Day 1 of the 2018 Poker King Cup Macau HK$80,000 High Roller is in the books after nine levels of play. In total, 54 entries were collected over the day and 36 of them managed to find a bag to tag at the end. Taking the overnight chip lead is Duan Chao from China with 181,500 in chips.

Chao has just over $90,000 in recorded lifetime tournament winnings and will be looking to add a chunk to that tomorrow, right here at the Venetian Macau Resort & Hotel. But it won’t be easy. There are still some more players in contention for that title and trophy tomorrow. Trailing in second place in the chip counts is Mingqin Liu with 160,300. And closing the podium for today is another Chinese player, Xiaqing Ji with 137,600 in chips.

Some other notable names in the running include Ziang Zhu (106,000), Sergio Aido (95,200), Tony Chang (94,900), Peter Chan (80,400), and Ye Wang (77,700), and all have bagged an above average stack to start Day 2 with. Players like Aaron Lim (52,500), Mark Hammond (37,000), Phachara Wongwichit (26,900), and Preston Lee (14,900) have got some work to do with their stacks.

Defending champion Chung Yuan Yu had to use two bullets to make it through to Day 2 and takes 40,700 with him. 2017 Runner-up Phanlert Sukonthachartnant managed to double up in the last hand of the day and scraped through with 28,800 in the end.

Play will continue tomorrow, Friday 21 September, at 2pm local time with Level 10, featuring a small blind of 800, big blind of 1,600 and running ante of 200. The late registration and reentry period will still be open then and remain open until the start of Level 13 which should be around 3.10pm local time. Blinds will continue to be 40-minutes each and a 10-minute break should take place after every 3 levels. There is no dinner break scheduled but could be planned in at the tournament director’s discretion.

Make sure to come back to see who will be crowned the PKC High Roller Champion tomorrow as the PokerNews live reporting team will be there from start till end.

Kong Busts Perrins at the Close

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

With the clock ticking down Matt Perrins decided to try and get something going in an attempt to return for Day 2 with a decent-sized stack. Unfortunately for the Brit his all-in pre-flop late position shove of close to 30,000 was called by China's Xinyong Kong from the blinds and the cards were revealed.

Matt Perrins: {9-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}
Xinyong Kong: {a-Diamonds}{5-Spades}

Perrins flashed Kong a cheeky grin after he was caught with his hand in the cookie jar and the {7-Hearts}{10-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} runout provided no help. Perrins hit the rail before the conclusion of play while Kong stacked up to 112,000.

Sukonthachartnant Doubles Through Xu

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

Liang Xu raised to 3,000 from the hijack and Phanlert Sukonthachartnant shoved for 12,500 in total. Action folded back to Xu who hesitated for a while, counted out his stack and then called.

Phanlert Sukonthachartnant: {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}
Liang Xu: {K-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}

The board ran out {2-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{K-Spades}{4-Spades} to give them both two pair but with Sukonthachartnant having the higher ones to double up.

Last Five Hands

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

The tournament clock has been stopped and the tournament director has announced that five more hands need to be played before they can all bag and tag their chips for Day 2 tomorrow.

Zhou Tanks and Folds

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

The board read {a-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{8-Spades}{5-Clubs} with 19,600 in the middle already. Xiaqing Ji checked his big blind and Quan Zhou bet 24,500. Ji responded with a raise to 68,500 which sent Zhou into the tank. Zhou covered his eyes with a hand as the winner of this hand would take the chip lead probably. After a while, Zhou reluctantly folded.
