Wai King Cheung Enters 2019 Poker King Cup Taiwan Main Event Final Table As Chip Leader

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Wai King Cheung

Day 3 of the Poker King Cup Main Event has now come to a close, with the official final table of nine reached in just over five 60-minute levels.

In what proved to be an extremely action-packed day at the tables, the 32-strong field was whittled down at a brisk pace to the final nine contenders.

The man in pole position for the honor of becoming the first to claim the title of inaugural Poker King Cup Taiwan Main Event Champion is Hong Kong's Wai King Cheung, who sits atop the counts with a mighty 2,135,000 stack.

Cheung returned for Day 3 third in the counts, and played a solid game throughout, seemingly content to let the other players gamble and remained amongst the top five stacks as the play progressed. It was not until the unofficial 10-handed final table was set that Cheung made his play for the top spot.

Cheung's move came late in the day in a gigantic hand against South Korea's Jae Wook Shin and the Philippines David Erquiaga; with blinds at 12,000/24,000 with a 24,000 big blind ante, Shin opened the action from under-the-gun with a min-raise and Cheung called from one seat over before an active Erquiaga three-bet to 200,000 from the cutoff.

Both Shin and Cheung called to swell the pot to a sizable 636,000 with all three players checking the ten-high two diamond flop. Cheung was the man to take the initiative on the four of spades turn, with Erquiaga the only caller, swelling the pot to over 1 million.

The Hong Kong player fired a second barrel of 300,000 on the queen of hearts river, and though he looked sorely tempted, Erquiaga eventually gave it up, leaving Cheung to climb into the lead without showdown, leapfrogging both Shin and Day 2 chip leader Chou Chien Fa to take the top spot.

Jae Wook Shin

Shin also enjoyed a great day at the tables and was by far the most active player, sending several protagonists to the rail as play progressed, including Terry Fan (12th for TWD 119,500/$3,810), and Henry Hou (13th for TWD 98,000/$3,125) to enjoy a stint as chip leader for a spell himself before Fa reclaimed his crown coming into the unofficial final table of ten. Shin will be returning second in the counts with a stack of 1,648,000, with Fa (1,234,000) rounding out the top three.

All the other returning finalists are sitting on less than a million, with the official final table turning out to be an international affair with seven different countries represented with the nine remaining finalists stacking up as follows:

Day 3 began with 32 eager hopefuls all returning with one goal in mind—making the final table. Notables to fall by the wayside as play progressed included Hong Kong's Howard Ka Ho Sun (15th for TWD 98,000/$3,125), Canada's Mike Huang (18th for TWD 83,900/$2,675), Hong Kong's Wing Kei Chan (20th for TWD 73,500/$2,345), Day 1A frontrunner Edwin Gerard (27th for TWD 57,900/$1,845) Singapore's Richard Lim (30th for TWD 50,500/$1,610), and Taiwanese poker professional Chen An Lin (31st for TWD 50,500/$1,610).

Hong Kong's Ping Cheong Fung came within touching distance of making the unofficial final table, getting his chips in ahead with pocket eights against the pocket sevens of Yu You Ci Tsai, only for the later to turn and set and river quads to send Fung out in 11th place for TWD 119,500/$3,810.

Hong Kong's Dicky Tsang managed to earn himself a seat at the unofficial ten-handed final table. Unfortunately for Tsang, he came up just short of making the fourth and final day after moving all-in preflop from under-the-gun with king-queen only to run into big blind Tsai's ace-king to conclude the action for the day. Tsang departed in 10th place with TWD 119,500/$3,810 for his deep run.

The final will play out at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20 with 48:12 remaining on level 24 with blinds at 12,000/24,000 with a 24,000 big blind ante and will play down to a champion. Join us then as we see who earns the right to call themselves the inaugural Poker King Cup Taiwan Main Event Champion and claim the TWD 1,639,000 (~$52,300) top prize.

Dicky Tsang Eliminated in 10th Place For TWD 119,500 ($3,810)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Dicky Tsang

There was a great deal of pushing and shoving and quite a few three-bet preflop pots that didn't see any flops dealt before a sudden burst of action saw Hong Kong's Dicky Tsang exit the tournament area.

Tsang was one of the shorter stacks and moved all-in from under-the-gun for 390,000 and action folded around to big blind Yu You Ci Tsai, who tanked for a good few minutes before stating "ok, let's gamble," and slapped down the calling chips.

Yu You Ci Tsai: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Dicky Tsang: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

Tsai's gamble saw him dominate Tsang's hand, and the Hong Kong player totally missed the {5-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{4-Spades} runout, departing in 10th place for TWD 119,500 ($3,810) to set up the official nine-handed final table.

The clock has been paused with 48:12 remaining on level 24 with play resuming on Tuesday, August 20 at 1:00 p.m. local time (GMT+8), and all that action concludes the Day 3 play. Full end of day chip counts and wrap to follow.

Cheung Takes the Lead

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Wai King Cheung
Wai King Cheung

A huge hand played out not long after the unofficial final table restarted that saw Hong Kong's Wai King Cheung climb to the top of the chip counts.

It was Jae Wook Shin who instigated the action with an under-the-gun open to 48,000, with Cheung calling from one seat over before David Erquiaga three-bet to 200,000 from the cutoff. Both Shin and Cheung called to swell the pot to 636,000 and action went three-way to a flop of {7-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

All three players seemed a little gun-shy, and it was checked all around, with the dealer burning and turning the {4-Spades}. After Shin checked for a second time, Cheung cut out two stacks of the recently introduced red 25k chips for a bet of 200,000. With the action on Erquiaga, the Filipino hit the think tank, where he remained for several minutes before sliding in the call, with Shin mucking quickly to take the action heads-up.

The {q-Hearts} river saw Cheung fire a second barrel, this time for 300,000 and Erquiaga made another lengthy visit to the think tank, before eventually electing to give it up, leaving Cheung to scoop the massive pot without a showdown. That sizable windfall means Cheung has edged into the chip lead for this first time this tournament, and he is now sitting on a stack of over 2 million in chips. Erquiaga dropped to around 850,000 or so after the hand.

Ping Cheong Fung Eliminated in 11th Place For TWD 119,500 ($3,810)

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Ping Cheong Fung

The fast pace of eliminations continued with Ping Cheong Fung departing not long after Fan's exit. The Hong Kong player got the last of his chips in good, his {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} leading Yu You Ci Tsai's {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}.

The {3-Hearts}{2-Spades}{k-Diamonds} flop kept Fung's nose in front, but disaster stuck on the {7-Hearts} turn with Tsai making a set. Just to rub salt into the wound, this improved to quads on the {7-Diamonds} river to appreciative 'ooohs' and 'ahhhhs' from the rest of the table. Fung saw the funny side and chuckled his way over to the payout desk to collect the TWD 119,500 ($3,810) on offer for 11th while Tsai stacked up to 611,000.

Play has been paused for the redraw for the unofficial final table of ten, meaning Day 3 of the Poker King Cup Taiwan Main Event is just one bust out away from the conclusion of play.

Flush with chips, Jae Wook Shin opened the action with an under-the-gun raise to 40,000 and Terry Fan moved all-in for around 220,000 (11 big blinds), with Shin making the call.

Jae Wook Shin: {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Terry Fan: {a-}{k-}

Fan maintained his lead on the {2-}{2-}{5-} flop, though the {4-Hearts} turn gave Shin some backdoor flush outs. The {6-} river was not a heart, but it gave Shin a pair and a disgruntled looking Fan headed to the rail in 12th place for a TWD 119,500 ($3,810) payday.

Henry Hou Eliminated in 13th Place for TWD 98,000 ($3,125)

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Henry Hou
Henry Hou

Henry Hou's tournament has come to an end, with Jae Wook Shin the man to show him the door, though David Erquiaga tried to get him first.

In the first hand, it was Shin the man driving the action with a raise to 40,000 on the button with Hou (small blind) and Erquiaga (big blind) both making the call to take action three-way to a flop of {3-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

Erquiaga led for 40,000 after Hou checked, and Shin responded with a re-raise to 120,000. After Hou got out of the way, Erquiaga flashed the table ace-ten.

"I was hoping to bust you," Erquiaga said to Hou pitching his cards into the muck and leaving Shin to scoop the pot.

Hou was out the next hand. It was Taiwan's Kuang Hung Lee the man to kick things off with a preflop open to 45,000 from the hijack, with Shin making the call from the cutoff and Hou calling all-in for his tournament life from the button. Lee Kuan Lee elected to come along as well to take the action four-way to a flop of {9-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{j-Spades}.

Wee checked, as did Lee, and Shin decided to isolate with a bet of 125,000, which did the trick with the other two live players in the hand both folding, with Hou and Shin revealing their cards.

Jae Wook Shin: {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}
Henry Hou: {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

While Hou had started off with the best hand preflop, he was drawing extremely thin postflop against Shin's flopped set. The {q-Hearts} turn and {a-Clubs} river sealed Hou's fate, and he departed in 13th place for a TWD 98,000 ($3,125), while Shin stacked up to 1.65 million

Sheng-Chien Cheng Eliminated in 16th Place, Howard Sun Eliminated in 15th Place, Both for TWD 98,000 ($3,125)

There have been two quick back-to-back eliminations, with Sheng-Chien Cheng busting to Ling He, and then Howard Sun falling at the hands of the UK's Alex Lindop immediately afterward.

We did not catch the action in the Cheng bust out but arrived in time to see Lindop and Sun battle it out in the blinds. Lindop limped the small blind and Sun shoved from the big, with the Brit calling to put Sun at risk.

Alex Lindop: {q-Spades}{5-Spades}
Howard Sun: {q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

While Sun had the better queen, Lindop picked up a flush draw on the {2-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{j-Spades} flop, and got there on the {4-Spades} turn, leaving Sun drawing dead. The {5-Hearts} river was merely a formality and the field is now down to 14 players.

The two table redraw did not work out for Chi Hang, who busted immediately to David Erquiaga. Hang moved all-in preflop for his last 170,000 with {q-Hearts}{5-Hearts} from the button, with Erguiaga making the call from the blinds with {a-Clubs}{7-Spades}.

The board ran out {4-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} and Hang hit the rail, while Erquiaga stacked up to 990,000.

Play has been paused for a redraw following two quick eliminations. The first saw the short-stacked Cliff Chou move all-in from the button with {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and get looked up by Jae Wook Shin with {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}.

The {q-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{q-Spades} flop was not a good one for Chou's pocket sevens, and the {2-Clubs} turn and {5-Clubs} river would be the last board he would see in the Main Event, departing in 19th place for TWD 73,500 while Shin stacked up to just over 1 million in chips.

Chou would not get lonely on the rail and was joined by Michael Huang almost immediately afterward following a clash of two premium hands against Chou Chien Fa.

All the chips went in preflop, with Fa opening the action with a raise, Huang three-betting, Fa four-betting and Huang five-bet shoving and getting called instantly.

Michael Huang: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Chou Chien Fa: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}

The board ran out {3-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{j-Spades} and the field is now down to 17 players, who are being reshuffled over two tables.
