Berman and Fourie Top Day 1a at GrandWest Cape Town; Defending Champion Karrim Advances

Level 14 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Clive Berman
Clive Berman

The first of four starting days has concluded for the 2024 Sunbet Poker Tour GrandWest stop in Cape Town and the final festival of ths year usually gathers the largest fields for Africa's Richest Poker Tour. Held in cooperation with South Africa's leading casino operator Sun International and the Monster Jam Poker Tour (MJPT), the marquee ZAR 15,000 Main Event ($828) is well on track to reach and surpass the ZAR 4 Million guarantee in the days to come.

One year ago, the very same tournament attracted a field of 429 entries and the opening flight drew a total of 130 entries, of which 20 players bagged up chips nearly 14 hours after the first cards went into the air.

A duo sits atop the leaderboard, virtually tied and separated by only a single chip as Clive Berman (677,000) edged past Gareth Fourie (676,000) by the smallest of margins possible. Jaron Kavnat (550,000) and Christopher Dean (445,000) are the next biggest stacks and they all ended up on the same table during the final stages of the night.

Among those to finish with a top ten stack were also Okkie Fourie, Max Deveson, and Adrian Andritz.

Defending champion Ahmed Karrim finished just outside of the top ten after two late setbacks. He had busted the High Roller before the money and ran up a stack, but then doubled Vygandas Simuntis close to the end before also being involved in the final showdown on Day 1a. Karrim's attempt to knock out Simon Solomon and Remy Leblanc with ace-jack was then not crowned by success, as he rivered a straight but Solomon improved to the ace-high flush to survive and triple up.

Eventual chip leader Berman knocked out one of the 2024 SPT Main Event champions in Sean Bloom en route to topping the leaderboard, while Fourie was at the end of a cascade of large pots throughout the day. He survived a spectacular four-way all-in thanks to a rivered straight in level seven to stay in the mix to enter the highlight reel in the first half.

Jonathan Hoal then saw his flopped straight crushed by the turned quads of Joe Rahme, who was ousted by Jedd Kossew when he ran pocket kings into pocket aces. Fourie then knocked out Colin Horgan with kings versus fives to get a decent stack. Kossew moved next to him and Fourie five-bet jammed pocket jacks into his aces ... only to turn a set in a huge pot. There was no happy end for Kossew thereafter, as his nines were no match to the kings of aforementioned Dean who became a wrecking ball.

Further notables to come and leave without anything to show for but their entry slips were Maxwell Young, Sheldon Grove, Patrice Ah-Nien, Wesley Blom, Jehan Richards, Nellie Park, Jaryd Jardien, and yesterday's The Hendon Mob Challenge Cape Town Million runner-up Sugen Singh.

All of them are expected to join the action again in the days to follow as another three starting flights will take place across September 28 and 29, 2024. Stay tuned back then for all of the exciting live poker action here in South Africa as the PokerNews team will be on the floor until a winner has been crowned.

Leblanc Elimination Concludes Day 1a

Level 14 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Simon Solomon
Simon Solomon

Remy Leblanc open-jammed for 55,000 from under the gun and Ahmed Karrim called in the cutoff. Simon Solomon then put his last 56,000 in from the big blind and Karrim added the single chip to put two players at risk.

Remy Leblanc: 77 All in
Simon Solomon: AA All in
Ahmed Karrim: AJ

The Q105 flop gave Karrim a gutshot and the 9 turn added further outs to potentially knock out two players. He hit a king on the river, but it was the K to give Solomon a flush for the triple up. Leblanc was eliminated and that reduced the field to the last 20 players who will now bag and tag the chips for the night.

Cohen Bleeds Off Chips

Level 13 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Justin Cohen
Justin Cohen

Just before the blinds went up, Justin Cohen limped in and Gareth Fourie did so from the cutoff. Jaron Kavnat on the button raised to 12,000 and earned two calls. The Q44 flop was checked to Fourie and he bet 5,000, only Cohen called with a shorter stack behind.

That led them to the 8 turn on which Cohen check-called for another 5,000.

On the 3 river, Cohen checked and Fourie now bet 10,000. The curiosity caught Cohen, as he sighed and almost silently let out an "fuck ... I am bleeding off my chips". He asked Fourie if he had a four or queen, to which the big stack replied "honestly ... no, I swear".

Cohen called to get shown 88 for a turned full house, exposed his 66 and plummeted to only a handful of big blinds.

Van Huyssteen Busts; Dean Thrives Further

Level 13 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Braam Van Huyssteen

Justin Cohen value-bet a queen-high river for 20,000 and was called by Christopher Dean to declare "I have a queen" before Dean replied "so do I", exposing the AQ.

"That's bad," Cohen chimed in as he flashed the QJ before the pot was shipped to the other side of the table.

At the same time one table over, the flop showed 953 and Braam van Huyssteen bet for 12,000 out of the small blind to get called by Eban Lottering in late position. Van Huyssteen used a time bank on the 8 turn before he jammed for a short stack and Lottering instantly tossed in calling chips.

Eban Lottering: 55

Van Huyssteen needed an eight or nine but the A river ended his run shy of making Day 2. Fellow The Hendon Mob Challenge finalist Renier Britz followed suit moments later to bring the field down to the last 24 contenders.

Fourie Wins Gargantuan Pot to Sucker Punch Kossew

Level 12 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Gareth Fourie
Gareth Fourie

There were 25,000 chips out in front of Gareth Fourie and Jedd Kossew had then four-bet from the next seat to 60,000. It folded back to Fourie and he moved all-in with a large stack only to get snap-called by the only player that covered him.

Gareth Fourie: JJ All in
Jedd Kossew: AA

Fourie was shell-shock almost instantly and found no help on the K98 turn, but retained some back door equity. Instead, he spiked the J turn and gasped an "oh wow". The table fell silent ahead of the 4 river before Fourie's double was counted. He was in there for 292,500 and skyrocketed into the lead.

"I have a feeling you won't be leaving any time soon," Justin Cohen told the new chip leader.

Horgan Crashes Out Against Fourie

Level 11 : Blinds 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Colin Horgan
Colin Horgan

In a preflop raising war, Colin Horgan got it in against Gareth Fourie and had a mountain to climb in order to avoid his elimination.

Colin Horgan: 55 All in
Gareth Fourie: KK

The dominated pair found no help on the Q88K9 board, instead, Fourie turned kings full to lock up the pot. Both stacks were briefly counted but Fourie covered without a doubt.

Jehan Richards three-bet jammed into Max Deveson and Jaron Kavnat looked up the short stack shove, while Deveson folded.

Karrim Loses Two All-Ins; Wins One

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Ahmed Karrim
Ahmed Karrim

Diane Walker, Ahmed Karrim and Max Deveson limped in. Jehan Richards jammed for 27,000 in the small blind and Karrim was the only caller.

"I have aces," Karrim declared with a sheepish smile on the face. Richards showed his A3 first and Karrim then exposed the 33. "I know you had a three, so it's like aces," he said.

"The hearts will come," Richards replied and the table burst out in laughter when the flop fell KJ4. Karrim was hiding the runout from Richards as the rest of the table gasped to build up suspension. The 2 turn brought a gutshot and the 5 indeed came on the river.

Marc Grune then got it in against Karrim with A6 versus A7. They were chopping until the Q108A turn but the 6 river gave Grune the double, too.

Karrim then sucked out with 76 against the 109 of Alan Jung on a board of QJ463 and avoided losing a third all-in showdown in a row. Jung was left short and busted thereafter.

Blom Out and Back In With a Bad Beat Story to Tell

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Wesley Blom
Wesley Blom

Wesley Blom from under the gun clashed with Max Deveson in the big blind and they got the chips in after the K75J turn. Blom's AA needed help as Deveson had that beat holding the KJ and the 4 river was a blank.

The table was short handed after Deveson had apparently cleaned up, and he also won the next hand by three-betting an open raise by Diane Walker. She folded and was shown the K. "What's the other card?" Walker asked and Deveson replied "also a king" without showing.

Blom re-entered to table 11 that itself also had lost several players.
