Defending Champion Timur Caglan Among Big Stacks After Day 1b

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Timur Caglan third in chips after Day 1b
Timur Caglan third in chips after Day 1b

Day 1b of the 2017 PokerNews Cup €250 Main Event at the King's Casino in Rozvadov is done and dusted. The second flight drew a total of 106 entries including re-entries, bringing up the total number of entries to 193 thus far.

Only 18 players bagged up chips for Day 2 and Lithuania's Paulius Katinas stormed to the top of the leader board in the last two levels of the night, eventually claiming 546,000. He is followed by Bariskaan Cinitas (475,000) and defending PokerNews Cup Rozvadov champion Timur Caglan (354,500). Other big stacks and notables among the Day 1b survivors include Marek Blasko (325,500), Roman Tvrzník (146,000) and Paulina Rimkute (108,500).

Among those to take a shot at the guaranteed prize pool of €200,000 and fail to advance were 2016 runner-up Ronny Voth, 2017 World Series of Poker bracelet winner Sebastian Langrock, Timothy Weltner, Mike Hansen, Petr Targa and Karol Radomski.

At the conclusion of Day 1B, defending champion Timur Caglan said that he was feeling good. “For sure I want to win again!” he said, “I got very lucky today. I had many suck outs! There were playable not hands, not the biggest of hands, but playable hands. And every time I got lucky!”

We asked him what his plans were for the next few days before the tournament resumes on Sunday.

“Just relax,” he said, “I think I won’t play tomorrow!”

Johan Groot was among the victims of Caglan's hot run when the Dutchman called a blind-on-blind four-bet shove with pocket jacks and ended up second-best to Caglan's king-ten suited when a king appeared on the turn. Paul van Alst took a stand with pocket jacks as well, but Caglan had flopped two pair with king-queen and claimed his chips, too.

Heading into the last two levels of the night, Paulius Katinas was among the shorter stacks, but a big double against Michal Riczak saw the Lithuanian rise. Katinas called a raise and subsequent three-bet by Riczak with ace-ten and flopped top pair. Riczak check-raised an ace on the turn with just pocket kings and Katinas doubled with trips aces. In the last hand of the night, Katinas even sent Riczak to the rail after holding up with jacks versus ace-jack suited.

Paulius Katinas leads after Day 1b

So far, 33 players ensured their seat for Day 2 and all those that failed can enter again on Day 1c and Day 1d. As usual two re-entries are allowed for each starting day and, in case any player bags up more than once, the best stack will be brought forward.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back on the tournament floor of Europe's biggest poker arena when Day 1c kicks off at 1 p.m. local time on Saturday August 19th 2017, and the fourth and final heat starts at 5 p.m. local time.

Blanc Scores Fortuitous Double Through Votkin

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Remi Blanc
Remi Blanc

It folded to Remi Blanc on the button who raised to 7,000. Asmo Votkin was in the small blind and he three-bet to 165,00. The big blind folded and action was back on Blanc. He four-bet all in for 82,500.

Votkin snap-called and showed {a-Clubs}{k-Spades} while Blanc sheepishly turned over {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}.

However, there was a ten in the window of a {3-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop, and there was to be no jack or ace for Votkin as the turn {6-Spades} and river {2-Diamonds} were dealt.

Paul van Alst
Paul van Alst

Timur Caglan raised to 7,000 from the cutoff and Paul van Alst three-bet to 18,000 from the button. Caglan called.

The flop came {q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} and Caglan checked to Van Alst who bet 24,000. Caglan raised all in and after some consideration, Van Alst muttered the call.

Caglan: {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Van Alst: {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

The turn was the {2-Diamonds} giving Van Alst a flush draw, but the river was the {9-Spades} meaning he was eliminated and Caglan's stack took a big surge.

Voutilainen Doubles Through Barzdzius

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Rokas Barzdzius
Rokas Barzdzius

Petteri Voutilainen open-shoved for his last 27,200 from the hijack. Rokas Barzdzius was in the cutoff and he also moved all in for 35,000. The remaining players all folded and the cards were turned over.

Voutilainen: {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}
Barzdzius: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}

Barzdzius was shaking his head on the flop after it came {7-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} giving his opponent a set. Even though he paired his king on the {k-Hearts} turn, he was drawing dead. The river was the {j-Hearts} and he was left with fumes.

Lux and Hansen Bust

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Marek Lux
Marek Lux

"I sucked out on him, I sucked out like four or five times today," Timur Caglan said. The 2016 PokerNews Cup Rozvadov champion referred to a showdown against former chip leader Marek Lux and just added that he had the worse kicker but improved to two pair.

Mike Hansen has also been eliminated. The Dane shoved a flop of {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Spades} with {K-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and Michal Riczak called with {J-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. The {A-Clubs} turn and {5-Diamonds} river were both blanks and Hansen was gone.

Last but not least, Lazer Gjergji was all in for 47,400 on the {6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop and showed {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}. Marek Blasko had flopped a set of sixes, but the {10-Hearts} turn and {8-Diamonds} river gave Gjergji the better hand. "Well played," Blasko added with a dry smile on the face.

Seven-Deuce Never Lose for Defending Champion Timur Caglan

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Timur Caglan
Timur Caglan

A player in middle position raised to 2,400 and Petteri Voutilainen called on the button. Timur Caglan, who won this event last year, defended his big blind and the three players saw a flop.

The flop came {9-Spades}{2-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and all three players checked. The turn was the {2-Diamonds}. Caglan bet 3,500 and the initial raiser folded. Voutilainen called.

The river was the {10-Clubs} and Caglan bet 6,500 and his opponent called.

Caglan showed {7-Clubs}{2-Hearts} for a full house and Voutilainen let a wry smile play on his lips before mucking.

Lux Extends Lead

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Christopher Bock
Christopher Bock

The stack of Christopher Bock vanished when he had an unfortunate timing to improve to a straight with {9-}{8-} on a board of {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. The te-high straight was no good, as big stack Marek Lux turned over {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} for the nut straight and that sent Bock to the rail.

Right after, Lux won another bigger pot with {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} for top pair and Marketa Veisova lost the remainder of her short stack on a different table.

Willem de Jong
Willem de Jong

Edgaras Pipine and Karol Radomski were eliminated in quick succession and Maciej Kondraszuk sent his stack over to Marek Blasko.

Then, a three-way flop of {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} emerged and a player bet 3,300. Willem de Jong moved all in for 13,225 from the cutoff and Manfred Komling called on the button. Roman Tvrzník reraised all in and forced folds from all opponents.

Willem de Jong: {K-Diamonds}{J-Spades}
Roman Tvrzník: {10-Spades}{9-Hearts}

"Queen on the river!" the Dutchman demanded, but both the {A-Diamonds} turn and {A-Hearts} river were blanks to send de Jong to the rail as well.

Hansen Busts Taller

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Mike Hansen with a Straight Flush
Mike Hansen with a Straight Flush

Mike Hansen dominated his table and saw the departure of Ema Brazauskaite, while the Dane then took care of Vadim Taller. With plenty of chips already in the pot, 25,000 to be exact, and the flop showing {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}, Hansen bet 8,500. Taller moved all in for little more and Martin Greizinger folded.

"I call," Hansen said and quickly announced the nut straight, tabling {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}. Taller had {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and had some chop outs, before picking up further outs with the {8-Spades} turn. However, the {7-Hearts} on the river improved Hansen to a straight flush and he dispatched his opponent in style.

Sarunas Linkius has also been eliminated on a different table.

Irakli Kemularia Wins Dramatic Three-way All-in

Level 4 : 150/300, 50 ante
Irakli Kemularia
Irakli Kemularia

Irakli Kemularia limped from under the gun. In the next position Rytas Staniukynas raised to 800 and in the next position after that Timo Rauschenbach three-bet to 2,200.

The player on the button, as well as the players in the small and big blind both called, before Kemularia moved all in for 31,300. Staniukynas moved all in for 45,000 and Rauschenbach moved all in for around 20,000. The remaining three players folded and the cards were turned over.

Kemularia: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Staniukynas: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Rauschenbach: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

"One time," said Rauschenbach, but it was Kemularia who was looking the most excited after the flop came {10-Clubs}{8-Spades}{9-Diamonds} meaning he was open ended.

The turn was the {7-Diamonds} giving Kemularia the straight and leaving Rauschenbach drawing dead. Staniukynas could hit a jack to steal the pot away from Kemularia, but the river was the {8-Diamonds} meaning Kemularia more than doubled up, eliminating Rauschenbach in the process.
