Day 1a Started

Welcome to the 2024 SunBet Poker Tour Time Square Main Event!

Time Square Casino Poker Room
Time Square Casino Poker Room

The SunBet Poker Tour is the newest and most exciting poker series in South Africa and has been launched in a partnership between the Monster Jam Poker Tour (MJPT) and Sun International Group, the leading South African gaming and hospitality company. From February 28 until March 10, 2024, the SunBet Poker Tour is taking place at the Time Square Casino in Pretoria with 12 major tournaments scheduled in as many days.

All eyes will be on the SunBet Poker Tour Time Square Main Event, which is slated to play down to a winner throughout the next five days. The tournament features a buy-in of ZAR15,000 (~$790) and comes with a guarantee of ZAR5,000,000 (~$263,400) whereas the entire festival offers ZAR12,000,000 in guarantees.

A total of four different starting days are available with Day 1a to Day 1c featuring a level duration of 50 minutes each. The registration for each heat will conclude upon completion of level ten with unlimited re-entries available during that period. Each Day 1 will play 15 levels or down to 15% of each respective field. Cash prizes will be distributed as of Day 2 as one out of eight entries will be in the money.

All players start with 40,000 in chips and that makes for a deep structure right away, as the initial blinds will be 100-200 with a big blind ante of 200. A long day at the tables can be expected with a 60-minute dinner break after level seven at approximately 6:35 p.m. local time.

Day 1a will kick off at noon local time and the PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor from start to finish for the first time right here in South Africa.

Shuffle Up and Deal in the Main Event

Level 1 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante

With a busy room at lunch time already, the cards are in the air for Day 1a of the Main Event as well. Some 21 players are registered spread across four tables and they are now involved in the action with 200 big blinds each.

The button is in seat number nine and the action is underway. Players can take part in multiple flights and carry forward the best stack, as confirmed during the shuffle up and deal by tournament staff.

High Roller Day 2 Underway

Besides the first of the three starting days for the Main Event, Day 2 of the ZAR50,000 High Roller is also underway. It started one hour ago at 11 a.m. local time. The field is still in the late registration period and currently up to 56 entries with 36 players remaining.

An initial guarantee of ZAR1,500,000 has already been surpassed as the prize pool currently shows more than ZAR2.2 million. With 300,000 starting chips, new entries would get 50 big blinds right now with an average of 93 big blinds.

American actress, model and poker player Elizabeth is married to a South African and lives here now to give the SunBet Poker Tour stop at Time Square a shot.

Wheatley Hits the Flush for an Early Boost

Level 1 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante
Russel Wheatley

Russel Wheatley bet the A74 flop for 1,200 to earn one caller on the button and he then checked the K turn. The button made it 4,000 to go for Wheatley to come along and then led again the 8 river for 13,000. Wheatley received the call and turned over his 43 for a flush to scoop a decent pot in the first level of the day.

Three ways to the AJJ flop, Marvin Torres bet 500 and received one raiser to 1,000 in the cutoff to call. Torres then check-called the 9 turn before he checked the Q on the river. The cutoff bet 4,000 for Torres to grab two time bank extensions and toss it towards the middle of the table.

Torres then check-raised to 16,000 and his opponent tank-folded to get shown the AJ for a flopped full house.

Solomon Recovers Some Chips

Level 1 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante

Shannon Elizabeth opened to 700 from under the gun and was called two ways by the player from one seat over and Jarred Solomon in the big blind. On the K95 flop, Solomon check-called when Elibabeth made it 1,100 to go and the third player in the hand also came along.

The board paired with the K turn and Solomon now bet 2,000. This won the pot uncontested as Solomon recovered some early losses.
