The 2014 Summer Slam kicked off Friday morning at the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, New York. The opening event was a $200 no-limit hold'em deepstack turbo tournament which attracted 108 total entries, and after an action-packed day of preflop shoves it ended with a five-way chop. Scott Hosbach was the chip leader at the time of the chip and was ruled the official winner, collecting $3,100 and the Event #1 trophy.

Also included in the deal were Paula Rasmussen, Matthew Caramanna, Brett Ansel and Greg Illig, all of whom received $2,600.

Many of Western New York’s top poker talents were on display on Friday. Among the pros who competed were Andy Spears, Jason Nablo, Travell Thomas, Randy Pfeifer and D.J. MacKinnon. Only MacKinnon was still standing when the money bubble approached with 14 remaining, and he was able to sneak in after two players were eliminated simultaneously.

At one table, Hosbach limped from middle position and David Villaincourt shoved for around 90,000 (five big blinds) from late position. Action folded back to Hosbach and he snap-called.

Villancourt: {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}
Hosbach: {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}

Hosbach's trap worked, and his kings held up through the {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{A-Diamonds} board to eliminate Villaincourt.

Meanwhile, one-time chip leader Aaron Olshan was eliminated at the next table over when his pocket kings were run down by Greg Illig’s ace-jack.

The remaining 12 players were all guaranteed $366, and they began falling quickly. The average stack at that point was around 10 big blinds and Chris Myers and Robert Lucas both hit the exits quickly before the final table was reached.

From there, Darrin Bracken, Sam Gercio, Paul McLean, MacKinnon and Steve Rumery were sent packing. MacKinnon had a roller-coaster final table, holding the chip lead at one point before losing several key pots. His last stand came when he moved all in with the {A-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and couldn’t overcome the {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} of Ansel.

The remaining five players then went on a break and came to terms on the aforementioned deal.

Rasmussen Finds Aces, Busts Napierala

Level 18 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Paula Rasmussen

Blake Napierala moved all in for around 10 big blinds from early position and after Robert Lucas tank-folded, Paul Rasmussen reshoved directly behind for a little more than Napierala had in his stack. Everyone else folded, and Blake discovered the bad news as Paula proudly flipped over her hand.

Napierala: {K-Spades}{10-Spades}
Rasmussen: {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}

Although it didn't look promising, Napierala's equity improved with the {3-Spades}{Q-Spades}{2-Diamonds} flop, giving him a flush draw and some life. But the {5-Diamonds} turn and {Q-Clubs} river left him going home empty-handed.

'You had to make me sweat, didn't ya," Rasmussen asked the dealer as she raked in a huge pot.

Olshan Ousts Two Ladies

Danielle Whipple moved all in for 26,000 form under the gun, Matthew Caramanna called from late position, and Kali Zurek reshoved from directly behind for 69,000. Action folded to Aaron Olshan in the big blind and he called, leaving Caramanna to a decision. He hesitantly tossed his cards into the muck, leaving three players to see a board.

Whipple: {K-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Zurek: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Olshan: {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}

Olshan had the best of it and it stayed that way through the {9-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{3-Spades} board. The two ladies were sent to the rail, leaving only 20 players left in the field.
