Van Wins Massive Pot for the Lead

Level 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Dinh Tien Van
Dinh Tien Van

A disgusted Kunal Patni saw how a large pot was shipped over to Dinh Tien Van while Ly Huong Le was sitting on her phone and texting while all her chips were gone. Only the cards were still exposed as the board was already mucked.

Patni's {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} had been an overpair to a ten-high board on which he raised a {10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{9-} turn to 12,000 and was cold-called by Van. Le had then jammed with the {k-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and that dragged Patni further into the pot only to see Van get it in with {a-Clubs}{3-Clubs} for trips treys.

The river was a blank and Van soared to five times the average.

Dung Tien Pham

Joining the action on the {q-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Spades}{3-Clubs} turn, Dung Tien Pham faced a bet worth 3,500 and then made it 8,500 to go on the button. His opponent called and then checked the {6-Diamonds} river. Pham bet 16,100 with a few chips behind and was snap-called to reveal the {q-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for a full house as the winning hand.

Fewer Chips But a Caesars Salad for Falcon

Level 4 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante
Michael Falcon
Michael Falcon

Jonas Rothmund defended his big blind against a raise by Tin Lam Wong and then check-raised the {k-Spades}{j-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop from 1,000 to 4,500. Wong folded and flashed the {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} to which Rothmund replied "same hand" with a grin on the face.

One hand later it folded to the German and Michael Falcon in the big blind asked "you gonna fold now?" Rothmund then limped and Falcon made it 1,400 to go. Rothmund limp-raised to 6,400 and Falcon was not a quitter as he stuck around.

The {q-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop was bet by Rothmund for 4,000 and Falcon called. Both checked the {5-Spades} turn and Rothmund bet the {9-Hearts} river for 22,000. "Too much ... the problem is, I just got my Caesars Salad and don't want to leave this table," Falcon sighed.

Once he folded, the Dane whispered "I had pocket tens".

Picking up the action on the three-way flop of {j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, Jack Wu led for 1,200 in the big blind. James Mendoza raised to 4,200 from an early position and was called by Xuan Van Nguyen as well as Wu. The {8-Spades} fell on the turn and it now checked to Mendoza, who bet 15,000.

Nguyen folded, Wu jammed for 21,800 and Mendoza instantly called.

Chi-Jen Chu was all-in with a very short stack out of the blinds and turned over the {a-Hearts}{4-Clubs}. He was up against {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and retained a very narrow lead on the {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} board. "Three double ups to go," he joked in table chat and Jonas Rothmund started engaging with him.

Viet Hoang Dang
Viet Hoang Dang

In a battle button versus big blind, the board showed {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{6-Spades} and the action checked to Viet Hoang Dang. He bet 10,000 into a pot of around 12,000 and Jason Lau quickly called by tossing in two yellow T-5,000 chips. Dang rolled over the {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for the nut flush and that won the pot.

Large Field Expected for Day 1b of the 2022 Poker Dream Vietnam Main Event

Kunal Patni expected among the 1b participants
Kunal Patni expected among the 1b participants

The second and penultimate starting day of the 2022 Poker Dream Vietnam VND 25,000,000 (~ $1,019) Main Event is slated to get underway at 1pm local time. All things point towards a stellar turnout for the crown jewel of the new live poker series in the Asia-Pacific region and there is little doubt that the VND 10,000,000,000 (~ $407,000) guarantee will be surpassed by a significant amount.

Yesterday's first flight attracted a field if 293 entries and 72 players advanced to Day 2 at the luxury five-star Hoiana Resort & Golf near Hoi An and an even bigger turnout is expected for the second regular starting day. All players receive 30,000 in chips and 12 levels of 40 minutes each are scheduled for Day 1b. The late registration and re-entry period is open for the first nine levels until approximately 8.20 pm local time with a break every three levels and a 50-minute dinner break to take advantage of the nearby buffet in the Hotel resort.

Players can participate in multiple starting days even if they have already bagged up chips in a previous starting day. If they advance more than once, the larger chip tally will be carried over to Day 2 while the lower stack is taken out of play. On Day 2, the level duration increases to 50 minutes each whereas the final day will feature levels of 60 minutes each.

One further chance awaits for all those who prefer the more fast-paced turbo heat 1c as of 8pm, which has a level duration of 20 minutes each and just one break. The late registration closes at approximately 11.30pm for that one and the action concludes until the last flight has reached the combined average stack of all qualifiers in the previous two heats.

It seems very likely that the attendance record of the inaugural Poker Dream Malaysia 2022 Main Event at the Resorts World Genting in Kuala Lumpur back in July 2022 with 654 entries will be surpassed. The prize pool back then reached nearly three times of the initial guarantee, a scenario that may be too far-fetched for Hoi An. Notable finalists were Eric Wasylenko, Wai Kiat Lee, Danny Huynh, and David Erquiaga. Lee has already been playing in other events during the stop and Erquiaga bagged a healthy stack on Day 1a.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the tournament floor from start to finish for what shapes up to be an exciting next few days of live poker action in Asia. All updates will focus on Day 1b while the final chip counts for 1c will be provided later on as well.
