Welcome to the 2023 Poker Dream Manila Short Deck Super High Roller Ante-Only "White Horse Cup"

PokerDream Trophies
PokerDream Trophies

Since April 26, 2023, the up-and-coming Poker Dream live poker series has been taking place for its fourth edition, and it will run all the way until May 7, 2023. With a mix of affordable buy-ins and high-stakes competitions, it represents the best of both worlds for poker enthusiasts from near and far.

The entire festival at the Newport World Resorts Integrated Resort in Metro Manila, right across the international airport, comes with a total of PHP 95 million in guarantees, which equals approximately $1.7 million. While many locals are expected to take part in the lower buy-ins, familiar high-stakes regulars are expected to enter the fray for the High Roller competitions, including the top players from Malaysia.

One of the highlights of Poker Dream Manila 2023 is the Short Deck Super High Roller Ante-Only "White Horse Cup", which comes with a buy-in of PHP 1,300,000 ($24,873). A total guarantee of PHP 55,000,000 awaits, and it is the third Short Deck tournament of the series. So far, two events with buy-ins of PHP 200,000 and PHP 280,000 have taken place, with the latter currently in the heads-up stage as Rene van Krevelen takes on Malaysia's Eng Siang Ewe.

The level duration for this two-day event is 40 minutes each until a winner is crowned and all players receive 300,000 in chips, which can be used in three single bullets of 100,000 as has been the case ever since the latest craze took the live poker scene by storm. It all starts with 200 antes in the first level of the day as everyone has to invest 500 chips each hand and the button pays two times as much.

Day 1 will feature a total of 12 levels and late registration closes at the end of Level 8 and following break. Expect the likes of Wai Kin Yong, Winfred Yu, Danny Tang, and Wei Hsiang Yeu to enter the fray along with several other Short Deck specialists. Multiple reentry is allowed until the end of the registration, and the tournament also features a 30-second shot clock throughout the entire duration. All bullets will come into play as of Level 8, the last level during the registration period.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor throughout the entire tournament, which will play down to a winner on Monday, May 1, 2023. Selected events of the schedule are also live-streamed on the Poker Dream social media channels as well.

Sasaki Loses Another Bullet

Level 1 : Blinds 0/0, 500 ante
Wai Kiat Lee
Wai Kiat Lee

With his cards already dragged into the muck, Nobuaki Sasaki saw his stack reduced to a mere 9,000 after Wai Kiat Lee had doubled through him. The 88 of Lee made quads to leave his opponent drawing dead on a king-high turn.

Lee then raised from under the gun and Sasaki jammed for 8,500. Yun Wah Yap as latest entry called in the small blind only to fold suited connectors to a shove by Lee.

Nobuaki Sasaki: KQ
Wai Kiat Lee: AJ

The K107AA board delivered trips aces to Lee as he also claimed the last few chips of Sasaki, who redeemed his final bullet on the first entry.

Winfred Yu
Winfred Yu

Three-ways to the KQ10 flop, Winfred Yu jams over the top when he faces a reraise to 32,000 by he button and the call by Jun Wah Yap. The button opted to fold, but Yap called.

Winfred Yu: AJ
Jun Wah Yap: QQ

Yu's flopped broadway with the flush draw locked up the double for 72,500 on the 6 turn with an unbeatable flush as the 10 river gave Yap a now meaningless full house.

Final Bullet for Yeu and Tang

Level 2 : Blinds 0/0, 1,000 ante
Danny Tang
Danny Tang

On a three-way flop of A107, Winfred Yu bet 15,000 and then folded to the all-in of Wei Hsiang Yeu and the reshove by a White Horse Club player.

Yeu tabled the A10 for the top two pair and they are up against 98 for the open-ended straight draw. On a J turn and 7 river runout, the run-bad of Yeu continued and he redeemed the final bullet.

Danny Tang is also down to the last bullet as well. He previously ran into a flopped flush and the very same White Horse Club member then jammed a 987A turn out of the big blind. Tang used two time bank extensions and called it off with the 98 for two pair. That was up against JJ and the river brought the K.

Level 3 : Blinds 0/0, 1,500 ante
Rene van Krevelen
Rene van Krevelen

The PHP 280,000 Short Deck Event winner Rene van Krevelen called bets of 3,000 on the K96 flop and 8,000 on the J turn while on the button. His opponent was Wai Kiat Lee in the small blind, who then bet 70,000 on the A river when the flush draw completed.

Van Krevelen tossed in two time bank extensions right away and eventually called. Lee tabled the AA for a set of aces, which beat the 99 of van Krevelen.

Wai Kiat Lee

All chips go in the middle in three-way action as a White Horse Club player on the button, Wai Kiat Lee from under the gun and Wai Kin Yong from one seat over splash their chips in.

Button: AJ
Wai Kin Yong: 109
Wai Kiat Lee: AQ

The Q87710 board kept Lee ahead all the way as he dodged plenty of outs to knock out an opponent and force Yong to use a bullet on his second entry. Lee was the first player to register for the event and currently sits near the top of the leaderboard.

Ermin Eliminated; Yu Scoops Large Pot to Take Lead

Level 5 : Blinds 0/0, 3,000 ante
Winfred Yu

Soon after redeeming the third and final bullet, Ivan Ermin was all-in once more. This time, two players went to war as Winfred Yu and Wei Hsiang Yeu also got in their bigger stacks to create a pot of nearly seven figures.

Ivan Ermin: AK
Winfred Yu: JJ
Wei Hsiang Yeu: KK

The J97 flop improved Yu to a set and the 9 turn made that a full house. Ermin was alive with his flush draw while Yeu had a single out to avoid a major blow. Nothing changed with the 9 river and Yu doubled through Yeu for 397,000 in the biggest pot of the tournament so far.

"All limped and there was a short stack," Yu mentioned when referring to what had just happened.

Rene van Krevelen

Ivan Ermin open-jammed a shorter stack with the 98 and was looked up by Rene van Krevelen with the A10.

The AA10 flop left Ermin drawing dead as the J turn and 8 river were no longer significant.

Moments later, another short stack got it in with the J9 and Hing Yaung Chow happily called with the A10. The suited ace made broadway on the AJ7QK runout as yet another bullet had to be redeemed.

Triple Ups for Phua and Loon

Level 8 : Blinds 0/0, 6,000 ante

Lun Loon open-jammed for 306,000 and then saw Wei Hsiang Yeu also move all-in. Paul Phua contemplated to make it a three-way all-in from the hijack, which he indeed did after a few seconds. Both players behind folded and the cards were revealed.

Paul Phua 108
Lun Loon: AQ
Wei Hsiang Yeu: AQ

Yong had put both players on ace-king but was equally happy to see identical hands, too. The A96 flop gave Yong a gutshot straight flush draw, which didn't get there on the 6 turn just yet. However, the 7 river completed the straight and he tripled for 287,000.

Loon was left very short and tripled in the very next hand versus Yeu and Jun Wah Yap.

Lun Loon: 66
Wei Hsiang Yeu: K10
Jun Wah Yap: QQ

The best hand ended up worst on the J97K6 board as Loon tripled with a two-outer and Yeu doubled for 118,000 against Yap.
