At 5 p.m. local time, Day 1b of the $400 Opening Event of the 2020 Potomac Winter Poker Open is set to start in the beautiful poker room in the MGM National Harbor casino. The Opening Event has an amazing guarantee of $500,000 and the first of six starting flights already attracted 207 entries with 16 surviving players making it through to Day 2 and another eight got paid $550.

In 2019, there was the $370 Opening Event during the regular Potomac Poker Open and Laura Moore walked away with $65,000 and the trophy when she outlasted 1,952. She agreed to a three-way deal with James Canoles and Lalith Mannur after almost 16 hours of play on Day 2 and it looks like the Winter Edition of the event will bring an equally long race to the win.

Daniel Araya has taken the Day 1a chip lead with 529,000 in chips, he is followed by Waleed Mian (442,000), Thomas LeBerre (425,000), George Karmires (404,000), and Michael Flesch (401,000). Day 1b is expected to be a bit busier than Day 1a as traditionally the number of entries creep up with each later starting flight. Day 1c and onwards will be taking place in the Ballroom on the 2nd floor of the hotel with two starting flights each day, one at 11 a.m. and 1 at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, February 6 and 7.

Players will get 25,000 in chips when they start the day with late registration and one reentry possible for the first 11 levels of the day. Level duration will be 30 minutes on Day 1 with a break planned after Level 4, 7, 11, 14, and 18. Each starting flight will pay 12% of the field as they cash for a fixed $550 while play will stop when there’s 8% of the field left.

Day 2 will begin at the shortest time played in any of the six starting flights and all Day 2 payouts will exceed the $550 Day 1 payout. The level duration for Day 2 will increase to 45 minutes until the final table when it will go up to 60 minutes and play will continue until a new winner has been crowned.

PokerNews will be there from the card dealt until the final bag has been sealed, so keep reading the updates right here.

Andrew Dansicker

Andrew Dansicker was sporting a substantially bigger stack than the starting stack and was kind enough to relay what had happened:

"I had nines and flopped a set on the {a-}{9-}{5-} board. A {5-} came on the turn to give me a full house. The {k-} came on the river, I bet 3,000, he shoved, I called. He had {a-}{k-} for top two pair."

Brannon Stays Alive

Level 2 : 100/200, 200 ante

Kenneth Brannon was all-in for a few chips from the big blind and called and covered by his opponent in the small blind.

Kenneth Brannon: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Small Blind: {7-}{7-}

The board ran out {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades}{4-Diamonds} to keep Brannon ahead with the higher pocket pair and double him up.
