Steffen Sontheimer, who celebrated a birthday a few days ago, was one of only two players to make back-to-back final tables in the first two events of the inaugural Poker Masters. He collected $204,000 for finishing fourth in Event #1, and he bettered that in a big way by topping a field of 50 entries to win Event #2: $50,000 NLHE for $900,000.

That puts him in the lead for Poker Masters earnings with $1.104 million. If you recall, the player with the best results (highest total earnings) throughout all five Poker Masters tournaments (four $50,000 buy-in tournaments capped by a $100,000 freeze out finale) will win The Poker Masters Purple Jacket™.

Meanwhile, Event #1 champ Nick Schulman sits second with $918,000, while Matt Hyman ($561,000) and Fedor Holz ($550,000) sit in third and fourth respectively.

Prior to the win, Sontheimer had $3,755,390 in career tournament earnings, his best ever being $1,223,264 for finishing runner-up in the $100,000 ARIA Super High Roller 19 back in May. Amazingly, more than half of his lifetime cashes have come in High Roller events.

Bryn Kenney came into Day 2 as the short stack, and it didn’t take long for him to shove with pocket sixes. Sontheimer called with ace-seven out of the big blind, and an ace on the flop sent Kenney to the rail in seventh place for $125,000.

Not long after, a similar hand unfolded when Adrian Mateos got his stack all in with pocket sevens against the ace-queen of Sontheimer. Once again, an ace appeared on the flop and Mateos hit the rail. The Spaniard had made back-to-back final tables after finishing in seventh in Event #1 for $127,500. With the $150K he received for placing sixth in Event #2, Mateos now has $277,500 in Poker Masters earnings thus far.

After coming back from the first break of the day, the two big stacks collided as Christian Christner, who sat second in chips, got it in holding jacks against the Big Slick of chip leader Fedor Holz. The story remained the same as an ace hit the flop, and Holz ended up with half the chips in play while Christner was out in fifth place for $175,000.

A short-stacked Phil Hellmuth was the next to go after his ace-ten failed to get there against Tom Marchese’s pocket sixes, and then Marchese followed him out the door after a bad beat by Holz. It happened when Marchese got his stack all in with ace-jack suited against the ace-ten suited of Holz. The flop came down all clubs which just so happened to match up with Holz’s hand.

Holz took a stack of 5.444 million into heads-up play against Sontheimer, who had just 810,000. It seemed like a foregone conclusion, but Sontheimer soon managed to double through Holz with quad sixes, slow rolling his good friend in the process. Before long he took over the chip lead, and he never gave it back as he slowly whittled away at his fellow countryman.

With the win, Sontheimer moved up a spot from 17th to 16th on the all-time money list, leapfrogging Benny Spindler in the process. Another final table at the Poker Masters would also likely result in him passing the likes of Niklas Heinecker and Manig Loeser.

The second event of the Poker Masters has come to an end, but already Event #3: $50,000 NLHE is underway. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team is providing complete coverage from that tournament, which you can follow by clicking here.

Fedor Holz Eliminated in 2nd Place ($550,000)

Fedor Holz - 2nd Place
Fedor Holz - 2nd Place

In what would be the final hand of the tournament, Fedor Holz raised to 155,000 and called off for 1.97 million after Steffen Sontheimer had moved all in.

Sontheimer: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
Holz: {k-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

Holz had a kicker problem, and it didn't get resolved as the board ran out a lowly {7-Clubs}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Clubs}.

Tom Marchese Eliminated in 3rd Place ($300,000)

Level 23 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Tom Marchese - 3rd Place
Tom Marchese - 3rd Place

There's no denying that Fedor Holz is playing great and running better here in Event #2, which was evidenced by a hand he just played against Tom Marchese.

It began with Holz raising to 165,000 from the small blind with the {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} only to have Marchese three-bet all in for 1.5 million with the {a-Spades}{j-Spades}. Holz hit the tank, using a time extension in the process, and eventually dropped in a call.

Holz was way behind, but that all changed when the flop came down {7-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{9-Clubs} to give him the nuts. Marchese needed to go runner-runner full house in order to win, but the {6-Spades} turn took away any chance of that happening.

The meaningless {3-Diamonds} was run out on the river and Marchese hit the rail in third place for $300K.

Phil Hellmuth Eliminated in 4th Place ($200,000)

A short-stacked Phil Hellmuth moved all in under the gun for 495,000 and Tom Marchese isolated by three-betting all in over the top from the small blind.

Hellmuth: {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Marchese: {6-Spades}{6-Clubs}

In all three of the elimination hands thus far an ace has spiked on the river, but the opposite happened here as the {j-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop gave Marchese a set. Hellmuth needed running straight cards, but the {9-Hearts} turn took away any chance of that happening.

The {9-Diamonds} river made Hellmuth's elimination official, and he headed to the exit. He also stated he may go take a nap before jumping into Event #3.

Christian Christner Eliminated in 5th Place ($175,000)

Level 22 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Christian Christner - 5th Place
Christian Christner - 5th Place

Christian Christner, who began the day as the chip leader, raised to 85,000 under the gun and Fedor Holz three-bet to 235,000 from the cutoff. Action folded back to Christner and he moved all in. Holz snap-called. It was a big pot as the player second in chips got it in against the chip leader.

Holz: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Christner: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}

It was a flip, but not after the {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Clubs} flop paired Holz. The {2-Diamonds} turn left Christner looking for a jack on the river, but it wasn't in the cards as the {5-Diamonds} bricked instead.

"I Have the Best No-Limit Hold'em ROI in History"

Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth raised the cutoff to 85,000 with the {q-Hearts}{j-Spades} and Fedor Holz called from the small blind. Tom Marchese came along from the big with the {2-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and the trio saw a flop of {6-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}, which they all checked.

Holz then checked for a second time on the {4-Diamonds} turn, Marchese bet 165,000, and Hellmuth quickly called. Holz folded and it was heads-up action to the {8-Hearts} river.

Marchese missed but bet 400,000 nonetheless. Hellmuth gave it a little thought and then folded the winner, which prompted Marchese to reveal the bluff.

"WTF are they doing?" Hellmuth asked as he shot up out of his chair. "Wow. Defend with deuce-f***ing-three. I wish I could play with you guys everyday."

"We wish the same," Holz quipped.

"Really, Fedor? I have the best no-limit hold'em ROI in history," Hellmuth shot back before giving Marchese credit for the river bluff.

Adrian Mateos Eliminated in 6th Place ($150,000)

Level 19 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Adrian Mateos - 6th Place
Adrian Mateos - 6th Place

Adrian Mateos, one of two players to make back-to-back final tables here in the Poker Masters, was just eliminated in sixth place, one spot better than he finished yesterday.

It happened when Steffen Sontheimer raised to 70,000 holding the {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} and then called Mateos' three-bet shove for 740,000. Mateos got it in good with the {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}, but he fell behind on the {8-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} flop.

Neither the {j-Hearts} turn nor {9-Hearts} river helped Mateos, and he was ousted in sixth place for $150,000. Along with the $127,500 he won yesterday, he now has $277,500 in Poker Masters earnings thus far.

It was a flip, but not after the flop came down {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{a-Diamonds} to pair Sontheimer. The {j-Hearts} turn gave Kenney chop outs to a ten, but the {5-Spades} river was a brick.
