Chan Ousts Cheng to Seize Early Lead

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Peter Chan
Peter Chan

Yue Peng Cheng has become the first official high rolling casualty, falling at the hands of Hong Kong's Peter Chan, who has edged into an early lead.

The hand was an interesting multi-way affair, at least at first, with Chan opening the action to 800 from the hijack and picking up three callers, with Yue Peng Cheng (cutoff), Mingqin Liu (button) and Yuan Li (big blind) all coming along for the ride to take the action four-way to a flop of {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{7-Hearts}.

After Li checked from the big blind Chan was not deterred with all those customers and led for 1,300. Cheng and Liu both made the call before Li popped it up to 4,800 with a check-raise. Chan showed a great deal of strength and raised once more, making it 11,000 to go in total and Yue Peng Cheng then decided to move all-in for 19,500 in total.

The rest of the table seemed a little taken aback at all the action and all bowed out, with the exception of Chan, who made the call to put Cheng at risk.

Peter Chan: {a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Yue Peng Cheng: {j-Spades}{10-Spades}

Cheng was the man whose tournament life was on the line, and his jack-high open-ended straight draw was trailing to Chan's ace-high gutshot draw. The {q-Spades} changed nothing and the {7-Spades} river completed the hand, and Cheng's first buy-in in this tournament as the Chinese player became the first official casualty, which Chan stacked up to 101,000 to take the chip lead.
