Alain Bauer Wins Event #13: $3,000 Main Event For $374,800

The Lodge Poker Championship $3,000 Main Event has reached its end after an amazing four days that saw 617 players try their hand at making a deep run and only six coming together for the final day of streamed action.

Taking home the Main Event championship trophy and money was Alain Bauer, who won the grand prize of $374,800 and the LCS Main Event trophy after taking the final by the reins and cruising to an impressive victory.

Bauer is originally from France and he made his way to Scotland where he spent several years of his life. He now lives in Mexico and plays poker mainly for enjoyment. Prior to this victory, Bauer made the majority of his poker winnings from several years ago in European tournaments, but he found something special here in Round Rock during this series as started with a third place finish in Event #10 $5,000 High Roller.

“When I focus I can play high-level poker. But I do not play a lot; I was not well for a long time. As soon as I can stay focused there is no problem for me” Bauer explained about his recent hot form at the Lodge. “I think when you don’t play very often, you are happy when you do play and will play your best game”.

These great results almost didn’t happen as Bauer said, “I decided to come here last minute. I went to WPT Choctaw from Mexico and then heard about the Lodge and these tournaments and decided to go last minute. Throughout my life, I have followed my intuition, so I just thought I had to come here”

It turned out to be quite the good decision as Bauer takes home a cumulative amount of $426,000 for his efforts at the Lodge this series.

Road to Title

As far as the action of the tournament, Bauer said he was very fortunate to win a big flip early on in the final day against Nir Cohen when his ace-king overcame the queens of Cohen to build him up to the big stack and from there he played with more confidence pointing to his bluffs that made some headlines.

“I had some crazy good intuition all the way that when I was feeling that my opponents were weak, in those moments I went for the bluffs and I was almost never wrong,” he said about some of his play towards the end of the tournament.

When asked what is next for him, Bauer said he will for sure play the WSOP Main Event and will consider playing some of the short NLH tournaments as well if he feels up for it, but if not, he will not force it either as the joy in playing is a very big factor for him.

Thankful to His Friends

Bauer seems to be a man of many friends as he made sure to give shout-outs to several people in his life who he wanted to remember after the big win. He dedicated the win to Mona Potter, who he said was the inspiration for winning the tournament. He promised her he would win a Wynn tournament for her and then the High Roller in this series, but when he came up just short in each of those, his focus shifted to Main Event where he did indeed win this one for her.

He also thanked poker player Philipp Gruissem, who he said saved his life a few years ago in tough moments and that he would not be here today without his support.

Poker-wise he gave credit to players Dominik Nitsche, Daniel Rezaei and Adam Owen who he said have been coaching him recently and from whom he has been learning some strategy to add to his natural intuition.

And lastly, he wanted to give a shoutout to one of his closest poker friends Rob Yong and congratulate him on his 2-year-old child.

Action of the Final Day

The first elimination of the day came after about an hour and a half as Daniel Jones was not able to ladder up from his start of day short stack as he went out in sixth place to secure the second largest poker win of his career.

The next player to go was only a few minutes later was the aforementioned Cohen, who entered the day third in chips. He got it in during a big coin flip situation holding queens vs the ace-king of Bauer, who was able to spike a full house and crush Cohen’s queens to eliminate him in fifth for the first big score in his poker career.

Doug Polk, the story of the day going in, would bow out in fourth place. Polk was never able to spin his stack up much and mainly treaded at the final table before ultimately he was handcuffed with a short stack that had to jam in a non-ideal spot to be eliminated.

Three-handed play would take about two hours before Steven Rivero’s short stack ride would finally expire as he found pocket kings but ran up against a turned ace to bring the field to heads-up play.

Heads-up play started after the two remaining players agreed to a more even ICM chop of the remaining payouts. It began with Bauer holding a significant chip advantage over Eric Afriat who entered the day as chip leader and had tussled with Bauer several times before on Day 3 as well as earlier in the final day, including a much talked about hand where Afriat ended up folding aces to Bauer on a dry flop when Bauer had missed with ace-king. The heads-up battle would not really produce any memorable hands though as it was a short affair with Bauer eventually finding the winner with the better kicker on jack-high flop when both players hit top pair.

That wraps things up for the PokerNews coverage of the Lodge Championship Series. A recap of each tournament can be read in the archives for this event.

Afriat Folds Aces Face Up

Level 27 : 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante
Eric Afriat
Eric Afriat

Eric Afriat raised to 250,000 from the button and Alain Bauer three-bet from the big blind. Afriat then four-bet, which Bauer called.

The flop came a dry {9-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Afriat bet 1,000,000 after Bauer had checked. The latter then check-raised all in, which was a huge shove as the two big stacks were clashing while Steven Rivero, the short stack, was still alive. Afriat would have to put his whole stack in the middle to call.

He went into the tank and thought it out while Bauer put in some eye drops and drank green health juice. Eventually, Afriat folded the {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} face up.

Bauer then showed the {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds} for the bluff as he scooped the pot.

Doug Polk moved all in for about ten big blinds from the button. Steven Rivero called in the small blind.

Doug Polk: {j-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Steven Rivero: {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

Polk would need a lot of help but the flop did not bring it as it came {a-Spades}{8-Spades}{j-Clubs} Polk would need running nines or running spades to survive, the turn was the {4-Hearts} to end his run as the {4-Diamonds} came on the river.

Polk walked away in fourth place after his nice run.

Nir Cohen

From the cutoff, Alain Bauer raised to 180,000. Eric Afriat called on the button. Nir Cohen three-bet out of the big blind to 760,000.
Bauer four-bet to 2,000,000, Afriat folded and Cohen took a few moments before five-bet jamming all in for about 5,000,000 and Bauer snap-called.

Nir Cohen: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Alain Bauer: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

It was the largest pot of the tournament with a huge flip about to go down. The flop came {4-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{k-Hearts} to send Bauer ahead. The turn was the {a-Diamonds} and the river came the {k-Diamonds} for overkill to give Bauer a boat and send Cohen away and Bauer into the large chip lead.

Daniel Jones moved all in again the next hand from under the gun for his recently doubled stack. It folded to Steven Rivero in the small blind who called, as Alain Bauer in the big blind was away from the table meaning Rivero was actually closing the action.

Daniel Jones: {q-Spades}{6-Spades}
Steven Rivero: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Rivero had another chance to send Jones to the rail. The flop came {q-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, the turn was the {10-Spades} and the river the {9-Spades} to give Rivero the straight and eliminate Jones as the first victim of the day and deny him the chance to ladder up.

Doug Polk Features in Lodge Poker Championship Main Event Final Six

Doug Polk
Doug Polk

It is time for the final day of the Lodge Poker Championships, which will be concluded with the much-anticipated final six of Event #13: $5,000 Main Event. The final six players will return to play at 2 p.m. local time, with the live stream starting 30 minutes after that on the Lodge youtube channel, PokerNews updates will follow the action of the live stream. They will all be shooting for the $417,800 grand prize.

The final six is a dandy, headlined by none other than Lodge Poker Club part-owner Doug Polk who enters fifth in chips with 2,105,000 good for 35 big blinds. Polk took on this new project in Round Rock around January and has turned the Lodge into one of the more popular places for cards in the state of Texas and is now attracting nationwide poker aficionados. This main event cash is actually Polk’s first tournament cash since 2017 as he has started to jump back into poker playing more since he joined the Lodge and he has not been shy about sharing his results as he has indicated that this final six finish has made him “unstuck” playing at the Lodge. He will be looking to unstick himself even more with a higher finish.

5Eric AfriatMiami Beach, FL9,355,000156
6Doug PolkLas Vegas, NV2,105,00035
9Nir CohenBrooklyn, NY6,225,000104

Outside of Polk there are five others who are aiming for a huge score of their own. Leading the pack in chips is Eric Afriat with 9,355,000, which is 156 big blinds. The Canadian player will cross the 4 million in career earnings threshold with this result. A win would make for his fourth-largest career score, the largest being for over 1 million in 2014 with a WPT main event title in Florida. Afriat has shown impeccable timing and hand control throughout this tournament. It was on display yesterday as he won several decent size pots with well-played hands and knowing where his opponent was at. He is a serious factor to win the title here today.

Second in chips to start is Alain Bauer with 7,880,000. The Scottish-Frenchman has made quite the splash here in Round Rock throughout the series. He finished for third for $52,054 in Event #10: $5,000 High Roller just a few days ago in the early morning finish epic tournament. This series has been somewhat a revival for Bauer most of his results prior to this week come from several years ago in European tournaments. His interesting style and loquacious manner at the table has been a focus for attention for many players in this event as he comes into this final six as a bit of the wildcard factor and will be fun to watch today to see what he does.

Third in chips is Nir Cohen of Brooklyn with 6,225,000 chips. Cohen has just over $6,000 in career earnings as this young player is looking to make his first big splash on the poker scene. He has shown several moments in this tournament that indicate he is ready for this level of play and will be a player to watch moving forward after this first big score for him.

Steven Rivero is fourth in chips with 3,495,000. The native of Hialeah, FL has about $30,000 in career live earnings, almost all of it coming in the 2021 WSOP Main Event for $23,9000 for a 484th place finish.

And as the short stack with 1,740,000 to enter the day is Daniel Jones, the Texas native who now calls Las Vegas home. Jones has over $700,000 in career earnings, which is the most at the table outside of Polk and Afriat. If he is able to get himself off the foot of the chip counts and latter up even just one spot, he will guarantee himself his largest career tournament score, surpassing his previous largest of $97,000 from 2018 in for a runner-up performance in WSOPC Choctaw.

Play will start back up at at 32:38 left in Level 25 with blinds at 30,000/60,000 where they will play down to the winner.
As mentioned, PokerNews will be on hand reporting based off of the live stream so as to not provide any spoilers ahead of time.
