RunGood Pro Jonathan Gaviao Surges Late To Bag Lead

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Jonathan Gaviao
Jonathan Gaviao

Jonathan Gaviao spent Day 1a of the 2015 RunGood Poker Series Hard Rock Tulsa Main Event grinding a short stack. During Level 11 (1,000/2,000/300), he had 30,200, but 50 minutes later he put 192,500 in the bag to lead the 21 survivors from the 94 players who entered.

Gaviao, a sponsored RunGood Pro, is seeking his second main event cash on the tour after getting fifth here in April for $10,601. He has more than $530,000 in total live cashes and a World Series of Poker Circuit gold ring.

Gaviao had worked his stack up a bit when he opened from the cutoff seat during the night's final blind level of 1,200/2,400/400. Both blinds called, bringing a {3-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{5-Spades} flop. Gaviao bet after they checked, and the small blind shoved all in. Gaviao called off his 52,800 with the {9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} and his top two held against the {k-Spades}{2-Spades}.

His rush continued shortly after that against the same opponent when Gaviao opened on the button for 5,000 and saw the player ship all in from the big blind for his last 80,000. Gaviao called with the {a-Spades}{j-Spades} and the big blind had {a-}{7-} and found no improvement with his dominated holding.

Others who bagged after the 12 levels of Day 1a were Curtis Edens (177,000), Robert Barker (165,000), Jason Kinder (162,000), AP Phahurat (123,000), and Gaviao's fellow RunGood Pros Ray Henson (107,000) and Clint Tolbert (48,500). Tolbert got eighth here last fall for $7,855, and both he and Henson are coming off cashes in the WinStar River Poker Series Main Event that was recently held.

Some of the players who took shots on Day 1a and didn't bag included Justin Gardenhire, Greg Jennings, Rodney Spriggs, Ben Reason, Mike Tang, and Will Berry.

Two more Day 1 flights remain, both to be played Saturday, one at noon and one at 7 p.m. PokerNews will again be handling live reporting duties, so be sure to check in as the tournament continues.

We found Jonathan Gaviao in the cutoff getting it all in for 52,800 against the player in the small blind on a {3-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{5-Spades} flop, though we didn't see what the action was.

Gaviao: {9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Small blind: {k-Spades}{2-Spades}

Fading spades, Gaviao saw two bricks fall: {10-Hearts} and {4-Diamonds}.

Jennings Sends Presley, Dixon Packing

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jerry Dixon, pictured at this event last year.

Terry Presley made it 2,200 to go under the gun, and Rodney Spriggs three-bet to 7,200 on his left. Greg Jennings cold-called in the cutoff, and Jerry Dixon put his last 9,875 in from the button. Everyone else called, bringing a {j-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} flop four ways. Presley moved all in for 7,400, and Jennings snap-called after Spriggs mucked.

Dixon: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Presley: {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Jennings: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Jennings was in command with a set, but the {2-Hearts} turn gave Presley outs with a flush draw. Both improved on the {k-Clubs} river but Jennings' boat was best.

Jennings Gets Lucky

Level 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

Chips continue to fly at Table 27, where Greg Jennings recently scored an elimination. Three players saw a flop for what looked like about 1,000, and the big blind bet out 4,000 on the {j-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}. One player folded, leaving Jennings to act.

"Well we know what the next bet is," Jennings said, seeing his opponent had only about 8,000 behind.

Jennings put the player all in, and he called off with {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}. It was good as Jennings was drawing with {5-Spades}{4-Spades}. He missed the {3-Spades} turn but the {7-Clubs} river gave him a winnings straight.

Jennings has just shy of $300,000 in live cashes and recently took down HPT Kansas City for $118,000.

Welcome to Day 1a of RunGood Poker Series Hard Rock Tulsa

Ross Bybee, a past champion of RunGood Hard Rock Tulsa.

The Road to the RunGood Cup kicked off a few weeks ago at the Horseshoe in Council Bluffs, Iowa, just outside of Omaha, Neb. Brandon Fish booked the first win of the season when he topped a field of 283 and pocketed $34,267 and a trip to New Orleans for the season-ending championship.

Now, the RunGood Poker Series returns to its roots in Oklahoma for an event at Hard Rock Tulsa. Last fall, an event here drew 317 runners to blow past the $100,000 guarantee. RunGood Pro Ross Bybee took that one down as part of a four-way chop, banking more than $26,000 in the process.

The first of three starting flights kicks off at 7 p.m. local time, and players are scheduled to play 13 30-minute levels. They'll start with 20,000 at blinds of 25/50 and eliminated players may reenter as many times as they wish until the beginning of Level 9 (600/1,200/200).
