Kaverman Leads, Holz Looming After Day 1 of SHRB

Level 7 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Byron Kaverman
Byron Kaverman

One of the most prestigious tournaments in the poker world got underway with seven levels of Day 1 action at ARIA, and when the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl finished up play, Byron Kaverman bagged the chip lead.

He turned his 300,000 starting stack into 1,247,000, giving him a sizable lead over King's Casino owner and EPT Prague $50K Super High Roller champ Leon Tsoukernik (912,000). High roller crushed Fedor Holz, who finished second in this event last year for $3.5 million, sits in third with 803,000.

The SHRB got going in the early afternoon with the majority of players taking seats right at tip-off, while a few, like Phil Hellmuth, arrived only a bit late. It featured a bit of an unusual betting structure that called for the normal small and big blinds but also a large ante from the big blind that served to keep things moving and keep the chips more consolidated into bigger denominations.

Kaverman won a couple of huge hands that enabled him to bag his lead. He got sneaky with aces after opening for a raise, just calling a reraise from Cary Katz and then flopping a full house. Katz flopped trip kings with king-five of hearts and made a full house of his own on the turn. He ended up calling a large check-raise on the river.

Later, Kaverman made a straight with jack-nine of clubs against Igor Kurganov, who hit top two pair with ace-queen. He couldn't get away on the river when Kaverman put him all in.

Holz got lucky to eliminated John Juanda in a three-bet pot that saw Juanda get it in with top pair on the turn but Holz get there with a gutshot and flush draw.

Holz's well-known penchant for running through high roller events has enabled him to rack up over $22 million in tournament cashes. Poker fans around the world will be following closely to see if he can keep up his amazing run with another final table finish here at ARIA.

Another player who will have plenty of eyeballs following his coverage is actor and comedian Kevin Hart. Hart made it through Day 1 with just a hair below the starting stack, but he memorably eliminated Hellmuth. The two got it in on a queen-high board with Hart holding top set of queens and Hellmuth a smaller set of threes. When he couldn't spike his one-outer, Hellmuth was done.

In all, 12 players saw their tournaments come to an end in the slow-paced, deep-stacked Day 1. In addition to the "Poker Brat," Erik Seidel, Ben Sulsky, Ben Tollerene, Ankush Mandavia and Haralabos Voulgaris hit the rail.

The remaining 44 return on Monday for Day 2, scheduled to start once again at 1 p.m. Come back to PokerNews for more updates then.

Seidel Silenced

Level 7 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

From the cutoff, Erik Seidel opened to 8,000 only to have Cary Katz three-bet the button to 20,000.

The action folded back to Seidel and he moved all in for 106,000 with Katz instantly calling.

Katz: {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Seidel: {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

The {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop would render Seidel drawing extremely thin needing running cards to a straight or to a chopped flush.

The {6-Spades} on the turn would end things as the meaningless {5-Clubs} completed the board on the river and Seidel was eliminated.

Kaverman Eclipses One Million Chips at Kurganov's Expense

Level 6 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Igor Kurganov
Igor Kurganov

With roughly 70,000 in the middle and the board reading {A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}, Byron Kaverman bet out 40,000 from the small blind.

The action was on Igor Kurganov from under the gun, and he raised to 120,000.

Kaverman pushed out a stack of chips amounting to a three-bet of 355,000 to effectively put Kurganov all in.

Kurganov would proceed to use two time extension buttons before eventually calling all-in for his 250,000 total.

Kaverman tabled {J-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for a rivered straight as Kurganov tabled his {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}.

With Kurganov heading to the rail, Kaverman becomes the first player to exceed the one million chip mark.

Double for Negreanu with Top Set

Level 6 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Pratyush Buddiga opened to 6,000 from under the gun only to have Daniel Negreanu three-bet next to act to 16,000. Tom Marchese cold-called in the cutoff as the blinds and Buddiga folded.

The flop of {K-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Hearts} saw Negreanu continue for 12,000 with Marchese making the call as the {9-Clubs} on the turn saw both players check.

The river landed the {10-Spades} and Negreanu dropped in a bet of 28,000.

Marchese reached fora stack of chips and announced he was all in. Negreanu quickly called for his last 116,000 and tabled his {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds} for top set while Marchese showed his {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds} and dropped to 175,000 in chips.

Ankush Mandavia
Ankush Mandavia

With roughly 35,000 in the middle and the board reading {9-Spades}{8-Hearts}{A-Spades}{2-Hearts}, Ankush Mandavia moved all in for his last 37,000 and Stefan Schillhabel called.

Mandavia: {A-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
Schillhabel: {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}

With Mandavia ahead, he would need to fade a spade to stay alive, but unfortunately for him, the {3-Spades} on the river would end his tournament.

Set-Over-Set Sees Phil Hellmuth Eliminated by Kevin Hart

Level 5 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth limped in from the hi-jack and Kevin Hart raised to 7,000 from the button. Byron Kaverman called in the big blind, as did Hellmuth.

The flop fell {Q-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{3-Spades} and the action was checked through as the {10-Hearts} landed on the turn.

Kaverman checked again before Hellmuth bet out 10,000 and Hart called. With the action on Kaverman, he check-raised to 32,000 and Hellmuth re-organized his chips before moving all in for 70,000. Hart quickly iso-shoved over the top for roughly 259,000 and Kaverman folded.

Hellmuth: {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}
Hart: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}

With Hellmuth at risk and needing to spike the last three in the deck, the river landed the {10-Spades} to send him packing.

"Good hand Phil. Take it easy man!" stated Hart following the hand.

As Hellmuth made his way to the outer tables, Hart came over to the edge of the stage and announced loudly, "I bust Phil! Everybody I bust Phil out!"

Cheers followed from players and on-lookers before Hart added, "It was me. I did the damage!"
