The second event on the 2015 Western New York Poker Challenge schedule will kick off just minutes from now.

The annual series runs through March 15th with eight major events culminating in the $200,000 Guaranteed $1,000 Main Event and Event #2, a $500 No Limit Hold'em tournament, begins at 11 a.m. this morning.

This event will feature 30-minute levels and 30,000-chip starting stacks. Registration is open until the start of Level 5 and there is unlimited re-entries for the first 8 levels.

The tournament is scheduled for one day and will play down to a winner today.

In 2014, Joseph Elia won the second event on the Western New York Poker Challenge schedule besting a field of 112 entries to claim the $14,364 first-place prize.

A similar size field is expected today as the Western New York area's top rounders flock to the Seneca Niagara Casino in the shadow of Niagara Falls.

As always, the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on the floor providing coverage of all the action from start to finish.

Shaking Off The Rust

Level 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

We're off to a rather slow start here at in the second event on the 2015 Western New York Poker Challenge schedule.

Currently the board reads just 30 entrants with a few late stragglers at the registration cage.

A groggy Saturday morning at the Niagara Falls Poker Room should give way to some heavy poker action as the day moves forward.

They Flopped It

Level 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

Frank Maltese and Robert MacEarhern were joined by a third player heading into a {10-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} flop.

Both Maltese and the third player checked, leading to a 300-chip bet from MacEarhern. Maltese fired back with a check-raise to 700 and after the third player folded, MacEarhern made the call.

The turn brought the {5-Diamonds} and a 1,000-chip bet from Maltese. MacEarhern made the call again and after the {8-Clubs} river was revealed, Maltese tapped the table with a check.

MacEarhern threw out a 2,000-chip bet and Maltese made the crying call.

"You got me on the turn," he said.

"No, I flopped it," retorted MacEarhern, showing {k-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}.

"We both flopped it," added Maltese, claiming a jack-high flush that was simply outpipped.

Buffalo's own Art Demmerley is off to about as good a start as one can have.

He recently made aces full in a more than 40,000-chip pot and was fortunate enough to get paid off against an opponent holding nines full.

Just halfway through the second level he's got almost twice the starting stack and the early chip lead.

Jerry Calvaneso

Less than 12 hours after getting the best of a 139-player field to take down Event #1 of the 2015 Western New York Poker Challenge and collect $6,285 in first-place prize money, Jerry Calvaneso is back for more.

He joined the field here in Event #2 within the last few minutes and is already building a stack.

Calvaneso limped from late position and was joined by the player to his left before the button made it 450. Calvaneso called, as did his neighbor and they went three-handed to an {a-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop.

Calvaneso and the third player in the hand checked before the button made it 900. Only Calvaneso called and was joined by his heads-up opponent in checking the {9-Diamonds} turn. The river came the {7-Diamonds} and both players checked again with Calvaneso showing a turned flush holding {10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}.

The button had {a-Hearts}{10-Spades} and Calvaneso scooped the pot.
