Day 1 Started

Welcome to the 2014 Western New York Poker Challenge Main Event

Tonight, legendary Tonight Show host Jay Leno is slated to play the Seneca Events Center just outside the tournament area. It'll be a big show, but for us all eyes will be on the 2014 Western New York Poker Challenge $100,000 Guaranteed Main Event!

The two-day tournament marks the culmination of the 16-event series (though there are still a couple events to come), and some of the area's best players are expected to participate including Thomas Keeper, who took down Event #10 on Thursday night after a four-way chop at the final table; runner-up in that event Ryan Rivers, who won the Bad Beat Jackpot here at the Seneca Poker Room on Wednesday night for $72,000; and Andy Spears, who won Event #12 NLHE Turbo Deepstacks last night in impressive fashion. In addition, we expect many of the players featured in our Players to Watch at the 2014 Western New York Poker Challenge to pony up.

The Main Event is set to kick off shortly on the balcony of the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, and of course the PokerNews Live Reporting team will be bringing you hand updates, photos, chip counts and more from the floor. We will also be activating the MyStack App for this event, allowing players to directly update their chip counts in the PokerNews blog using their iPhone or Android phone.

We are underway here in the Western New York Poker Challenge $1,100 Main Event. The tournament board currently reads 85 players, but we're expecting many more to filter in before registration closes in a few hours.

We're heading out to the floor to see who's here. See you in a bit.

Seventeen Tables Up and Running

Level 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

Right now there are 17 tables up and running on the hotel balcony. Not all of them are full, but there are at least two players at each. Players are still filtering in, which they'll continue to do throughout the early afternoon as registrations and unlimited reentries are open until the start of Level 5.

Kaemmerlen Looking for Even More East Coast Success

Level 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

Back in early March, the PokerNews Live Reporting Team was at Penn National Race Course in Grantville, PA for the 2014 Hollywood Poker Open Grantville Regional Championship $1,800 Main Event, which is where we first met Peter Kaemmerlen.

That tournament attracted a modest 37 runners, and Kaemmerlen managed to play his way all the way to third place for $10,178 with plenty of fireworks along the way. First he managed to double through Bradley Yazici to take a big chip lead, but a few hours later the double was reversed thanks to a lucky river card. After a break, Kaemmerlen returned to be decimated by yet another river card, and he then fell a couple hands later. Kaemmerlen played well in that event, but he just happened to get unlucky.

That's a fate he's hoping to avoid here today. In a recent hand, Kaemmerlen opened for 150 from the cutoff and received calls from the small blind and the lovely Natalia Metlach in the big blind. Two checks on the {7-Spades}{3-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop saw Kaemmerlen continue for 250, which only Metlach called. Both players proceeded to check the {9-Spades} turn, and then Metlech tossed out a T500 chip when the {4-Spades} completed the board on the river.

Kaemmerlen released his hand and watched the small pot pushed across the table. He may not have won that pot, but if recent the aforementioned tournament is any indication, Kaemmerlen will win his fair share as the day progressed.

The 2014 WNYPC Surpasses $100K Guarantee

Level 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

We're not even a level in and already the Seneca Niagara Falls 2014 Western New York Poker Challenge has surpassed its $100,000 guarantee. The tournament staff just announced the field is up to 105 players, which means right now there is $105,000 up for grabs. Of course those numbers are sure to go up as players continue to make their way to the tournament area.

We'll have official numbers and payouts when they're solidified in Level 5.

Defending Champ in the Building

Level 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

Last year, Matthew Sande bested a field of 172 entries to win the 2013 WNY Poker Challenge Main Event. Sande, from nearby Rochester, NY, defeated Ray Smalls to capture the $44,582 top prize — the biggest live score of his career.

Sande just took his seat at Table 1 with notables Johannes Mueller and Art Demmerley. Also joining us in the past few minutes was Cam Bartolotta, who finished third in yesterday's Event #12: $200 No-Limit Hold'em Deepstack Turbo.
