Colpoys End Day 2 With Massive Lead

Level 21 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Dan Colpoys could barely fit his chips in front of him.
Dan Colpoys could barely fit his chips in front of him.

Dan Colpoys ran over the field like a freight train here on Day 2 of Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates Casino, ending the night with 3,907,000, more than double that of Kris Wagner's second place stack of 1,668,000.

We began the day with 121 runners, and it took just over 10 levels of play for the field to be pared down to the final 10. Along the way, we lost a slew of notables such as Brett Schwertley, Blake Bohn, Matt Kirby, Matt Alexander, Jeff Fielder, John Hayes, Mark Sandness, and Patrick Steele.

Colpoys had already build a solid stack when Olimpia May shoved all in before the flop and got called immediately by Colpoys in the small blind.

Colpoys: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
May: {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}

May's run was in trouble, but she almost pulled out a chop when the first four cards came {q-Spades}{j-Spades}{9-Spades}{4-Spades}, meaning she needed a spade on the river to survive or the {7-Hearts} to win the pot. She didn't get there, and Colpoys hit the 3 million mark when other players were struggling to make it to 1 million.

A short time later, he ousted Day 2 chip leader Gene Gioia when he checked to Gioia on a board of {10-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. Gioia fired 130,000, and Colpoys announced all in after getting a count. Gioia snap-called.

Gioia: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Colpoys: {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}

Gioia had flopped the nuts, but it's better to turn the nuts, as Colpoys had. Needing the board to pair, Gioia watched a {9-Hearts} fall, ending his tournament.

Among other notable storylines heading into Day 3 tomorrow, Kou Vang has secured a third straight MSPT final table berth, having just finished eighth at MSPT Majestic Star and second at MSPT Baton Rouge. He'll surely have a wide lead in player of the year race when numbers are tallied up.

Also of note, the berths of Givens and Paules to the final table mean two of the three Day 1 chip leaders made it, an impressive feat of consistency.

Be sure to come back to PokerNews for Day 3 tomorrow at noon local time, when we'll play down a champion who will have home over $114,000.

Dan Colpoys busted yet another opponent.

Olimpia May shoved all in before the flop and got called immediately by Dan Colpoys in the small blind.

Colpoys: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
May: {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}

The {9-Diamonds} fell though, and Colpoys' already-massive stack grew even larger.

Schwertley Exits

Level 19 : 7,000/14,000, 2,000 ante
Brett Schwertley busted in 20th.
Brett Schwertley busted in 20th.

Brett Schwertley opened for 30,000 in the cutoff, and Dan Colpoys put him all in. After thinking for awhile, Schwertley called it off.

Schwertley: {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Colpoys: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

Schwertley's hopes for a three-outer evaporated on the {k-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop, and Colpoys collected another stack after the {3-Spades} and {8-Clubs} completed the board.

Gioia Busts Steele

Level 17 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Patrick Steele busted in 23rd.
Patrick Steele busted in 23rd.

Gene Gioia three-bet to 75,000 from late position after Patrick Steele opened for 28,000. Steele jammed for about 200,000, and Gioia called.

Gioia: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Steele: {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

Gioia had the lead with queens, and nothing changed on the {8-Clubs}{9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} community.

At another table, Michael McCloud busted out.

Paules Vaults to Lead

Level 15 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Rosie Paules has a monster stack.
Rosie Paules has a monster stack.

Rosie Paules just dragged the biggest pot of the tournament when she got all in after a {j-}{5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} flop with {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts} against a player holding {j-}{j-} for top set. Paules turned additional outs when a {7-} hit the board, and an {8-Hearts} river meant she had filled both of her draws to bust her unfortunate opponent.

Chip Leaders Battle

Level 14 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
William Givens
William Givens

William Givens just took round one in what will surely be the first of many battles between two of the largest stacks in the room seated next to each other.

He opened for 15,000 when action folded to his small blind, and Kou Vang defended. On the {5-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop, Givens bet 14,000 and Vang called. A {9-Diamonds} hit the turn, and Givens continued his aggression with 32,000. Again, Vang called. When a {k-Clubs} fell, Givens fired 70,000 and Vang immediately announced a call.

Givens showed {k-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} for two pair, and he dragged the hefty pot.

Vang Eliminates York and Sandness in Three-Way All In

Level 13 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Kou Vang may be the chip leader now.
Kou Vang may be the chip leader now.

Mark Sandness open shoved from middle position for 79,000, and action folded to Kou Vang's small blind. He moved all in as well, and Colin York called off his stack out of the big blind.

York: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Sandness: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Vang: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The flop came {6-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{5-Clubs}, no help to anybody besides Vang since all three players whiffed. The {9-Diamonds} turn gave Vang a set and meant only York was drawing live with diamonds. A black card arrived though: the {8-Clubs}, and Vang sent both of his opponents to the rail.

Vang Hits a Big Double on Sandness

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Kou Vang is not a player others want to see with chips.
Kou Vang is not a player others want to see with chips.

On a {j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{7-Spades} flop, Kou Vang bet out 8,200 from under the gun only to see Mark Sandness make it 21,300 from the cutoff. Vang three-bet to 53,200. Sandness responded by pushing all in, and Vang quickly called.

Vang: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Sandness: {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

Vang's overpair was good, and a {9-Spades} kept him in front. Sandness couldn't suck out on the {8-Hearts} river either, and Vang's quest for three straight MSPT final tables got a big boost.

Schwertley Finishes Hayes Off

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
John "JohnnyGstaks" Hayes had to call it an early day.
John "JohnnyGstaks" Hayes had to call it an early day.

John Hayes pushed all in for about 20,000 and was called by Brett Schwertley in the cutoff. Everyone else folded.

Schwertley: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}
Hayes: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

The board ran out {5-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, not enough for Hayes to overtake Schwertley's AA.
