Mathias Fades the World

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

Last week Kevin Mathias won the opening event of Western New York Poker Challenge for $6,514, and now he is just one player away from a cash in the Main Event. However, Mathias nearly walked away empty handed.

In a recent hand, action folded to Pete Kaemmerlen on the button and he raised to 13,000. After the small blind folded, Mathias moved all in from the big blind for 41,500, and since it wasn't too much more, Kaemmerlen called.

Kaemmerlen: {j-Diamonds}{4-Spades}
Mathias: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}

Kaemmerlen was drawing to live cards, and he actually picked up a flush draw on the {7-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} flop. The {5-Spades} turn gave Kaemmerlen even more outs to a straight, meaning any jack, four, ace, six or diamond would give him the win.

It was a lot of outs for Mathias to fade, but he did it when the harmless {5-Clubs} peeled off on the river.

Burton Busts as Penultimate Bubble Boy

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

Things were going slow there for awhile, but things just heated up over at Table 2 on a flop of {6-Spades}{2-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. We missed the exact details, but we do know Richard Burton ended up shoving right into the made hand of Louis Aquilina.

Aquilina: {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Burton: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

Burton was chastising himself for the shove, and then watched as the {9-Spades} was put out on the turn to leave him drawing dead. The {10-Hearts} was put out on the river to make it official, and then Burton took his leave in 23rd place.

That means we are just one spot away from the money and hand-for-hand play has been initiated.

Napierala & Cicatello Fall

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Blake Napierala on Day 1.
Blake Napierala on Day 1.

We picked up the action on a {4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop when Blake Napierala checked and Jerry Calvaneso put out a bet. Pete Kaemmerlen then raised to 44,000, and Napierala sprung to life with an all-in check-raise to 107,000. Calvaneso quickly folded and then Kaemmerlen thought for a moment before calling.

Napierala: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
Kaemmerlen: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

Napierala was in a prime spot to double, but all of a sudden the rug was pulled out from under him when the dealer burned and turned the {10-Spades}. Kaemmerlen hit his two outer and Napierala was left drawing to two of his own. The {J-Spades} river wasn't it, and a volatile Napierala was eliminated from the tournament.

Meanwhile, Andrew Cicatello has also been eliminated from the tournament.

The Short Stack Succumbs

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Jim Piffer started the day as the short stack, but he held strong as eight other players hit the rail. Alas, he could hold on no longer.

Piffer got his short stack all in preflop holding the {a-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and was in bad shape against the {q-Clubs}{q-Spades} of Nicholas Walker. The board ran out a dry {7-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{2-Spades} and that was all she wrote for Piffer.

An Ace from Space for Aga

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

John Aga raised to 12,000 under the gun and cleared the field to Greg Miller, who moved all in from the sall blind. The big folded and Aga called off for 47,000.

Aga: {a-Spades}{j-Spades}
Miller: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Aga was in need of an ace, which he found on the {5-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop. Neither the {Q-Spades} turn nor {5-Hearts} river helped Miller recapture the lead, and Aga doubled through.

Miller had a little silver lining in that he doubled through Tracy Rouse the very next hand.

Bad Beat Sends Foster to the Rail

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

After Bob De Wolfe limped from middle position and Adam Foster raised to 13,000 from the small blind, Richard Burton shoved all in from the big for 52,000. De Wolfe folded and Foster, who had about the same amount in chips, snap-called.

Foster: {a-}{a-}
Burton: {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

Foster had the goods, and just as Burton was about to get up, the flop came down {3-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} to give him a major flush sweat. Much to the dismay of Foster, that flush came in when the dealer burned and turned the {K-Clubs}. The meaningless {J-Clubs} was run out on the river and an excited Burton was pushed the pot.

Foster was left with just 2,000 after the hand, which went in the very next hand. Foster was unable to win that hand, which means his Main Event came to an end shy of the money in 27th place.
