Day 2 Action

A tough field filled with notable players turned out for the event but several could not find their way to Day 2, including Benny Glaser, Harry Lodge, Chino Rheem, Julien Martini, Keith Lehr, Jason Wheeler, Gianluca Speranza, Ryan Riess and PokerStars Ambassador Fintan Hand.

Fellow PokerStars Ambassador Benjamin “Spraggy” Spragg was active throughout the day and he found his way into the money, but he couldn’t survive to see Day 2. Spragg has now cashed at five straight major PokerStars events, including every EPT dating back to the most recent trip to Monte Carlo.

Andrew Chen got off to a hot start on Monday when he found a full double with pocket kings against the Big Slick of Adrian State. Chen previously won the NAPT Bounty Shootout at the 2011 PCA, as well as a $2,150 event at EPT Sanremo and the $10,300 High Roller at EPT London, both in 2014. He finished with 200,000 and he will return on Tuesday for a shot at his first big score since 2018.

Konnikova held strong throughout the day, but her big move came in the late levels when she cracked Daniel De Sousa Custodio's pocket queens for a big double when her suited eight-seven made a flush on the river. She won this tournament in 2018, and she will return on Tuesday with a real chance to do it again.

Among the other players returning for Day 2 are Martin Johnstone, Sebastian Toro, Jose Severino, Jonathan Little, Andras Nemeth, Shawn Buchanan, and Iliodoros Kamatakis.

Maria Konnikova
Maria Konnikova

The action was picked up in a pot of 42,000 on a flop showing {10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{3-Diamonds}. Daniel De Sousa Custodio bet out 30,000 from the cutoff and Maria Konnikova moved all in for 169,000 next to act. Custodio took a few seconds before making the call and the cards were on their backs.

Maria Konnikova: {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Daniel De Sousa Custodio: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

It was virtually a coin flip between the queens for Custodio and the open-ended straight draw and flush draw for Konnikova. The turn came the {2-Clubs} and the river fell the {4-Diamonds}, giving Konnikova a flush and a massive double up late into Day 2.

Ben Spragg

The action folded around to Benjamin Spragg on the button who moved all in for 22,000. The small blind quickly folded and Martin Johnstone, after some hesitation, made the call to put Spragg at risk.

Benjamin Spragg: {j-Spades}{10-Spades}
Martin Johnstone: {10-Hearts}{5-Hearts}

Spragg found himself in great shape preflop but when the board ran out {7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, it was the rivered straight for Johnstone that sent the PokerStars Ambassador to the payout desk.

Yau Gets a Shove Through; Spragg Enjoying His "Vacation"

Level 14 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Benjamin Spragg
Benjamin Spragg

"Why don't you set something up like that for streaming live poker?" Ethan "Rampage" Yau asked Benjamin "Spraggy" Spragg in reference to one of the few stationary cameras that have been set up by players to film the live action.

"I can't be bothered. I tried it, but it's too much hassle," Spragg, the popular Twitch streamer, replied. "Live poker is my vacation. I'm hoping that I can just appear on the five or six other poker vlogs that are here right now."

Meanwhile, Justas Semaska raised to 6,000 from the cutoff before Martin Johnstone made it 16,000 from the button. Not to be outdone, Yau shoved from the small blind for around 105,000. Both players tossed their hands in the muck and Yau took the pot.

Despite getting away from this one, Johnstone has gone on a tear in recent levels and he's making his way towards the 400,000 mark.
