Gabe Gonzales Leads 32 Survivors on Day 1c of Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty

Level 19 : Blinds 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Gabe Gonzales
Gabe Gonzales

After almost 18 full levels of play on Day 1c of Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty at the Potomac Winter Poker Open just 32 players remain from an initial field of 403. Leading those 32 players is Gabe Gonzales sitting on a large stack of 746,000, not too far ahead of Mark Martin with 611,000. Rounding out the top three is Mohammed-Ali Tadjer, who was able to amass 591,000.

Day 1c attracted the most runners out of all the starting flights so far and pushed the total number of entries in the event beyond the 1,000 mark. Partly as a result, it was also the flight that ran the longest on Day 1 as the other two flights did not make it to Level 18.

After lengthy bubble play throughout Level 17, the money was finally reached when the big slick of Ralph Kyttle (85,000) out-flopped the nines of his unfortunate opponent, sending them to the rail in 41st place.

With a tournament average stack of just over 20 big blinds, it did not take long for a further eight players to be sent to the payout desk, bringing the day to an end. Those eight players, while they will not be returning for Day 2 and the mystery bounty portion of the tournament, do take home $500 for their efforts.

The 32 remaining players will combine with the survivors of the other five flights on Sunday, January 27th at 12 p.m. at which point play will continue until a winner is crowned. Be sure to stay tuned as the Pokernews live reporting team remains on hand to provide comprehensive coverage of Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty through to its conclusion.

Kyttle Bursts Bubble

Level 18 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 0 ante
Ralph Kyttle
Ralph Kyttle

Picking up the action on the flop, a player in late position was all in with Ralph Kyttle in the small blind as well as another player in early position playing for a sidepot. With the board reading {j-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} Kyttle moved all in, forcing the early position player out of the hand.

Late Position Player: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}
Ralph Kyttle: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Kyttle was way ahead of the at risk player and in a great spot to burst the money bubble. The {4-Clubs} turn changed nothing with the {5-Diamonds} river officially eliminating the late position player and ensuring that those remaining will finish in the money. Play will now continue until 32 players remain, at which point the survivors will bag for the day.

Confusion Gifts Phelps Double

Level 13 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Dean Phelps
Dean Phelps

Dean Phelps moved all in for around 50,000 from middle position and was called by the player on the button. It quickly transpired, however, that the player on the button believed he was only calling a limp or perhaps a small raise. Given that he had tossed a chip into the middle, the ruling was clear and the call of the all in stood.

Button Player: {j-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Dean Phelps: {a-Hearts}{5-Hearts}

Phelps, though ahead, did not hold a dominant lead over his opponent, needing to fade two live cards. The {3-Hearts}{8-Spades}{2-Hearts} did give him a wheel and flush draw to take away some of his opponent's outs before the {7-Clubs} turn vaulted the button player into the lead. Needing to hit a four, heart or ace on the river to avoid elimination in one of the more sickening ways imaginable, he was able to do just that as the {k-Hearts} rolled off the deck.

Nguyen Survives

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Phong VIP Nguyen
Phong VIP Nguyen

Picking up the action on a flop of {q-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{a-Clubs}, Phong Vip Nguyen in the big blind was involved in a pot with a player on the button. Nguyen checked and his opponent led out for 4,000. Nguyen gave his decision some thought before opting to push his remaining 10,600 into the middle. The button player called with the larger stack to put Nguyen at risk.

Phong Vip Nguyen: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Button Player: {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

Nguyen was ahead with his cowboys, remarking that he had 'gone with my read' when deciding to risk it all despite the overcard on the flop. Still, he was not out of the woods yet, having to fade clubs, queens and eights with two cards to come. The {a-Spades} turn did remove some of his opponent's outs with the {6-Spades} river failing to change anything, thereby handing Nguyen a crucial double.

Ladies Good For Nguyen

Level 7 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Phong VIP Nguyen
Phong VIP Nguyen

Phong Vip Nguyen is no stranger to success in the poker world and has managed to make a good start to the day. A player moved all in for their last 10,000 on the button and was looked up by Nguyen with the covering stack out of the small blind.

Button Player: {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Phong Vip Nguyen: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

Nguyen was comfortably ahead and remained so on the {8-Clubs}{6-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-Hearts} runout to send his stack north of the 50,000 mark.

Czap Scores Early Knockout

Level 2 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante
Stephani Czap
Stephani Czap

A player in middle position opened to 600 and Stephani Czap responded by three-betting to 2,000 from the cutoff. Action folded to the small blind, who decided to move all in. The initial raiser got out of the way to send the action back to Czap who snapped it off to put their opponent at risk.

Small Blind Player: {k-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Stephani Czap: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Czap was in stellar position to get the knockout and scoop a large pot. The {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} flop did, however, give her opponent a gutshot. Nothing changed on the {8-Diamonds} turn with the {5-Diamonds} river completing a clean runout for the cowboys to send a healthy pile of chips Czap's direction.

Welcome to Day 1c of Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty

Shouyi Gao
Shouyi Gao

Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty at the 2023 Potomac Winter Poker Open continues today with Day 1c, the third of six starting flights.

Days 1a and 1b saw a combined 612 entries with just 48 of those players making it through to Day 2. Currently leading the survivors is Shouyi Gao of the United States, sitting on a massive stack of 920,000. Other large stacks include Jacob Mitich (806,000), Lashawn Myles (670,000) and day 1a chip leader David Simard (663,000).

Play for Day 1c is set to begin at 11 a.m. local time. Players taking their seats at that time will start with 25,000 in tournament chips and blinds of 100/100 with a 100 big blind ante. Levels throughout the day will be 30 minutes in length and late registration will remain open until level 12. The money bubble will burst once 10% of the field remains and play will only conclude when 8% of the initial runners are left. Those who make it into the money but bust on Day 1 will receive a flat $500.

The mystery bounty portion of the tournament does not come into play until Day 2, at which stage every remaining player will be assigned a mystery bounty. At that time, if a player knocks out an opponent, they will receive a mystery bounty ticket, which can be redeemed at the mystery bounty redemption table. Potential prizes range in value from $50 to $25,000.

Day 2 resumes on Sunday, January 29th at 12 p.m. with blind levels increasing to 45 minutes. Play will then continue until a winner is crowned.
