Hayward Scores Double Knockout

Level 23 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Thomas Hayward
Thomas Hayward

There was a three-way all in preflop. Thomas Hayward was in the dream spot holding the {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} vs the {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades} of Matthew Jewett and the {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} of the shorter stack Alen Fillipi.

The flop came {q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, the turn was the {7-Clubs} to give Fillipe flush hope but the river was the {10-Spades} and Hayward gathered the chips of his two fallen opponents.

Elsewhere, Sammy LaFleur was eliminated to bring the field to the three table redraw.

Bretzfield Calls For River Card Correctly But Still Loses

Level 23 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Matthew Bretzfield
Matthew Bretzfield

There was a three-way all in preflop with Matthew Bretzfield with the shortest stack.

Matthew Bretzfield: {a-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Kelly Kielbasa: {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Harry Lodge: {q-Spades}{j-Spades}

The flop came {8-Spades}{3-Spades}{5-Hearts} to give Lodge the spade draw. The turn was the {4-Diamonds}. Bretzfield called for a deuce for the wheel and indeed it came the {2-Diamonds} as he celebrated.

But then he noticed that the sixes of Kielbasa had the higher straight and his joy changed to him walking to the payouts.

Dmitri Nobles

Dmitri Nobles recapped his bust out hand to the PokerNews live reporting team.

Nobles raised to 50,000 from the hijack and was called by Steven Sarmiento in the big blind.

On the {a-}{4-}{5-} pot, Sarmiento check-raised to 100,000 after Nobles bet 50,000. Nobles then reraised to 350,000.

Sarmiento moved all in as the covering stack and Nobles called off with the 700,000 chips he had behind.

Dimitri Nobles: {a-Hearts}{5-Hearts}
Steven Sarmiento: {3-}{2-}

Nobles flopped top two pair but was way behind the flopped wheel of his opponent. He had two chances to hit his full house but failed to connect on the turn or river.

Level 19 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Justin Lapka
Justin Lapka

One of the more amusing stories of the day so far was that Justin Lapka slept through his morning alarm and was blinded out of the event.

Lapka started the day with a short stack of 80,000 but not waking up in time may have earned him a bigger share of the prize pool.

He was officially eliminated in 95th place ($2,535) and collected his winnings from the payout desk.

Matthew Bretzfield
Matthew Bretzfield

After three starting flights and 1,245 entries, Day 2 of the PokerNews Cup at the Golden Nugget is set to begin at 12 p.m. PDT on Monday, June 27.

From Days 1a-1c, just 156 players were able to navigate over the first hurdle and bag and tag a stack for Day 2. All those players have made the money and have locked up a minimum prize of $1,450 but of course, all eyes will be on $202,725 up top. The PokerNews Cup has generated the largest prize pool in Golden Nugget history, with the final total being confirmed at $1,207,650!

Leading the pack is Day 1c chip leader Matthew Bretzfield (817,000). He was the only player to acquire more than 800,000 chips and is in prime position to make the final table. Aditya Rao (753,000) was another player to bag big on Day 1c and he is the player closest to Bretzfield. Rounding out the top three chip counts is Daniel Fuhs (709,000), who bagged best from Day 1b.

World Series of Poker bracelet winners that are still in contention include Michael Moore (422,000), Joon Kim (284,000), Abhinav Iyer (177,000), and Justin Lapka (80,000).

As well as keeping up with the live updates, you can watch the action from the PokerNews Cup on the PokerNews YouTube and Twitch channels from 4:30 p.m. PDT. Action will be on a 30-minute delay with live commentary and hole cards displayed.

The plan for Day 2 is to whittle the field of 156 down to the nine-handed final table, Day 2 will close when that milestone is hit. Play resumes with nine minutes on the clock at Level 16, with the blinds rolled back to 3,000/6,000/6,000.
