Who Will Make The 2016 PCA Main Event Final Table?

Can Leonardo Pires Carry His Chip Lead to the Final Table?
Can Leonardo Pires Carry His Chip Lead to the Final Table?

The title of this post is the biggest question of the day, as just 19 players remain, all hoping to make the final table of one of the biggest PokerStars events of the year. Leading the way is the unstoppable Brazilian Leonardo Pires, who's taking a massive chip lead worth 4.5 million chips.

The action resumes with plenty of top pros still in the hunt, including British phenoms Toby Lewis and Stephen Chidwick, former PCA Main Event runner up Tony Gregg, WSOP bracelet winner Matt Waxman and Aussie Million champion Ami Barer.

Canadian pro Mike Watson, with more than $8.3 million in live tournament earnings is one of the most successful pros still in the field, and he'll be one to reckon with as well.

The penultimate day will prove to be an exciting one as colorful characters Martin McCormick, Randy Kritzer, Fabian Ortiz and Ken Demlakian are also vying for a spot at the final table.

The goal today is to play down to a final table of six, at the tournament director's discretion, but the tournament will at least continue until there are eight players remaining.

Stay tuned to PokerNews.com for coverage of this exciting day of poker, as we will bring you all the live updates, chip counts and photos of the 2016 PCA Main Event.

Ulmer: {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Paur: {K-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}

The board ran out {K-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{A-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} and Paur exited the tournament in 19th place.

Fedor Holz Eliminated in 18th Place ($32,360)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Fedor Holz
Fedor Holz

The action folded to Fedor Holz who limped from the small blind and Ken Demlakian called from the big blind.

The flop showed {A-Clubs}{10-Spades}{7-Hearts} and Holz bet 30,000.

"You hit a set already?" Demlakian said as he put in the call.

"I'm wearing your country's shirt and I'm getting bullied by you," Demlakian continued, as he was indeed wearing Germany's national soccer team jersey.

Holz checked the {7-Clubs} turn and Demlakian bet 70,000.

"Do you like that, 70 for a seven?" Demlakian said.

Holz made the call and on the river the {5-Hearts} hit, on which Holz checked again, and Demlakian said, "You're confusing me."

"You called 70,000 out of a 320,000 stack," Demlakian said, before eventually moving all in to put Holz at risk with just 248,000 chips left.

Holz went deep into the tank and Demlakian said, "You got the ten?"

"No, I'm better than that," Holz responded.

"You're better the ten, but you don't have the ace," Demlakian continued.

"Yes," Holz said, "It's so weird, you're confident and nervous at the same time."

"Speak to my wife," Demlakian said, getting a laugh out of Holz.

Finally Holz called, and Demlakian turned over what the German pro feared most, {9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}.

"Good game," Holz said, as he tabled his {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades} and exited the tournament in 18th place.

Fabian Oritz Eliminated in 17th Place ($36,860)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Fabian Ortiz
Fabian Ortiz

In a drastic turn of events, 2014's eighth-place finisher in this event Fabian Ortiz has fallen from being one of the biggest stacks to being out the door in 17th place.

The action started on Vladimir Troyanovskiy who raised to 55,000 under the gun and Fabian Ortiz called from his direct left. Leonardo Pires three-bet from the button to 130,000 and Troyanovskiy folded, but Ortiz made the call.

The flop brought out {Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and Ortiz checked to Pires who bet 175,000 and the Argentinian pro made the call.

On the turn the {5-Hearts} hit and Ortiz checked again, after which Pires shoved instantly for 1.1 million effectively.

Ortiz went into the tank for several minutes, but ultimately he made the call.

Pires: {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Ortiz: {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}

The river was the {8-Diamonds} and all of a sudden Ortiz found himself on the rail after having started the day with a massive 2.3 million-chip stack, and Pires now sits on 6,268,000. There will be a full redraw right now, after which play continues on two tables of eight.

Big Double Up For Watson Through Kritzer

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Mike Watson
Mike Watson

Mike Watson raised from the cutoff to 50,000 and Ken Demlakian three-bet to 133,000 from the button. Randy Kritzer called from the big blind and the action was back on Watson.

Watson tanked for a bit before making the call, and with 432,000 chips in the middle the flop showed {10-Spades}{8-Spades}{9-Diamonds}.

Kritzer was first to act and he checked, and Watson followed suit, as did Demlakian.

On the turn the {3-Spades} hit and Kritzer bet 200,000, which was called by Watson. The river was the {A-Diamonds} and Kritzer bet another 200,000.

Watson moved all in for 473,000 and Kritzer called right away. Watson showed {A-Spades}{4-Spades} for the nut flush, and Kritzer showed his {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, for a set, which ended up in the muck.

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Mike Watson
Mike Watson

With four players involved, the flop showed {2-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{6-Spades} and Leonardo Pires led out for 214,000 into a pot of 224,000 from the big blind.

Mike Watson made the call from the hijack and Ken Demlakian and Randy Kritzer folded.

The turn was the {3-Diamonds} and the action was on Pires who bet 500,000 right away, blowing the pot up to to 1,152,000.

Watson made the call, and with 1.6 million in the middle, Pires snap-shoved all in for 1,010,000 effectively on the {J-Diamonds} river.

Watson started counting down his stack, and went into the tank very deep trying to make up his mind.

In the end Watson slammed a stack of chips into the middle, and Pires announced, "Six" as he showed {K-Hearts}{6-Hearts}.

Watson showed {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} and he raked in this massive pot for back-to-back double ups.

Fabian Chauriye Eliminated in 16th Place ($36,860)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Fabian Chauriye (R) - 16th Place
Fabian Chauriye (R) - 16th Place

David Eldridge raised to 55,000 from middle position and Phillip McAllister three-bet to 142,000 from the hijack. Fabian Chauriye then four-bet jammed for 449,000 from the small blind, Eldridge folded, and McAllister made the call.

McAllister: {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}
Chauriye: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

It was a race, but Chauriye needed to improve to stay alive. He flinched a bit when the {4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} flop missed him, and then called for an ace when the {9-Spades} blanked on the turn. Chauriye needed either an ace or king on the river to stay alive, but it was not to be as the {9-Hearts} bricked.

"Good game everyone," Chauriye offered. "Good luck."

Ami Barer Eliminated in 15th Place ($41,360)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Ami Barer - 15th Place
Ami Barer - 15th Place

A short-stacked Ami Barer got his stack of 582,000 all in preflop and was in a classic race against Mike Watson.

Watson: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Barer: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}

Barer needed to improve, and he did just that on the {k-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} flop. The {6-Spades} turn meant Barer only needed to dodge one of two queens on the river, but that proved easier said than done as the {Q-Hearts} spiked to give Watson a set!

With that, the 2014 Aussie Millions champ took his leave in 15th place for $41,360.

Randy Kritzer raised to 80,000 under the gun and Leonardo Pires made it 178,000 from his direct left. The action folded back to Kritzer, and he made the call.

The flop brought out {Q-Clubs}{2-Spades}{2-Hearts} and Kritzer checked to Pires, who moved all in right away. Kritzer called all in for 903,000 and another huge pot was created.

Kritzer: {Q-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Pires: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

The turn brought the {J-Diamonds} and the river the {3-Diamonds}, giving Kritzer a full double up, leaving Pires with less than the average stack for the first time in over four days. Pires went from 6.2 million to 1,790,000 in one level, and the players are now on break.
