"Turtle Luck" Or "Turtle Power"
Gary Matthews easily wins the prize for best card protector in the room. When we praised his turtle protector, Matthews informed us that the turtle is a sign of good fortune in the Chinese culture.
According to animalquestions.org, the turtle is one of the four sacred animals in Chinese culture (the other three are the dragon, the phoenix, and the unicorn). The site elaborates, "The turtle is a creature of two elements; land and sea, as such these creatures reflect an ability to adapt and flourish in many different environments."
This certainly seems true in our experience. A few of our childhood friends are in fact turtles, and they've been able to assimilate to American culture and cuisine, despite residing in the grimy sewer systems throughout the country.
Whether it's "Turtle Luck" or "Turtle Power," Matthews seems to be adapting to his table well, and is now up to over 42,000 chips.
