Jerry Calvaneso Holds Massive Lead After Day 1 of WNY Poker Challenge Main Event

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Jerry Calvaneso
Jerry Calvaneso

The 2014 Western New York Poker Challenge continued Saturday with the start of the $1,100 Main Event on the balcony of the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel in Niagara Falls, New York. The flagship event of the series smashed the $100,000 guaranteed prize pool as the 183 entries created a prize pool of $176,595.

Jerry Calvaneso will lead the 34 survivors into Day 2, all of whom will be eyeing the trophy and the $45,915 top prize. Calvaneso bagged 398,800, nearly double the amount of his next closest competitor.

Calvaneso told us that he played a satellite to the Main Event with the intention of selling it if he won. However, when he found out that he couldn't sell it, he attempted to negotiate a deal to get cash instead of the seat. He ended up winning the seat after another satellite player rejected his offer, and now he could parlay his satellite success into a much bigger payday on Sunday.

Registration and re-entries were available during the first four levels of the Main Event on Saturday, and most of the 183 entries came from single bullets. However, Rick Block fired three times before being eliminated early in the day. In his final entry, Block picked up aces against the pocket queens of Geoff McLeery, but McLeery drilled a queen to send Block home empty-handed.

The red-hot Andy Spears, fresh off his victory in Event #12 the night before, was also unable to advance to Day 2. Spears, who won two Main Events at the Seneca Niagara Falls Casino & Hotel in the past nine months, was eliminated during Level 10 on Saturday. Pete Kaemmerlen opened to 3,100 from under the gun and action folded around to Spears in the big blind. He shoved for around 17,000, and Kaemmerlen called.

Spears: {8-Hearts}{8-}
Kaemmerlen: {A-}{10-}

Spears increased his lead to 77% when the {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop added a flush draw to his hand, and it looked like he'd survive when the {7-Clubs} hit the turn. But the {Q-Spades} on the river improved Kaemmerlen to Broadway, sending Spears out the door.

Other notables joining Spears and Block on the rail on Day 1 were Jason Nablo, Randy Pfeifer, Alex Rivera, Ryan Rivers, and WSOP bracelet winner Greg Ostrander.

Several familiar faces managed to evade elimination on Day 1, including Johannes Mueller, Blake Napierala, Joseph Elia and the defending that of this event, Matthew Sande. Mueller, one of our Players to Watch entering the series, picked up most of his chips during a massive confrontation against Scott Gaddi after the dinner break.

According to Mueller, he called a four-bet preflop against Scott Gaddi to see a flop of {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{4-Clubs}. Gaddi bet 25,000, Mueller shipped it all in for around 60,000 effective, and Gaddi called.

Mueller: {A-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Gaddi: {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}

Gaddi called the shove ahead, and he improved further on the {8-Spades} turn. But Mueller hit gin when the dealer rolled over the {9-Clubs} on the river, giving Mueller a massive pot and sending Gaddi out the door.

Here's a look at the top 10 stacks entering Day 2:

Duke the Dream Killer

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Matt Cafarella
Matt Cafarella

Matt Cafarella raised from the cutoff and then called Pete Kaemmerlen's three-bet from the small blind.

The latter player then led out for 13,000 on the {j-Hearts}{a-Spades}{5-Spades} flop and Cafarella responded by moving all in for roughly 54,000. Kaemmerlen asked for a count, thought a little, and then quietly said, "I call."

Kaemmerlen: {a-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}
Cafarella: {6-Spades}{4-Spades}

"Come on dealer," Cafarella said hoping Duke the Dealer would deliver him another spade. On some nights Duke the Dealer may be so kind, but not tonight.

Tonight Duke the Dealer was as coldhearted as could be when he ran out the {2-Clubs} turn and {2-Diamonds} river to crush Cafarella's dreams.

Duke the Dealer ... Duke the Dream Killer.

Mueller Flushes Gaddi

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Johannes Mueller
Johannes Mueller

Johannes Mueller was one of our Players to Watch before the start of the Western New York Poker Open. He's really making us look smart now that he's sitting behind a stack of more than 150,000 in the Main Event.

According to Mueller, he called a four-bet preflop against Scott Gaddi to see a flop of {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{4-Clubs}. Gaddi bet 25,000, Mueller shipped it all in for around 60,000 effective, and Gaddi called.

Mueller: {A-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Gaddi: {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}

Gaddi called the shove ahead, and he improved further on the {8-Spades} turn. But Mueller hit gin when the dealer rolled over the {9-Clubs} on the river, giving Mueller a massive pot and sending Gaddi out the door.

Spears Human After All

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Andy Spears
Andy Spears

Andy Spears won two Main Events here at the Seneca Niagara Falls Casino & Hotel in the past nine months, but he will not make it a third. Pete Kaemmerlen opened to 3,100 from under the gun and action folded around to Spears in the big blind. He shoved for around 17,000, and Kaemmerlen called.

Spears: {8-Hearts}{8-}

Spears increased his lead to 83% when the {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop added a flush draw to his hand, and it looked like he'd survive when the {7-Clubs} hit the turn. But the {Q-Spades} on the river improved Kaemmerlen to Broadway, sending Spears to the rail.

Big Double for Walker

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Nick Walker
Nick Walker

We caught the tail end of a huge double-up for Nick Walker. Fortunately, Walker was kind enough to fill us in with the details.

Walker opened to 2,500 and received one caller before another player three-bet to 5,800. Action folded back to Walker, who four-bet to 14,400. That induced a fold from the player to his left, but the other player shoved for about 60,000 effective. Walker called and tabled the {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}, which was well in front of {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}.

The {Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop added some straight outs to his opponent's hand, but Walker held up through the {8-Hearts} turn and {3-Diamonds} river. He's now among the leaders with 133,000.

WSOP Bracelet Winner Sent to the Rail

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Greg Ostrander
Greg Ostrander

As previously reported, Greg Ostrander defeated Jackie Glazier in a memorable heads-up match to win the bracelet in Event #41: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em back at the 2012 World Series of Poker. He was one of two bracelet winners in the field (the other being Michael Malm), but his hopes of a Seneca Niagara title just came to an end.

In his last hand, action folded to Ostrander in the hijack and he moved all in for his last 9,800. Dave Olshan called from the cutoff and the rest of the players got out of the way.

Ostrander: {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Olshan: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Ostrander needed some help, and while the {q-Spades}{6-Clubs}{j-Spades} flop gave him a little, he needed more if he hoped to stay alive. The {5-Diamonds} turn didn't do it, and neither did the {K-Hearts} river.

Meanwhile, Olshan went on to eliminate the player in Seat 9 a short time later to jump up to 138K.

Demmerley Meets His Demise

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Art Demmerley
Art Demmerley

Art Demmerley got his stack of 11,000 or so all in preflop and was racing against Tom MacKinnon.

Demmerley: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}
MacKinnon: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

It was a flip, and all Demmerley needed to do was hold in order to survive. The {10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} flop not only kept Demmerley in the lead, it also gave him an open-ended straight draw. Conversely, the {4-Hearts} turn was kind to MacKinnon as it gave him a flush draw to go with his overs.

The {5-Hearts} river allowed MacKinnon to complete the said flush, and a downtrodden Demmerley took his leave from the Main Event.

Rivers Runs Dry

Level 7 : 300/600, 75 ante
Ryan Rivers
Ryan Rivers

Ryan Rivers has had a hell of a week, but he won't be capping it off with a Main Event title. Rivers won the Bad Beat Jackpot in the Seneca Poker Room on Wednesday for $72,000, and followed it up with a runner-up finish in Event #10 on the following day for $6,000.

He never gained any momentum today and got the last of his chips in preflop with the {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}. Two players called, and after big bets on the turn and river of a {2-Spades}{8-Spades}{A-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{K-Clubs} board Rivers came up second best against another player's {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}.

Still, $78,000 in a week is nothing to sneeze at.

Block's Aces Chopped Down

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Rick Block
Rick Block

Rick Block fired three bullets into this Main Event, and unfortunately for him there's no longer an option for a fourth. According to Block, he four-bet shoved pocket aces into a limper and a three-bettor, and only the three-bettor called with queens. The rest is history, and Block is on his way home.

WSOP Circuit Ring Winner Looking for More Success

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Andre Smith. Photo courtesy of WSOP.
Andre Smith. Photo courtesy of WSOP.

Last November, Andre Smith was in Quebec for the World Series of Poker Circuit Casino Lac-Leamy. It was there that the 29-year-old triathlete took down the $1,125 No-Limit Hold'em event to win $44,547 and a WSOP Circuit gold ring. Smith, who is wearing the said ring today, is hoping to top that score by capturing the $45,915 first-place prize here in Seneca Niagara Falls.

In a recent hand, a player in early position opened for 900 and was met by an all-in three-bet to 2,925 from a middle-position player. Smith then raised to 6,500 from late position, which inspired both blinds and the initial raiser to fold.

Smith: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Opponent: {q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

Both players shared a queen, which meant Smith's ace had him well out in front. The {5-Hearts}{k-Spades}{9-Spades} flop delivered the middle-position player a gutshot straight draw, but it proved fruitless as the {K-Clubs} blanked on the turn followed by the {9-Hearts} on the river.
