Berlowski Edges Former Champ Bronk for Day 1b Lead

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Benjamin Berlowski bagged the narrowest of leads.
Benjamin Berlowski bagged the narrowest of leads.

Benjamin Berlowski bagged 240,000 to end Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Ho-Chunk Gaming, enough to notch the chip lead by a nose over Drake Bronk, who finished with 239,500. Bronk won the biggest event in tour history when he topped a field of 854 to take home $163,870 at the MSPT Mid-Season Championship at the Venetian in June.

Today's field numbered an impressive 202 entrants, boosting the total to 359, and 37 of the day's runners made it through. Tour pro Matt Alexander (223,500), Ken Payne (213,000), last week's champion Ken Pates (192,500), MSPT Player of the Year leader Mike Deis (172,000), Matt Kirby (149,000), Jason Sell (134,000), Tony Lazar (79,000), and Jason Zarlenga (53,000) were among those punching Day 2 tickets. Sell won this event in March.

Berlowski's most crucial hand came late in the night, during Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300). After a {k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{j-Spades} flop, he got all in for his last 48,800 with monster stack Kevin Fiedler.

Berlowski: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}
Fiedler: {k-}{j-}

Fiedler looked poised to add to his already-hefty stack, but running {2-Spades}{2-Clubs} ended those hopes by giving Berlowski aces up.

Bronk seemed to steadily climb throughout the 14 levels of play, not owing his stack to any one pot.

Sell, meanwhile, spent almost the whole day far below average. His chances of a successful title defense looked rather bleak as he toted a stack of 10,700 as late as Level 12 (800/1,600/200). Then, he shoved over a 3,600 open from Lazar, who made a reluctant call. Lazar was unable to hit with {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} against Sell's {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} as the community ran out {3-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{8-Spades}{5-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. The double up started a late climb for Sell that culminated in bagging an above-average stack.

A number of notables failed to match Sell's survival skills. They included Steve Belland, Chad Holloway, Terry Ring, Mike "Schneids" Schneider, Tom Midena, Kou Vang, Larry Ormson, John Hayes, Mark Kroon, Jonathan Olson, and Patrick Steele.

Vang got coolered in brutal fashion early in the day when he bet 900 on a {3-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} flop from middle position, but Jason Meyer bumped it to 2,200 on the button. Vang made the call, and the two checked the {j-Spades} turn. A {5-Diamonds} completed the board, and Vang checked. Meyer bet 3,000, and Vang raised to what looked like about 11,800. Meyer shoved all in, and Vang snapped.

Meyer showed {j-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for jacks full. Vang disgustedly flicked {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} into the middle, showing a lower full house.

Vang reentered, but the second bullet went no better than the first, ending with a lost race to Peter Ruszkiewicz. The Minnesotan will likely have more work to do to catch Deis atop the player of the year counts, with Deis looking likely to add to his lead on Sunday.

Day 2 play commences at 10:30 a.m. local time, so be sure to come back and see a champion crowned.

Big Stacks Take Hits

Kevin Fiedler and Benjamin Berlowski got it all in after a {k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{j-Spades} flop with Berlowski at risk for 48,800.

Berlowski: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}
Fiedler: {k-}{j-}

Fiedler looked poised to add to his already-hefty stack, but running {2-Spades}{2-Clubs} ended those hopes by giving Berlowski aces up.

At another table, Ken Payne won a huge pot off Mike Mustafa in a hand we didn't see. After the hand, Mustafa was visibly irritated.

Ruszkiewicz Ousts Vang

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Kou Vang couldn't get much going on Day 1b.
Kou Vang couldn't get much going on Day 1b.

John Hayes opened for 2,500 in middle position, and Kou Vang shoved all in from the button for about 13,000. Peter Ruszkiewicz jammed as well for 19,400 in the blinds, and Hayes thought for a couple of minutes before mucking. Vang turned over, {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}, an eerily similar shoving spot to the hand a bit ago when Hayes shoved an almost-identical stack on the button over a Vang raise and doubled up with {a-}{q-}.

The sponsored pro wasn't so lucky, as Ruszkiewicz's {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} turned him dead on a board of {9-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Spades}{j-Clubs}.

Hayes Doubles Through Vang

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
John Hayes
John Hayes

Kou Vang opened for 2,000 and was called by Peter Ruskiewicz, and John Hayes shoved all in from the button for 12,600. Vang shoved over that after the blinds folded, forcing Ruskiewicz out.

Vang: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Hayes: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

Vang was dominated, and he found no help on the {k-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{7-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} board, doubling his fellow Minnesotan up and leaving Vang in the danger zone with less than 15 big blinds.

"You Bluffed Me Two Years Ago"

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

We found Sam De Silva tanking against an all-in wager of 19,350 from an opponent on a {9-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{j-Diamonds} flop. De Silva thought for a couple of minutes and tossed in a call.

De Silva: {q-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Opponent: {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}

De Silva was far in front, and the {9-Clubs} and {j-Hearts} run out cemented it for him.

"You know why I called you?" De Silva said. "You bluffed me two years ago."

His opponent protested that she thought she had flopped a set of twos and hadn't known she was bluffing.

Former Champs Sell, Bronk Firing

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Jason Sell won this event in March.
Jason Sell won this event in March.

Jason Sell and Drake Bronk are among the seven former Mid-States Poker Tour champions currently in the room. Sell took down this event in March for $97,539, topping a field of 383, and he's returned to defend his title after being absent on Day 1a. Bronk conquered the largest field in tour history when he beat out a field of 854 runners to claim a first-place prize of $163,870 at the MSPT Mid-Season Championship at the Venetian in early June.

Keep an eye on these two.

True to his nature, Mark "P0ker H0" Kroon just went from raking pots to the reentry desk, as he just sent his whole stack to Steve Anderson. The final board read {j-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}, and Anderson had {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} in front of him. We didn't see Kroon's hand, as it was already mucked.

Welcome to Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Ho-Chunk Gaming

MSPT Ho-Chunk Gaming
MSPT Ho-Chunk Gaming

After Don Coy led a field of 24 survivors on yesterday's Day 1a, we're set to kick off Day 1b here at Ho-Chunk Casino in Wisconsin Dells, Wisc. Coy bagged 282,500 to lead a pack that included notables Rob Wazwaz, Lance Harris, Nick Pupillo, Todd Breyfogle, and Nick Kost.

Day 1b will begin at 4 p.m. local time, and the tournament will be using the Allen Kessler-approved structure it adopted for the last main event here. Stacks will start at 20,000, with blinds beginning at 50/100 and going up every 40 minutes. A total of 14 levels will be played today, with each player being allotted one reentry through the first nine levels.

We still haven't seen defending champion Jason Sell, so we'll keep an eye out for him, as well as other regulars such as Matt Kirby, Kou Vang, Jason Zarlenga, Chad Holloway, Jim Boone, Mike Deis, and Josh Reichard who failed to bag up last night.
