PokerNews Cup Golden Nugget

Day 1b of Golden Nugget Grand Poker Series Event #55: 2022 PokerNews Cup $1,100 will get underway at 11 a.m. local time on what will be the second of three starting days in this $1 Million Guarantee event.

Day 1a collected 181 entries and ended with 23 players remaining with Shea Quintin and Daniel Hinh bagging the two biggest stacks. Day 1b is expected to be substantially larger in terms of number of entries as several Golden Nugget cash game qualifiers will be taking their seats today.

The $1 Million guarantee will be made up of $1,100 entries. Each entry will garner a stack of 30,000. Reentry is unlimited and will be open for all of today and tomorrow on Day 1. Even if a player bags they may opt to enter another flight and move the best bag forward, if they happen to bag twice. Levels are 40 minutes and registration will be open until the start of Level 13 on each of the three starting days, meaning a max late registration will be about 8:45 p.m. local time on Sunday, June 26.

The day will play down until 12.5% of the field is remaining. At that point, the players will bag and be officially in the money as they head to Day 2, which will be at 12 noon on Monday, June 27. There are 15-minute breaks after Level 3, Level 6, and Level 12, a 60-minute dinner break after Level 9, and a 10-minute break after Level 15 in the late night.

PokerNews will be there to report the action all day long today!

"Two Pair Good!" For Obi

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Chike Obi
Chike Obi

Action was picked up on the flop of {7-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts} with three players in the hand. The big blind bet 2,500, a player in early position called and Chike Obi jammed all in for 23,500 from the small blind. Both players ended up calling after some thought.

Obi held the {j-Hearts}{9-Spades} and was behind the {q-Clubs}{q-Spades} of the big blind, while the third player had {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. The turn changed everything as the {j-Diamonds} came off.

"Two-pair good baby!" said Obi as he stood up and the {3-Clubs} came on the river and he repeated it again, adding "Yes!" and pumped his fist as he collected the substantial pot and the player in early position was busted while the big blind was wounded.

Lerner Gathers With Set; Tells Tale of Earlier Hand

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Michael Lerner
Michael Lerner

Action was on the turn as the player on the button bet 15,000. Michael Lerner jammed all in from the cutoff and was called.

Lerner had the {8-Spades}{8-Clubs} against the {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}. The river was the {k-Hearts} and Lerner gathered in a nice double up.

Tablemate David Luong, who had the big stack at the table told the tale of an earlier hand in the day that Lerner was involved in.

An early position player raised to 1,100 when the blinds were at 300/500. Luong called in middle position. The button raised to 6,000. Lerner was in the small blind and was intending to fold, starting to slide his cards forward but while switching the chips for the small blind and he accidentally tossed in three 5,000 chips and the dealer announced a raise to 15,000. The first two players folded and the button jammed for just over 20,000 which Lerner was forced to call for the small amount more.

Lerner had the {q-}{2-} off suit vs the {k-}{k-}, but the board would do the kings dirty as it ran out {8-}{4-}{10-}{9-}{j-} to give Lerner a straight and bust the player with kings.

Patrick Tardif
Patrick Tardif

With action on the river and the board reading {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{6-Spades}{j-Spades}. Patrick Tardif made a large bet of about 80,000 which Cesar Cruz called quickly.

Cruz showed the {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} set while Tardif had the {k-Clubs}{q-Spades} straight as he carved a large section of Cruz's stack away.

Iles Smashes Big Slick With Quads

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Matt Iles
Matt Iles

There was a preflop all in happening as Matt Iles was behind with the {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} vs the {a-Spades}{k-Spades} of his opponent.

The flop launched Iles into the lead as it came {9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{9-Spades}, the turn was overkill as the {9-Hearts} came off to give Iles quads. The river was a meaningless {3-Hearts} and Iles got the nice addition to his burgeoning stack.

Boat Over Boat Surges Hayward

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Thomas Hayward
Thomas Hayward

The board read {9-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades} on the turn. Thomas Hayward bet 30,000 and was called by his opponent.

The river brought a third nine the {9-Diamonds}. Hayward bet enough to put his opponent all in, who called and stood up at the same time as if he knew what was coming.

Hayward showed the {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} which crushed the {8-}{8-} of his opponent who walked out the room and Hayward added more to what is now the largest stack in the room.

Blumenthal Strikes Back With Two Pair

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Eddie Blumenthal
Eddie Blumenthal

The board read {5-Clubs}{j-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts} on the river. The chips ended up all in as Eddie Blumenthal had the lead with the {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} two pair while Jesus Bertoli had the {k-}{j-} top pair.

Blumenthal saw the lights flash before his eyes a bit as the {q-Diamonds} came on the river but it was not the king or jack and he exhaled as he secured the big double up, while Bertoli was sent down to a short stack after having been the one to take much of Blumenthal's stack not long ago.

Bertoli Bubbles Day 1b

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Jesus Bertoli on the Bubble
Jesus Bertoli on the Bubble

Jesus Bertoli was all in preflop as Kharlin Sued and Eddie Blumenthal played out a hand.

The flop came {7-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}. Both players checked, and the turn was the {4-Diamonds}. Sued bet 47,000 and Blumenthal folded.

The players had to wait for a long time as another hand went on at an adjacent table. Sued had already turned over the {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} and Bertoli was forced to sit and wait in agony for several minutes as he knew his night was over as the bubble boy. Finally, the hands could officially be tabled, and Bertoli had the {k-Spades}{9-Spades}. The river was meaningless, and the night ended as the players started to bag.
