion Eugene Katchalov. After Yevgeniy Timoshenko four-bet all in with the bigger stack, Katchalov opted to call for his tournament life with {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}. Timoshenko was ahead with {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds} and held through the {10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Spades} board. Also failing to make it through Day 1 were Matt Glantz, Shawn Buchanan, Philipp Gruissem, David Benefield, Terje Augdal, Alexey Repik, Bill Perkins (twice), Sandor Demjan, and Masa Kagawa.

Wrap it Up

[user66118] • Level 8: 2,500-5,000, 500 ante

Day 1 is in the bag, and we'll be back in just a moment with a few closing remarks.

Double for ElkY

Bertrand Grospellier
Bertrand Grospellier

Jason Mercier raised to 10,000 from the hijack seat and fellow Team PokerStars Pro Betrand "ElkY" Grospellier reraised all in from the button for 71,500. Play folded back to Mercier and he took a few moments to call.

Mercier: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}
Grospellier: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

The poker gods were good to Grospellier on this one as he doubled up on the {A-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} board with two pair.

Four More Hands

donpeters • Level 8: 2,500-5,000, 500 ante

The clock has been paused and each table will play four more hands before the players bag and tag for the night.

Haxton Over a Million

Isaac Haxton leads the way.
Isaac Haxton leads the way.

Isaac Haxton opened to 10,000 from the hijack seat, Chance Kornuth called from the cutoff, and Tom Marchese joined the party on the button. The flop fell {2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{j-Clubs}, and the action checked to Marchese, who fired 7,500. Haxton called, and Kornuth raised to 21,000. Both Marchese and Haxton called.

The three players checked on the turn ({6-Hearts}) and the river ({8-Spades}), and Haxton opened up {j-Spades}{9-Spades} for a pair of jacks. Kornuth and Marchese both mucked, and Haxton won the pot.

Blom Sends Another Packing

Blom is all smiles now
Blom is all smiles now

It's the Viktor Blom show at Table 2 right now. In the last pot, we picked up heads-up action between he and Matt Glantz, the latter betting out on the {10-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds}. When he did, Blom check-raised with a big stack of green chips, enough to cover his opponent. Glantz made the quick call for his last ~150,000, and the cards were on their backs.

Blom: {A-Spades} {J-Clubs}
Glantz: {A-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}

Glantz was behind as the cards lay, but he had a fair amount of help cards to try and chase down. The turn {J-Hearts} stole a couple of those outs, though, and the river {A-Hearts} was not enough to get him over the hump.

With that, Glantz has become the latest of Blom's victims, and the blonde-topped Swede is up in contention for the chip lead with just shy of 800,000.
