Play Slows Down

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

There are still nine players in the race for the PCA High Roller title as play has slowed down considerably. Over the last six hands we saw a bunch of flops but not a lot of action past that.

The biggest recent hand was played between Jake Schindler, who raised to 40,000 under the gun, and Joao Vieira, who three-bet to 117,000. The action folded back to Schindler who called after which the flop brought {Q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{3-Hearts}.

Schindler check-folded to Vieira's 120,000-chip bet and the Portugese pro picked up this pot.

Kings vs. Kings

From middle position, Team PokerStars Pro and defending champion Vanessa Selbst raised to 52,000. Aleksandr Denisov reraised to 127,000 from the hijack seat, and then play moved to 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Greg Merson in the small blind. Merson reraised and made it 280,000 to go. The blinds and Selbst folded, then Denisov went into the tank.

Denisov tanked for a couple of minutes before someone eventually called the clock. Before the floor staff could arrive at the table to start the countdown, Denisov reraised all in for around 800,000. Merson quickly called.

Both players tabled pocket kings. Merson had the red ones with the {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}, and Denisov had the black ones with the {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}. The flop, turn, and river ran out {9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}, and the two chopped up the pot.

Marvin Rettenmaier Eliminated in 9th Place ($130,720)

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Marvin Rettenmaier -- 9th Place
Marvin Rettenmaier -- 9th Place

Marvin Rettenmaier raised to 52,000 from the hijack seat, and then Joao Vieira reraised to 118,000 from the cutoff position. Action folded back to Rettenmaier and he gave it up, allowing Vieira to take the pot.

On the very next hand, Rettenmaier opened again to 52,000. This time, it was Greg Merson who reraised. Merson did so from the cutoff seat and made it 105,000 to go. After play folded back to Rettenmaier, he took a little bit of time, then moved all in.

Merson looked as though he was going to snap-call, even almost dropping chips into the middle, but then he stopped himself abruptly and asked the dealer for a count. Merson admitted that he thought Rettenmaier had opened with a stack of around 500,000, but his shove was actually worth 623,000.

After a little bit of thought, Merson called with the {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}. Rettenmaier tabled the {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and it was off to the races.

The flop gave Merson the lead when the {A-Clubs}{9-Spades}{4-Clubs} fell. The turn was the {Q-Diamonds}, and now Rettenmaier needed to find an eight on the river. The {9-Diamonds} was close to an eight, but not what Rettenmaier was looking for. He was eliminated in ninth place and earned $130,720 for his finish. Merson climbed over 2 million in chips.
