Wong Wins From Cheong

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Macau regular Sam Cheong will be a familiar face to many who have played a poker tournament in Macau as he plays nearly every event. Today is no exception and Cheong is in the thick of the action as we arrived at his table, though we are not sure for how much longer after the following hand played out.

We caught the action on the river with the community cards spread {j-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{7-Spades} {6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} with over 7,000 already in the middle of the table. Sitting in the big blind Cheong checked the action over to Wong, who slid out a bet of 2,250 to send Cheong into tank mode.

It is difficult to put Cheong on any hand, just because he is happy to make a move if he thinks a player is weak (or he thinks can get away with it) and his range of hands is wide.

Cheong chose to put Wong to the test and check-raised to 13,250 in total and it was Wong’s turn to tank. It was a big call as should he make it and lose Wong would be left with just 8,000 in chips and he thought long and hard before eventually throwing in the call.

Cheong rolled over {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs} for top pair, but this was not enough to beat Wong’s turned two pair and the Hong Kong player flipped over {6-Spades}{3-Spades} to take the pot and a big bite out of Cheong’s stack. Wong climbed to a little over 40,000 in chips while Cheong slumped to a measly 5,300.

Dong Dips into his Bag of Tricks

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Gui Dong
Gui Dong

One thing we have noticed about Gui Dong is that he like to play a lot of pots early and seems to thrive off the action. It should come as no surprise then, that the Chinese player has been extremely active and we caught him in action in two big back-to-back hands.

In the first Dong was battling against Vietnam’s Thinh Nguyen Chi when we arrived at the table with the action already at the river and 20,000 already in the pot with the community cards reading {8-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {k-Diamonds}.

Sitting in the big blind Dong was first to act, and with just 15,075 left in his stack, he decided to pull the trigger and move all-in to send Chi deep into the tank, where he remained for several minutes until one of the other players at the table called for the clock.

Chi eventually folded with seconds to spare leaving Dong to rake in the pot and climb to 37,200 while the Vietnamese player dropped to just under 30,000 in chips.

Chi raised the very next hand, making it 500 to go from the cutoff with Hong Kong’s Liu Yueming (cutoff) and the button making the call before Dong was at it again, squeezing to 2,100 from the small blind.

Chi folded immediately but Yueming made the call and after the button also folded the action went heads-up to a flop of {4-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, which Dong led for 2,700.

Yueming made the call once more to bring play to the {10-Diamonds} turn, which brought a check from Dong. Yueming reached for chips and bet out 4,500. It appeared that Dong was just playing possum and he swiftly check-raised to 11,500 in total, bring a speedy fold from Yueming who dropped to 20,000 after the hand, while Dong climbed to 47,500.

Peng Breaks Record for Worlds Longest Hand, Liu Wins

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante

Actually, that first part isn’t true, but it was a lengthy hand that took 15-minutes to play out from start to finish and there was so much tanking involved that the Chinese army had to send out a request for more armor.

It all started when Zhonglai Peng opened to 550 from the cutoff and Li Fu Liu re-raised to 1,300 from the button. Peng played with his chips a little and only took around a minute or so before deciding to three-bet to 3,700 and it was Liu’s turn to tank.

Liu thought for around 30-seconds before choosing to four-bet, making it 7,300 to go, leaving himself 11,500 behind. An indecisive Peng battened down the hatches and tanked for a further five minutes (we know because we were watching the tournament clock tick down) before grudgingly tossing in the call.

The extremely wet {q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} flop saw Peng tank some more, only for around minute or so this time, before checking the action over to Liu.

With less than a pot-sized bet left Liu had two moves available and picked the more aggressive of the two options, moving all-in for 11,500.

This is when the real tanking started and the tournament clock ticked down to 25 minutes as Peng tanked for what felt like an eternity, but was probably closer to nine minutes or so before anti-climatically folding, to a huge sigh from the rest of the table. Liu climbed to 27,000 after that lengthy hand while Peng still has plenty of chips and is sitting on 44,500.

Hong Stifles Luo’s Return

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

Xixiang Luo is another player who is returning for a second attempt at fortune and glory here on Day 1B of the Poker King Cup Macau Main Event, though he has not had the best of starts so far.

It did not get any better for Luo after tangling in a hand against China’s Hong Zhu. Pre-flop it was Luo who was the initial aggressor, opening the action with a min-raise to 600 from the hi-jack with Zhu making the call from the cutoff.

Both blinds bowed out to take the action heads-up to a flop of {j-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}, which Luo led for 450. Zhu did not take long to make the call and the dealer burned and turned the {8-Hearts}.

Luo slowed down and checked, opening the door for Zhu who decided to up the stakes and made it 1,675 to go. Luo folded swiftly and dropped down to 13,000 and will need to hit that run good soon if he wants to make Day 2, while Zhu climbed to 41,200.

Chi Doubles Through Pu

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Thinh Nguyen Chi
Thinh Nguyen Chi

It looked like Vietnam’s Thinh Nguyen Chi and China’s Gui Dong were all set to battle it out once again, but then Wei Ran Pu had to get in the way and spoil all the fun. However, being as Chi has just earned himself a double up at Pu’s expense we are sure he was not unhappy with the result.

Pre-flop there had been an under-the-gun limp before Dong popped it up to 650 to go from middle position. Pu made the call from the button, as did the small blind, before Chi re-popped to 2,225 in total, leaving himself 13,775 behind.

The limper folded but Dong looked like he wanted to tango and threw in the call, as did Pu and it was three-way to a flop of {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{8-Spades}.

Chi did not look happy about the ace and checked the action over to Dong, who checked behind. Pu however, seemed to like the flop just fine and fired out a two-thirds pot bet of 4,200.

Chi mulled it over as this represented a significant proportion of his remaining chips, but eventually decided to call a slid a single blue 5k chip over the line. Dong looked perplexed and said something to that effect, eventually throwing his cards into the muck to take the action heads-up to the {3-Hearts} turn.

This brought a second check from Chi, who now had just 9,575 remaining and Pu decided to test his mettle, moving all-in for 48,275, though in reality he was only risking what Chi had left.

The Vietnamese player thought long and hard, but being as a flush draw was most definitely in Pu’s range he eventually decided to make the call.

It was the right one, and Pu rolled over {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, which was trailing to Chi’s {q-Clubs}{q-Spades} and the latter thumped the table in appreciation of the fact he had just made a good call.

Chi’s tenacity was rewarded when the river bricked out and came down {10-Spades} to grant the Vietnamese player the double.
