$16.8 Million Prize Pool, 56 Players, and a $300,000 Buy-In; Welcome to the 2017 Super High Roller Bowl!

Kevin Hart will be one of the 56 Super High Roller Bowl players!
Kevin Hart will be one of the 56 Super High Roller Bowl players!

Welcome to the ARIA Resort & Casino for the opening day of the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl! Summer may not officially begin for a few more weeks here in the Northern Hemisphere, but in the poker world, the Super High Roller Bowl kicks off the action-packed summer of poker right here in Las Vegas.

One of the most anticipated events of the year sees the Super High Roller Bowl grace the floor of the ARIA Resort & Casino for the third time. This year the capped field size was expanded to 56 following the overwhelming interest of people wanting to be involved in one of the marquee events of the next couple of months.

“These additions will give more players a chance to play in the best event of the year and also play for an even bigger prize pool," said ARIA’s Director of Poker Operations Sean McCormack to Poker Central. "Bigger is always better and the increase in prize pool and first-place payout, along with the enormous prestige of the Super High Roller Bowl, will be welcomed by the players.”

You can’t talk about the 56 players without first discussing the previous champions in Brian Rast and Rainer Kempe. In 2015, Rast topped a field of 43 entries to capture the $7,525,000 first-place prize in an event that featured a $500,000 buy-in once he defeated Scott Seiver for the title. In 2016, it would be Kempe topping the 49-player field to earn the $5,000,000 first-prize after defeating fellow German Fedor Holz heads-up.

These players are just a few of the many taking a seat today. Two-time final table member Erik Seidel will be hoping to break through with a victory in his third shot, while other final tablists such as Connor Drinan, David Peters, Thomas Marchese, Phil Hellmuth, and Bryn Kenney will all be looking to repeat their past performances. Past results may be littered with American flags, but Europeans such as Christoph Vogelsang, Dominik Nitsche, Igor Kurganov, and Tony G will be looking to alter that, while businessmen Cary Katz, Dan Shak, David Einhorn, Bill Klein, and John Morgan will be hoping to show these poker pros that they mean business on the felt too.

One of the new entrants for 2017, and easily one of the most famous people to ever play a poker tournament is Kevin Hart. Hart has taken a seat at two of the biggest high roller events in the world this year with appearances in the $100,000 Super High Roller at PokerStars Championship Bahamas in January, and most recently at the €100,000 Super Higher Roller at the PokerStars Championship in Monte Carlo in April. Hart will now turn his attention to his biggest recorded tournament buy-in to date with the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl.

Hart is one of the most successful comedians, writers, producers, and movie stars of our generation. He’s now looking to add poker player to that list. Actually, he’s looking to add Super High Roller Bowl Champion to that list. And with a combined 86 million followers across Twitter and Instagram, Hart will be bringing a whole lot of attention to not only this event, but to the game of poker as a whole.

The 2017 Super High Roller Bowl will feature a jaw-dropping $16,800,000 prize pool that will ensure the final seven players heading home with some cash. $6 million is reserved for the eventual winner while $3.6 million will be a fair prize for the runner-up. The other paid places will receive $2.4 million for third, $1.8 million for fourth, $1.4 million for fifth, $1 million for sixth, and $600,000 for seventh.

The cards are expected to be in the air at 1:00 p.m. (PST) with the PokerNews Live Reporting Team providing continuous live updates of all the Super High Roller Bowl action live from the ARIA Resort & Casino. Stay tuned right here to PokerNews.com as we write the path of the next Super High Roller Bowl Champion as they navigate one of the toughest tournament fields ever assembled!

Katz Eliminates Voulgaris

Level 2 : 500/1,000, 1,500 ante
Haralabos Voulgaris
Haralabos Voulgaris

After Kevin Hart limped in, Cary Katz made it 4,000 to go. Haralabos Voulgaris called in the big blind, and Hart made it three to a {7-Hearts}{4-Spades}{q-Clubs} flop. Action checkd to Katz, who bet 10,000. Both of his opponents called. Two more checks followed the {3-Hearts}, and Katz bet 24,000. Voulgaris made it 60,000, Hart folded and Katz shoved all in. After thinking for a couple of minutes, Voulgaris called off for 209,000.

Voulgaris: {q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Katz: {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

Voulgaris needed a queen or seven to fill up on the river, but it was a {k-Diamonds} arriving. He shook Katz's hand and took his leave.

Roberts Saved by Rivered Ace

Level 2 : 500/1,000, 1,500 ante
Lauren Roberts
Lauren Roberts

Lauren Roberts kicks off the action with a raise under the gun to 3,000. It folded round to David Peters in the small blind, and he three-bet as Christian Christner called in the big blind.

Roberts called also as both Peters and Christner checked the {5-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} flop to Roberts who opted to bet out 12,000.

Peters folded, but Christner check-raised to 36,000 as Roberts went into the tank. Roberts then elected to use one of her time extension buttons before finally coming to a decision of a three-bet amounting to 88,000. Christner paused for a few moments and then moved all in as Roberts made the call for her tournament life.

Christner: {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Roberts: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}

With Roberts in desperate need to spike either an ace or running cards to make a flush or straight, the turn of the {7-Spades} would leave her drawing to just an ace.

Fortunately for Roberts, the river landed the {A-Spades} and ensured her of a double to 420,000 while Christner drops to 70,000 in chips.

Hart Flops Straight

Level 3 : 500/1,500, 1,500 ante
Kevin Hart
Kevin Hart

From under the gun, Kevin Hart opens the action with a limp before Bryn Kenney makes it 5,500 next to speak.

The action folds back to Hart and he calls as the flop falls {4-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and he checks.

Kenney bets out 7,000 and Hart calls as the {3-Diamonds} on the turn is checked by both players.

The river lands the {8-Clubs} and Hart bets out 13,000 with Kenney quickly calling.

Hart tables his {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts} for a flopped straight and scoops the pot.

"Is that a straight?" asks Hart.

"You flopped it!" announces the dealer.

"Say that again," quips Hart to the dealer while he rakes in the pot.

The Fall of John Juanda

Level 3 : 500/1,500, 1,500 ante
John Juanda
John Juanda

John Juanda bet 11,500 from the small blind on a board of {q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{8-Spades}. David Einhorn made it a big raise to 46,000 in the cutoff, and Juanda used a time extension before mucking, leaving himself just over 100,000.

The next hand, Juanda opened button and called a three-bet to 14,500 from small blind Fedor Holz. The flop came {4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{a-Clubs} and Juanda called a continuation-bet of 11,000. Holz moved all in on the {6-Clubs} turn, and Juanda called the rest off without much delay.

Juanda: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Holz: {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

Holz had turned a combo draw, but he needed help on the river. The dealer delivered it in the form of the {10-Clubs}. Juanda calmly slid his remaining time extensions to the dealer and headed for the doors.

Bill Perkins

The businessman known only as G.I. was all in for 41,000 when we got to his table, and Bill Perkins was all in also for 47,000. Dan Smith put them both at risk.

G.I.: {j-Spades}{8-Spades}
Perkins: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Smith: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}

Perkins called for a ten but didn't even need the one he got as the board ran out {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{10-Spades}.

"All right," he said. "Got some bluffin' chips now."

Set-Over-Set Sees Phil Hellmuth Eliminated by Kevin Hart

Level 5 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth limped in from the hi-jack and Kevin Hart raised to 7,000 from the button. Byron Kaverman called in the big blind, as did Hellmuth.

The flop fell {Q-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{3-Spades} and the action was checked through as the {10-Hearts} landed on the turn.

Kaverman checked again before Hellmuth bet out 10,000 and Hart called. With the action on Kaverman, he check-raised to 32,000 and Hellmuth re-organized his chips before moving all in for 70,000. Hart quickly iso-shoved over the top for roughly 259,000 and Kaverman folded.

Hellmuth: {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}
Hart: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}

With Hellmuth at risk and needing to spike the last three in the deck, the river landed the {10-Spades} to send him packing.

"Good hand Phil. Take it easy man!" stated Hart following the hand.

As Hellmuth made his way to the outer tables, Hart came over to the edge of the stage and announced loudly, "I bust Phil! Everybody I bust Phil out!"

Cheers followed from players and on-lookers before Hart added, "It was me. I did the damage!"

Christian Christner
Christian Christner

Christian Christner made his short stack last quite a few hours but finally fell when he got {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} in preflop against the {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts} of fellow German Christoph Vogelsang. The board ran out {5-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}, and Christner hit the rail when Vogelsang paired.

A table will now break for the first time in this event.
