Western New York may be still thawing out from another long and hard winter, but things are heating up inside the Niagara Falls Poker Room at the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino.

Today marks the start of the Western New York Poker Challenge, an 11-day tournament series that always draws top rounders from near and far.

The first tournament on the schedule is a humdinger. It's a $300 No Limit Hold'em event with four starting flights and a whopping $100,000 guarantee. The first flight went of this morning, drawing 120 entries. Seventeen survived and will return for Day 2 Sunday.

The second starting flight goes off now and two more are scheduled for Saturday.

Players get 15,000 in starting chips and will attempt to navigate their way through 14 half-hour levels in the opening flights. Registration and unlimited re-entry is available until the start of Level 9.

The Regs

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

2016 Seneca Summer Slam standout 'Bang Bang' Billiteri is still hanging in the cash games in the back promising to buy in before the eight-level cutoff comes.

In the meantime, the following regs have regged already.

David Olshan watched one player try to make a big bluff twice with little in the way of success.

Then, after Olshan flopped the nut straight, that same player shoved his short stack with a flush draw. The flush failed to materialize and Olshan's got the full double up and the Level 2 chip lead.

Maria Parlatore just joined the early leaders in this flight after getting it in with two pair over two pair.

She had the {k-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} on a {4-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{8-Hearts} board to the turn and it was better than her opponent's {4-Spades}{8-Clubs} two pair.

Parlatore also had this foe covered and now has close to two starting stacks after the river bricked.
