Jay Melancon Bags 266,400 to Take Overall Lead Into Day 2

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Jay Melancon
Jay Melancon

Players have bagged and tagged for the night here at Mid-States Poker Tour Canterbury Park Day 1b, and Jay Melancon sits atop the overall counts with 266,400 heading into tomorrow's Day 2. Distantly trailing Melancon were Scott Sitron (193,300), Brian Zekus (193,200), Ken Pates (185,000), and Judd Greenagel (182,200). Forty-seven players survived the 14-level grind.

A total of 232 runners bought in today, a slight increase over yesterday's 215 registrations, bringing the total to 447, good for a record total in Minnesota for a major event (buy in > $1,000). This record comes after the MSPT broke similar records in Iowa and Wisconsin in the last two events, respectively.

Melancon seemed to build most of his stack in pots we didn't catch, but we did find him in one good-sized pot. Tom Hammers shoved his last 20,000 or so all in on a {7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{10-Spades} against Melancon, who made the call.

Melancon: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Hammers: {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

Hammers had an overpair and a straight draw, but he trailed the set of Melancon. A {5-Clubs} bricked off the turn, and the {2-Clubs} did likewise on the river. Melancon had a wide chip lead with about 300,000 at that point, but the gap between he and the field closed over the final hour. Still, he bagged an amount well clear of the next cluster of players.

One of the biggest names to advance was Mike Schneider, longtime CardRunners instructor and Minnesota native. "Schneids" got very little going most of the day until a late rush fueled first by a big flip against Jim Lawrence. A short time after that, A player in middle position opened for 6,000, and Schneider bumped it to 15,200 on the button. The raiser called, and the dealer spread a flop of {4-Spades}{8-Clubs}{9-Spades}. Schneider bet 20,000 when checked to, and his opponent quickly called. A {j-Diamonds} fell on fourth street, and Schneider pushed all of his chips forward after his opponent checked. The player called instantly, but he was in worse shape than he likely thought.

Schneider: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Middle position: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

Schneider had two blockers to his opponent's straight draw, and a harmless {6-Spades} river secured his double. He finished out the night with 148,900.

Another notable, Mark Sandness, was consistently mixing it up with considerably weaker holdings. In one particular pot, Sandness opened for 3,400 in middle position and called a three-bet of about 7,500 from the cutoff. After a {9-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop, Sandness check-called 8,000. A {j-Spades} hit the turn, and Sandness checked again. The cutoff bet 14,000, and Sandness took his time before calling. Both players quickly checked the {2-Spades} river.

"I have a pair," Sandness said.

"Pair's good," his opponent said regretfully.

Sandness tabled {k-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for bottom pair, but it was indeed good against {q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}.

Sandness wrapped that hand up with about 100,000, and he hovered around that same amount for the rest of the night, ending with 98,800.

Other notables navigating through the field today included Adam Dahlin (116,100), MSPT Meskwaki final table participant Marty Martimo (87,500), Lance Harris (78,300), Taylor Tollefson (62,400), Nes Coburn (46,000), and Jason Seitz, (40,800).

Players we won't be seeing tomorrow: Todd Breyfogle, Matt Alexander, Peixin Liu, Terry Ring, Tyler Caspers, Dan Sun, David Gonia, Matt Kirby, Marc "Poker Joker" Powers, Jeremy Dresch, Brett Kuznia, Ken Payne, and Aaron Johnson.

Play will resume tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. local time, so be sure to come back to PokerNews bright and early for all of the live updates on the final day of this tournament.

Floor Forces Rooster to Reraise

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Rooster Oien was on the tough end of a floor ruling.
Rooster Oien was on the tough end of a floor ruling.

Rooster Oien opened for 4,800 on the button, and Chad Poitra made it 11,000 in the small blind. The big blind folded, and Oien called. Or so he thought. While calling, he dropped some extra chips in his hand to the side of his calling stack before sweeping them back up. The floor was called, and they ruled the extra dropped chips were enough for a raise, but since the exact amount was unknown, Oien would be forced to min-raise. Poitra shoved all in for 131,300, and a frustrated Oien, who had loudly disputed the ruling, went into the tank. After thinking for a couple of minutes, he folded.

Poitra showed {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}.

"Now you know why I fought for that extra money," he said.

Schneider Hits Another Double

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mike "Schneids" Schneider has rolled up a sizable stack.
Mike "Schneids" Schneider has rolled up a sizable stack.

A player in middle position opened for 6,000, and Mike Schneider bumped it to 15,200 on the button.

Schneider: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Middle position: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

Schneider had two blockers to his opponent's straight draw, and a harmless {6-Spades} river secured his double. The limit hold'em grinder known as "Schneids" is not a player his opponents want to see with chips. But that's exactly the case now for the man with nearly $1.5 million in live tournament cashes.

We found Tom Hammers getting his last 20,000 or so all in on a {7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{10-Spades} against big stack Jay Melancon, who made the call.

Melancon: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}

Lawrence Stacking Again

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Jim Lawrence
Jim Lawrence

Jim Lawrence opened for a raise under the gun and got three-bet to about 12,000 by a player in middle position. Lawrence made the call after action was back to him, and the flop came {a-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}. Lawrence checked and his opponent moved all in. Lawrence immediately dropped a stack of chips into the middle.

Lawrence: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Opponent: {8-}{8-}

Lawrence faded the two-outer when paint arrived on fourth and fifth. He rolled up one of the top stacks in the early going yesterday but ended up busting; we'll see if he has more staying power this time.

Schneider Gets Called With a Cinch

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Mike "Schneids" Schneider had his opponent drawing dead.
Mike "Schneids" Schneider had his opponent drawing dead.

We found Mike Schneider on the button and all in for 20,000 on a board of {9-Spades}{a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. His opponent was thinking, and he pushed out calling chips after about another minute of thought.

Schneider quickly flipped {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs} for a broadway straight, and his opponent helplessly and angrily tossed {a-Diamonds}{4-Spades} down for a dead pair. After the {9-Hearts} completed the board and the dealer swept the chips to "Schneids," his opponent commented that he put Schneider on kings.

Kressin Holds Great Spot

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Casey Kressin
Casey Kressin

We found three players getting all of their chips in the middle on a board of {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}. Aaron Johnson called off his stack right when we got to the table, and the players flipped their cards.

Johnson: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Casey Kressin: {8-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}
Third player: {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

"Nuts!" Kressin exclaimed as he slapped down his holding. Indeed, he had flopped the nut straight and had good reason to be excited since his two opponents had each others' outs. Sure enough, the {3-Spades} and {6-Clubs} were harmless blanks, and Kressin's straight busted two opponents, including Aaron Johnson. Johnson took down two tournaments at last year's Fall Poker Classic here at Canterbury, and he headed to the registration desk to take another crack at this expanding field.

Harris Starting Fast Again

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Lance Harris flopped a straight and stacked an opponent.
Lance Harris flopped a straight and stacked an opponent.

After Lance Harris doubled up on the first level yesterday, he's got more than double the starting stack again before the first break today. He bet the turn on a {j-Spades}{7-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{7-Spades} board, and his opponent raised it up to 3,600. A likely-blank {2-Hearts} hit the river, and Harris' opponent in the big blind announced all in. The stack looked to be around 10,000, and Harris thought briefly before tossing in a calling chip.

"Good call," the big blind said. "I missed everything."

He turned over {10-Spades}{4-Spades} for a missed combo draw, and Harris showed {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for a flopped straight.

Players are on a 10-minute break.

Ormson Checks the Nuts

Brett Kuznia and Larry Ormson both checked the turn with the board reading {q-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}, and a {5-Clubs} prompted a bet of 550 from Kuznia. Ormson double-checked his cards before tossing out a pair of yellow T1,000 chips. Kuznia quickly called, and Ormson tossed first the {8-Clubs}...then the {7-Clubs} face up into the middle.

"Nice hand, Larry," Kuznia said with a chuckle.

David Abramowicz set the bar for Day 1b players.

We're set to kick off the second heat of Mid-States Poker Tour Canterbury Park right here in Shakopee, Minn. David Abramowicz bagged the Day 1a chip lead with just south of 260,000. Cards will be in the air at 4 p.m. local time.

Notable names failing to bag stacks on Day 1a included Matt Kirby, Matt Alexander, Aaron Johnson, Lance Harris, Terry Ring, Jeremy Dresch, Patrick Steele, and MSPT Ho-Chunk champion Jason Sell. We expect to see all of those players take another crack at the prize pool here on Day 1b, especially considering how juicy that pool looks with a record Day 1a field of over 200 players entering yesterday.

We'll play 14 40-minute levels today, starting at 50/100, with each player wielding 20,000 in chips to start. Breaks will be given every three levels, and one reentry will be allowed for each player per starting day. The dealers are now taking their seats, and we'll be bringing so all of the live updates right here on PokerNews, so don't go anywhere.
