Just eight players now remain in contention for the trophy, title and lion’s share of the HK$8 million (~$1.02M) prize pool in the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau Main Event.

It had taken a lot of poker, played out over five starting legs in four different countries to whittle the 928-strong field to 68 Day 3 survivors when play resumed for at 1pm local time (GMT+8) on Friday, 1 December.

With only 35 players making the hallowed money spots the action was fast and frantic from the get-go and the bust outs began almost as soon as play resumed with Poland’s Karol Janiszewski, Australia’s Bobby Zhang and China’s Yu Dong Yang all falling before the first break.

Of these, it was Yang’s exit that was the most shocking. The Chinese player began the day as chip leader with a monster stack of 987,000 but lost a huge pre-flop coin flip when his pocket eights were out-flopped by the ace-king of Malaysia’s Jun Wah Yap and could not recover.

The field’s other two top stacks coming into Day 3 – Malaysia’s Wai Kiat Lee and Michael Soyza – both made the money but could not make the final eight, with Soyza departing at the hands of the official final table frontrunner Lim Chin Wei and Lee busting to Taiwan’s Chen An Lin in 25th and 18th place respectively.

Other notables to fall by the wayside well short of the money included Korean pro Vivian Im, China’s Guo Dong and Hong Kong’sBen Lai. The man who departed in the most painful position of all and exited on the bubble was Paul Toeh. The Malaysian fell at the hands of Korea’s Je Ho Lee after defending his big blind with king-jack suited and getting all the chips in on a king-high flop.

Unfortunately for Toeh, there were two clubs on the board and Lee was holding ace-jack with the ace of clubs and running cards saw the Korean make the nut flush to guarantee the remaining 35 players an HK$50,900 payday.

It took nine grueling 60-minute levels to thin the field down to the final eight and set up the official 8-handed final table, with Chen An Lin falling at the final hurdle to close out the day after busting at the hands of Hong Kong’s Danny Tang.

The man best positioned to take down the HK$1,925,000 first prize is Malaysia’s Lim Chin Wei who climbed into an early lead, before Je Ho Lee powered into the top spot, where he remained for the majority of the day before an ill-timed bluff against Chien Jenyen two tables out saw Wei re-take the lead.

Both Lee and Jenyen made the final table, as did Day 2B frontrunner Sahashi Hideki and Hong Kong’s Sparrow Cheung – who has cashed an unbelievable 62 times this year and currently holds the top spot for most 2017 cashes worldwide – will be making his 34th final table appearance of the year, with the last eight as follows:

Chen An Lin Eliminated in 9th Place (HK$123,500) to Set-up Official Final Table

Level 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Chen An Lin
Chen An Lin

Taiwan’s Chen An Lin had been nursing his shortstack for quite some time and the other eight players have been circling like sharks who can smell the blood in the water. They knew it was just a matter of time, and Lin’s time at the final table has now come to a close.

When the end came it was sudden, and it was quick. Down to his last 580,000 in chips, An Lin moved all-in from under-the-gun and was looked up by Danny Tang.

Chen An Lin: {8-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Danny Tang: {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

The {3-Spades}{10-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop brought An Lin no help and while he picked up a straight draw on the {j-Clubs} the {k-Hearts} river slammed the door on his hopes and dreams, brought the eight remaining players to the official final table and concluded play for the day.

Jeffrey Lo Eliminated in 10th Place (HK$94,400)

Level 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Jeffrey Lo
Jeffrey Lo

Unfortunately for Jeffery Lo he has become the latest casualty. The Hong Kong player took an unlucky hit at the hands of Eugene Co just seconds before the elimination of Yuefeng Pan.

Lo, holding {a-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, and Co, holding {a-Clubs}{2-Spades} had got all the chips in on a flop of {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and while Lo held the lead and remained in front on the {9-Diamonds} turn, disaster struck on the {2-Hearts} river with Co making a full house. The Filipino climbed to around 2 million after the hand while Lo was left with around 750,000.

After the move to the final table, Lo was one of the shorter stacks and got the last of his chips in pre-flop with {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} and was looked up by Lim Chin Wei with {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{q-Clubs} to bring Lo’s tournament to a close and the final table down to nine. One more bust out and play stops for the day.

Yuefeng Pan Eliminated in 11th Place (HK$94,400) to Set-up Unofficial Final Table

Level 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Yuefeng Pan narrowly missed out on making the unofficial final table
Yuefeng Pan narrowly missed out on making the unofficial final table

The field is now down to ten and the clock has been paused briefly while players relocate to the unofficial final table. But how did that happen? Well, we’re glad you asked.

It was Yuefeng Pan who was the initial aggressor, making it 100,000 to go from late-position and Lim Chin Wei re-raised to 300,000 from the blinds, Pan made the call and the action went heads-up to a {q-}{10-}{x-} flop, which Wei led for 225,000.

Pan jammed for 900,000 and Wei called immediately. Pan turned over {q-}{j-} but was trailing to Wei’s {k-}{k-} and did not improve and departed in 11th place for an HK$94,400 payday. Wei now has 5 million.

Lee Busts Toeh to Burst Bubble

Level 14 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Paul Teoh became the unfortunate bubble boy
Paul Teoh became the unfortunate bubble boy

Je Ho Lee is playing tournament executioner at the moment and it seemed fitting that the man who brought the 36 remaining players up to the bubble was also the man to pop it.

While some of the more deep-stacked players might have wished for the bubble to go on forever, the field’s short stacks can now all breath a big sigh of relief.

It was Lee who was the instigator, making it 50,000 from early position and Malaysia’s Paul Toeh defended from the big blind to take pay heads-up to a flop of {9-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}.

Toeh checked the action over to Lee, who casually tossed out a bet of 55,000 and Teoh re-checked his cards before choosing to check-raise to 130,000 in total. Lee moved all-in as soon as Teoh’s raise was across the line and Toeh called immediately.

There was an excruciating five minute wait for Toeh to discover his fate while the hands played out on the other three tables before, finally it was showtime.

Paul Teoh: {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Je Ho Lee: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

Toeh was the at-risk player but had hit top pair so just needed to fade an ace, or so he thought. The turn was a very sweaty {q-Clubs} and you just knew what was going to happen next. The {2-Clubs} river completed the Korean’s backdoor flush and guarantee the 35 remaining players an HK$50,900 payday and Lee stacked up to 2.55 million while the unlucky Toeh headed for the rail empty-handed.

Wei Doubles Luo But Still Holds Lead

Level 11 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Lim Chin Wei currently has all the chips
Lim Chin Wei currently has all the chips

Malaysia’s Lim Chin Wei is the man who has come in with the run good today it would appear and has made even more chips since busting the unfortunate Karol Janiszewski earlier. We caught Wei doubling up Xixiang Luo, but he had so many chips that he still held the lead after the dust settled on the hand.

It was Wei who was the man to open the action with an under-the-gun raise and Luo had pulled the trigger from the cutoff and moved all-in for a little over 200,000. With chips to spare Wei made a quick call and the hands were turned over.

Lim Chin Wei: {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Xixiang Luo: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

Luo had the best hand and the {4-Clubs}{5-Spades}{3-Spades}{a-Clubs}{4-Clubs} runout was a kind one and he stacked up to 420,000 and while Wei took a hit he still held a massive 1,200,000 in chips.

Yap Takes a Bite out of Yang

Level 11 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Jun Wah Yap
Jun Wah Yap

We struggled to catch much of Yu Dong Yang in action yesterday as no-one wanted to tangle with the big stack. That is not the case today though we caught a big pot that played out between Yang and fellow tablemate Jun Wah Yap.

Yang has not been running as well today as yesterday and his massive 987,000 starting stack had shrunk to a little under 600,000 before the following hand took place.

It was Yang who was the man to kick start the action with a raise to 21,000 from under-the-gun and the action folded around to Yap in the small blind. The Malaysian player wanted to play for more and popped it up to 76,000 and the action was back on Yang.

The Chinese player wasted no time and quickly announced he was all-in and Yap did not look happy. However, he also did not look like he wanted to fold. Eventually, Yap shrugged and said the magic words ‘I call…’ and the cards were turned over.

Jun Wah Yap: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Yu Dong Yang: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

Both players were calling for their respective cards and it looked like Yap, who was the player at-risk, wanted it more and the first card off the top of the deck was the {a-Clubs} followed by {8-Hearts}{q-Spades} with the rest of the board running out {j-Hearts} and {a-Spades} to give Yap trips and the pot. Yap climbed to 713,000 while Yang’s once mighty stack was left much reduced and he dropped to 215,000.

Yu Dong Yang Leads Going into Day 3 of the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau

The Suncity Cup Macau Main Event trophy is what's at stake, as well as the HK$8M first prize
The Suncity Cup Macau Main Event trophy is what's at stake, as well as the HK$8M first prize

Welcome back poker fans to the PokerNews live coverage of the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau, brought to you from the Poker King poker room at the Venetian Macau.

The last of the Day 2 flights has concluded and the entry period is over so now we get to the business end of the tournament. It has taken two months, five starting legs in Jeju, Korea (24-30 Sept), Manila (13-16 Oct), Taipei (3-5 Nov), Incheon, Korea (10-12 Nov) and Macau (23 Nov - 1 Dec) and a whole lot of poker to get this far.

The 928 Suncity Cup entrants have now been whittled down, with the 32 Day 2A survivors united with the 36 Day 2B survivors for the first time and Day 3 will see the 68 returning players attempt to reach the final table, which the tournament will be playing down to today.

The last 68 are battling it out for a share of the HK$8,008,300 prize pool and the coveted title and trophy. While the tournament has already paid out HK$744,000 in cash to all the Day 2 qualifiers who made it through the respective Day 1's, some of the players chose to buy-in directly on the two respective Day 2’s for HK$38,000 so have not yet made any money at all. In fact, several of these players played Day 2A and Day 2B in addition to multiple HK$6,600 Day 1 starting flights so still have their work cut out for them if they want to see a return on their investment.

With the top 35 places paying out, 33 players will be leaving empty handed with those who make the money all guaranteed a payday of HK$50,900. However, it is the HK$1,925,000 first prize that all will be gunning for.

The man best positioned to take that down is Yu Dong Yang who bagged up a massive 987,000 in chips after dominating much of the Day 2B action. The Chinese player has more than 140,000 than next closest rival, Day 2A chip leader Malaysia’s Wai Kiat Lee, who is coming in with a stack of 840,000, closely followed by fellow countryman Michael Soyza (834,000).

However, there is a great deal of talent left in the field with Mexico’sJC Alvarado (510,000), Hong Kong’s Sparrow Chung (387,000) andBen Lai (377,000) and Korea’s Vivian Im (201,000) just a few of the notables still in contention.

Blinds will be starting at 4,000/8,000 with a 1,000 running ante and the day will be broken up into 60-minute levels with a dinner break scheduled for the end of level 15 at around 7:30pm local time (GMT+8) and play will not stop until the final table is reached.
